I mean I watched 12 episodes of Yaiba this week and I could only name maybe 3 or 4 characters. Also watched most of O Maidens within the last 2 weeks and only remember the name of 1 character, so I'm with LtM on this one. (I think Dedue is LtM?)

Also without having seen it, I find it very hard to believe that the shitty Fate spinoff anime is anything other than a shitty Fate spinoff.

Names are hard for me.

There are multiple shows in my top 20 where I can rember like a handful of character names at best.

If a series has traditional Japanese sounding names, you can usualy forget me rememberingall by the mainestbkxnthe main characters. I have to LIVE a show to remember all the names, like Steins;Gate, or Eureka Seven, and even then I'll forget a bunch of side characters.

This was the case for One Piece for a while, even with it's absurdley extensive cast, but ever since I stopped thinking it was very good around the timeskip, not only did I stop remembering any new character names, I started forgetting old ones.

But yeah...didnt expect to have El Melloi fans so vitriolic around here that they'd claim I must be lying about watching it because I said I thought it was confusing and didn't like it. I don't think anybody but me had even talked about that show since it started airing.

And yes I just watched 3 through last week's episode of O Maidens about a week ago. Absolutely love it. Could not tell you the name of a SINGLE CHARACTER right now.

Shit, I forgot to watch the last one today...

At least speaking for myself, it's a lot more common in anime for me to remember characters by the looks or their traits than by their names. I'm guessing it's a product of watching anime in a language I don't actually understand, but I don't know.

To be fair, I usually remember at least the names of the lead characters, and maybe more if it's a show that either has very distinctive characters and/or is a show I really like. I wouldn't say that's the norm though.

Welp. Started my Chihayafuru re-watch now on the basis that I'd probably watch 1-2 episodes per day and finish around when season 3 started, but turns out I watched like 15-20 episodes yesterday oops.

I cannot even imagine Chihayafuru in manga form.

I mean I'd probably still like it a lot because the character writing and such is very solid, but I have to feel like something would be missing from the karuta matches when you don't get to see it in full motion. Also the soundtrack is definitely a significant contributing factor in my enjoyment of the series.

See I find it nicer seeing the poems in Japanese so they actually do match syllables and starting words/letters (translated manga doesnt translate the poems.)

Plus hearing the readers is just slow and kind of annoying to me but I'm likely in the minority there. It just feels so slow compared to reading it.

Yeah I can imagine the pacing being much different in the manga but I actually don't mind the pace of the anime. For me at least the pauses for the reading and such add a lot to the tension of the match.

The poem translation thing I did not know and I'm not sure how I feel about it. On the one hand I like knowing what the poems mean, but on the other hand any discussion of syllables in the anime is just a mess.

Yeah the poem thing is the big one. Like peoples name cards make no sense in the anime. Like this card is your special card chihaya but it has no discernible connection to you. As opposed to it literally being her name.

Also makes those times where Oe explains the poems more meaningful since it's the one time we hear the meaning. But of course for competition meaning doesnt matter much.

O Maidens beated.

I don't think this will be my AotY, but it's at least in the discussion. Really wish that there was a more satisfactory end to one of subplots, rather than it just fading out with a quick resolve, but other than that it was truly excellent. Just holds it back for me a liiiiiittle bit.

Anyone else check out Promare? Had some pretty amazing action and spectacle, even for Trigger stuff. The characters were weaker than most of their shows though.

I actually read a decent amount of chihayafuru. I liked the character writing but the karuta sport was so weird to me I couldn't get behind it enough to catch up.

Not a fan of how many liberties they seem to be taking here, the chapter 1 ending scene seems especially neutered. Even if to you assume the scene is cut diem here for the PV, the location and build is all wrong. Real worried about the pacing here, too, if this is all episode 1...

I'm like 90% sure that it skips around for being a preview, and that's not the full first 10 minutes. Because yea at first I was like "wait what" but it really seems like it's intentionally skipping around.

Also I like the change in location/scene for Els and Legosi with the letter, the manga kind of makes him seem overly creepy at that part when he's not. This anime direction kind of tones that down a bit and makes it more believable.

I'm a little torn on the whole fire reaction he gets but it's kind of fun so whatever for now.

I really liked the framing for that scene in the manga, though. This seems...I mean, I get what you mean, but it seems far less impactful.

Don't know if you watched the anime, but at least for me the anime did a very good job selling me on the sport. There's some really good directing work put into the show in my opinion.

I don't know exactly how to describe it since I'm not very knowledgeable about this particular aspect of anime, but it's animated in a way that makes the sport feel...explosive, I guess? And at least from my perspective all the right motions carry impact in such a way that it makes watching it very exciting. Also it uses things like atmospheric silence and body language and subtle voice acting (ie. things like having the characters breathe a certain way) to effectively convey tension.

There's just a huge gap there (Kakegurui S2 is 8/10 I'd say, Wasteful Days is a 5). I only attempted to watch fun/cute anime so far this year for the most part and they were either really good or not quite bad enough to drop.

As for Wasteful Days, it wasn't terrible. I liked everyone except Baka.

Sword Art Online Alicization S2 - I take back the amazing start comment. Yikes.

7 Deadly Sins S3 - I still havent watched S2 yet for whatever reason.

Soma S4 - If this animates the rest of the series Ill probably start watching it all when it ends.

PSYCHO-PASS S3 - lmao is this series still a thing? Man it feels so 10 years ago even though its probably not that old. Cant imagine wanting more of this dumpster fire.

Assassins Pride - MC is instructed to assassinate the main girl. 0% chance he actually kills her because then he cant fall for her and have the series go into cheesy cliche territory.

Chihayafuru S3 - Its been so long and I dont really feel like rewatching the previous seasons so hopefully the premiere helps lazy people like myself. Very excited this is coming back!

Fate/Grand Order: Babylonia - I never got to this part in the mobile game, but hey it might be good. Looks like theyre using the male MC though? Lame, but oh well.

We Never Learn S2 - sequel to that show I need to go back and finish still. Man I remember when I used to actually watch anime regularly.

The Hero is Overpowered but Overly Cautious - Might be funny or might be another garden variety boring LN anime.

Are You Really the Only One Who Likes Me? - This sounds like shit to me, but I expect the rest of you to like it because the two leads treat each other like shit, but probably still hook up. Basically its about dude who keeps having hot girls confess to him...that they like his friend and the only one who likes him is verbally abusive to him. I bet the writer is basing this on his own life experience.

Babylon - What are the odds wed get two series with Babylon in the title. This one sounds like a suspenseful political show so it probably wont be my kinda thing compared to Fate.

High School Prodigies Have It Easy Even In Another World - Aka Choujin Koukousei-tachi wa Isekai demo Yoyuu de Ikinuku you desu!. Goddamn what a ridiculously long title. Its about 7 high school kids who get sent to another world and use the elite Mary Sue abilities to make that world more amazing.

High Score Girl 2 - HOT sequel to the show nobody watched.

There are still 25 series to go hot damn

Each arc has its own villain. She's a bit of an OP protagonist though. None of them really stand a chance against her.
