It's Friday, which means BattleBots is back on the air for another night of metal-munching mayhem! Here's our fight card for tonight:



Our main event tonight pits the unlikely 3-0 bot Death Roll against the team that knocked out the mighty Tombstone in their last fight, Rotator! Also on the card, Tombstone looks to rebound from its first defeat of the season in an undercard matchup against the sturdy newcomer Gruff, and two powerful vertical spinners collide as the former UK champion team of Cobalt faces off against End Game. With a plethora of 2-1 bots looking for that signature win to move to 3-1 and impress the selection committee, which bots will keep their momentum going, and which will have their playoff hopes crushed into a battered chunk of metal on the arena floor? Blacksmith is one of the most durable bots in the competition, and its flaw of not being able to do significant damage doesn't matter when Shrederator will do enough damage to knock itself out. If this fight ends with anything but Shrederator dying anticlimactically, I'll be shocked.

The other fights will likely be closer and more interesting fights. My bold prediction for the night: Ribbot will upset Sawblaze.

Blacksmith is one of the most durable bots in the competition, and its flaw of not being able to do significant damage doesn't matter when Shrederator will do enough damage to knock itself out. If this fight ends with anything but Shrederator dying anticlimactically, I'll be shocked.

This is what I'm thinking as well, Shrederator will likely deal all the damage to itself that Blacksmith fails to deliver.

My bold prediction for the night: Ribbot will upset Sawblaze.

I could see it, they surprised me in (what I think was) their last fight.

End Game has a good chance against Cobalt as well, but I think that saw will win the fight.

You're right, but they both suck and it's funny they're fighting each other. I just hope Shederator manages to drive into Blacksmith instead of a wall so at least we get something.

on the subject, i wonder what Blacksmith might be capable of doing if it took some weight allowance away from all that armor and stuff that makes it so durable and put it in the weapon. i would love to see a hammerbot whose weapon is actually weighty enough to do some real damage. Skorpios is pretty fun to watch with that overhead saw arm. that's about as close as i think i've seen to an overhead hammer weapon that has actually done some real damage. i wonder if it's even possible to do without having a spinner.

Yes, he's talking about Beta. John Reid and Team Hurtz (Killerhurtz in the original BattleBots, Beta in the rebooted BattleBots, and Terrorhurtz in Robot Wars) are basically the only team that's had a significant amount of success with overhead hammer/axe bots in the history of the sport.

Modular weapons?

That means it can equip different weapons based on the opponent and situation. IIRC it has a vertical disc (which it used to beat End Game earlier this season), a horizontal undercutter disc, a defensive wedge, and lifting forks as options.

Even if Gruff doesn't get this judge's decision, the fact that they survived three minutes against Tombstone is a feat in itself.

Gruff is a badass bot, simple too, its like if Free shipping, Whiplash and Duck had a baby. But....Tombstone??? He had his behind handed in the fight

The delicious irony about a chunk of Cobalt getting embedded in the bulletproof lexan from that hit: the team's other robot, Carbide, once did the same thing to someone else over in UK Robot Wars.

That being said, if any 2-2 bot makes the postseason tournament without the need for any sort of last chance rumble, it's Cobalt. Two dominant wins, and one of their losses was that fluke of getting stuck on the floor against Duck.

RotatoR became gator bait, by the time it lost their weapon (WHY DIDNT THEY USE THE PANCAKE OF DOOM?) it was already over

Credit to Rotator for having the toughness to stay mobile for three minutes after losing their weapon, but Death Roll is an absolute monster. The first 4-0 bot this season is definitely not anyone I expected it to be.

I wish the 2nd half of its weapon stayed on longer, because I thought it was pretty cool how only half it got cut off.

During the post-fight interview, the team captain of Death Roll made an observation that I found really interesting. He said that Rotator's horizontal spinner was exactly level with Death Roll's weapon motors once it got flipped over. So had the winds of fortune blown another way, Rotator could have possibly knocked out Death Roll's chain or just flat-out busted the weapon motor, and it could have turned into a very different fight.

Yep, judges gave it to Tombstone. No argument from me on that decision.

Yeah, the judge's score margin of 1 point to Tombstone was how I scored the match as well. Aggression split about even, Control to Gruff, but Damage with that 3rd point to Tombstone.

By the end of the night though, Death Roll with its ridiculous weapon has to have a solid spot in the top 16. The potential for some insane carnage is too much to pass.
