Now that I'm done the first season of Rozen maiden, I've decided for my next short series (and I consider a season of a long series broken down as listed on MAL, as a short series) that I will widen my horizons.

I can't say that I ever expected a TAIWANESE PUPPET SHOW to catch my interest, but here we are. I saw Gigguk mention Thunderbolt Fantasy in a video last year but didn't look into it at the time. Then earlier today I stumbled on a video of the first scene of the series (see above) and I also found out that it's written by the same guy who wrote Madoka Magica, and now I'm interested. Has anyone here seen or heard of this show before?

Yeah all of his songs have the same structure. An extremely drab and terrible first minute or two, sudden burst of like 30 seconds of song, drab repeat of the first min or two til the song ends. He doesn't change his instruments and sometimes reuses the melodies. It's ok to do this in an anime where you're rarely paying attention to the song over the action or the dialogue but when you take the song itself out, you realize how much this guy phones it in

I watched the first two episodes of Angelic Layer this morning... good lord, what was the last anime I actually watched in standard definition? I think it may have been when I re-watched Cardcaptor Sakura in 2017 to prepare for Clear Card coming out in early 2018. It took some time to re-adjust my eyes (and my gif-making program) to the new dimensions. Wait, where was I? Oh right, talking about Angelic Layer.

Right off the bat, Misaki is super adorable. I loved how what drew her to Angelic Layer was seeing a smaller doll defeating a much bigger one. Since she's also pretty short for her age herself, she picked a smaller doll design to match with herself and try to follow that example.

hnCgvTH

Her energetic new friend Tamayo (who's actually voiced by Monica Rial in the dub, one of her earliest roles!) makes a great cheerleader.

g1KHqoE

And the scientist dude who introduced Misaki to Angelic Layer (and knowing these kinds of shows, he's probably also the inventor of Angelic Layer or some shit like that) is a hilarious wackjob and probably a closet pervert too.

vUPpSJP

Only two episodes in and Misaki's brand new doll Hikaru already got thrown into a lion's den unprepared. So how do they get the win? Misaki remembers what she saw Tamayo do earlier and has Hikaru do a freaking flying clothesline to get the KO win. I can't even.

89JYiaC
CicagNR

It was a pretty fun start. I like it.

Yeah his songs sound pretty much the same, i personally like them but i totally see why this would be a major complaint, like just the other day while randomly going through youtube autoplay, it played one of the seven deadly sins song, and then some other song he made this/last year and it sounded the same but the lyrics were different.

Also don't get me started on the fucking lyrics... fucking wir fliegen is just gibberish most of the song, a lot of his song's lyrics are random english nonsense.

starting watching yoku wakaru gendai mahou, aka modern-day magic for dummies. 3 episodes in and I have to say it's not very good so far and the ways it's not good in make me think it will probably never be good. but just the basic premise of the series, where the outdated old way of casting spells by reciting a big chant and etc etc has been replaced with, well... this: https://files.catbox.moe/xz2t8o.mp4

has me amused enough to keep watching for now at least. The idea of presenting programmers as the modern equivalent of magicians is just the perfect combination of sillyness and accuracy

@Calwings, question for you since you have steeped yourself in magical girl stuff.

Why was it that Sailor Moon was the one that broke out for North America? Is it considered the pinnacle of Magical Girl in Japan for the time?

I don't know enough about magical girl stuff to really know... but it just seems like... why Sailor Moon compared to dozens of other, arguably BETTER stuff?

It was the first big one to come to the states, and it was on Toonami where tons of people were able to watch it. That's it, that's all.

Because it was the one that revolutionized the genre. It came first, and it put the genre on the map. That's it, that's all.

I tried rewatching Sailor Moon again when I was older (both the original and Crystal) and I thought it aged horribly. There's honestly nothing that Sailor Moon did well that wasn't done better by Cardcaptor Sakura, Lyrical Nanoha, Pretty Cure, and many other successors. Sailor Moon succeeded because it was in the right place at the right time. That's it, that's all.

I wonder why something like Cutie Honey never got a chance

I can explain this one I think. Settle in, it's gonna be a wall of text and a tl;dr.

Pre-76, Toei worked pretty closely with Go Nagai/Dynamic Planning to make various anime adaptations of Dynamic manga, sometimes even running simultaneously (if you ever wonder why they're so tonally different, that's why). Devilman (anime) was for example, supposed to be an adaptation of Demon Lord Dante (manga) but as DLD was too violent things got shuffled around, Nagai came up with Devilman, the manga was drawn/anime aired. This happened a few more times with Mazinger Z, Cutie Honey, Enma-kun, Yasuda's Steel Jeeg and Ishikawa's Getter Robo (and of course the various sequels and flicks).

So 1976 rolls around. Toei animates Daikuu Maryuu Gaiking, another Super Robot show that feels a lot like a Dynamic robot in some aspects and a lot different from them in others. The two things of note to this discussion are:

A. There's no Gaiking manga
B. Toei didn't credit Go Nagai

Now I won't speak for either side being right or wrong, but Go felt cheated and the relationship got frosty between Dynamic and Toei. Toei made it worse by distributing some shows without notifying Dynamic, Go made it worse by suing for creator rights on Gaiking. This is also why different studios animated Dynamic works for awhile (IIRC Groizer and Govarian by Knack, God Mazinger by TMS, Devilman OVAs by Oh! etc etc) and why Go took firmer control of his properties into the 80s and 90s.

So the first point against Cutie Honey making it overseas would be the fracture between Toei and Go/Dynamic. The only country that got the OG anime besides Japan was France, where I believe CH did end up doing somewhat well.

Second point can be easily explained by looking back at '60s anime, including one you mentioned: Mach GoGoGo, Tetsujin-28 and Tetsuwan Atom were all wildly popular in Japan, and subsequently were Amercanized as Speed Racer, Gigantor and Astro Boy. The censorship and shoddy re-written scripts often drew the ire of the original creators; the story goes that Yokoyama pulled out of the West for thirty years after seeing what Fred Ladd did to Tetsujin, and I know that even Tezuka (who loved American stuff probably more than any other artist at the time) was livid about the changes made to Atom.

Seeing this happen to his predecessors in the 60s, and then to him with Mazinger being chopped into Tranzor in the 80s, was probably if not outright certainly a caution to Nagai from bringing over his other stuff; it wasn't really until the late 90s/early 00s, when Dynamic and Toei had repaired their relationship, that he allowed his works to start coming West. Still, Dynamic had a close eye on what was brought over and who was allowed to handle it; Nagai even picked the actress for Cutie in New/Shin CH's dub.

Point three? Cutie Honey may not be the most H of his works (Kekko Kamen, contemporary to CH, comes to mind) but it's still pretty free with Cutie's nudity. Considering that Tranzor edited out Aphrodite "giant metal, barely feminine" A's oppai missiles to protect the children, I can only imagine what a mess CH would have been. And by the time pearl-clutching, "think of the children" censorship had cooled off, it was the 90s and Cutie Honey did come over in all her glory...just in the form of New/Shin, which while enjoyable, wasn't wide-spread or genre-defining.

So tl;dr? Dynamic and Toei had a long falling out, Go watched out for his works, and CH was too sexual for pre-90's American audiences. And unlike your typical maho shojo, CH was targeted for the young fellas--and for that audience, a business executive's perspective is to get the Gigantor (Mazinger, Gaiking, etc) not the pink haired girl named Cutie Honey.

6 characters left, not too bad for a couple open tabs and a lot off the top of my head
I hope it's an informative read, but those are just the conclusions I've drawn, there might be more to it I don't know or whatever.

Regardless, I finished 18-20s of the remaining three today (Yamato, Dirty Pair, Betterman), advanced on 21-22 of Shiki and am heading towards the end of FMP.

Shiki review in brief:
First opening was great, didn't much like OP2
Natsuno wasn't favorable at first but I grew to like him
Gackt was good, the role suited him
Character designs and hair especially were very recognizable and fun to look at
Overall, good twists, good setting, good vampires anime. Would recommend, let's say oh, 8.5/10

FMP review in brief:
Tomokazu handles stoic Sagara as well as hot blooded Domon, always a good VA to whom to listen
Supporting cast, OK, Chidori is probably least favorite
Character designs are incredibly stand out, very comfortable and round
Lambda Driver is largely an agreeable gimmick, not as cool as some or as dumb as others
However, some arcs IMO take 1-2 episodes too many due to padding and abrupt stopping points
