Generally, yes, but I guess it depends on how much they're paying me. A million bucks a day and I wouldn't even notice the drive.

Somewhat. I'd only think that's acceptable if I were walking. Outside of that I wouldn't travel more than I hour.

If it's 80 minute total that's actually not bad.

I live in Los Angeles and just to go about 18 miles to and from work takes me about an hour each way. Damn waste of time I tell ya...

An 8 hour work day is pretty much 10-11 hours gone from your day.

I did two hours each way once in the Bay Area, if they had ever gotten freaking bart to go from SF to SJ like they freaking were supposed to 20 freaking years ago, I wouldn't have had to...and it sucked. I pretty much swore to never to long commutes again after that.

80 minutes round trip is on the edge of what I'd consider acceptable but not intolerable for a decent gig. 80 minutes one way is pretty bad and entirely too common. Either of these are long enough that I'd consider public transit, because at least then I could poot around on my phone and generally do things I'd normally do in my downtime at home.

Also I've recently gotten exposed to the joys of being able to bill for time on the road. That is pretty fucking sweet.

Hour Twenty?

Not bad, I did it when I was younger

45 minutes on the train, anywhere between 10-15 minutes wait on a tram, another 10-15 minute trip on that then a 5 minute walk to work

On the way home was longer, after peak hour the train schedule changes to one train per half hour, followed by a 15 minute walk to my second job

That doesnt sound bad then. I guess i am just conditioned to thinking of a commute as driving and i think driving for that long is kind of tiring especially with traffic jams.

80 minutes with public transportation (on a train/bart/bus etc) isn't too bad. I did similar things before I started driving (more like 40 mins each way but 80 wouldn't be TOO much worse since you can read etc).

Only do such things if it's really paying you alot though, or you absolutely love the job, and then I'd still consider just moving nearby. Heck even just doing an AB&B nearby 4 nights a week (if you own a home or something so moving doesn't make much sense) would be better. You can get them for about 30$ a night, so $120 a week, commuting that far is going to cost a decent portion of that anyway (meanwhile saving you tons of time).

Another option is to buy a cheap commute car....which you park at a bart/bus/train station and only drive it from there to work and back again. Get one for $1k-2k or so, just needs to drive realiably, and then use that to cut down on your commute.

In the bay area for instance they are finally expanding bart to Millipedas, which is pretty close to San Jose, so instead of driving 2 hours through traffic like I did when young, you could hop on bart, take it to Millipedas, get out, hop in a car and drive about 20 minutes to work. At the end of the day you drive 20 minutes back, hop on bart and return (possibly to your normal car waiting at bart lol).

But yeah, i'd avoid 160 minutes of commuting each day if at all possible.

80 mins one way is a little rough. Both is normal I guess, most people I know commute at least 20 mins each way. I am lucky enough now to only live about 10 mins away.

Yeah, when a trip goes according to plan it's fine, but if theres a delay with traffic the commute will be annoyingly longer

I used to commute about 80 minutes to college, but I only did it once a week (once there and once back), and I had an apartment on campus. I wouldn't have done it if it was a daily thing.

For work commute, a lot of it depends on the ease of commute (riding a train in is a lot easier than driving yourself in bumper-to-bumper traffic and generally preferable to riding a crowded bus), as well as how much you're making (a seven-figure salary is going to forgive a lot more hassle than a five-figure one will). But in general I tend to be of the mindset that, if you're going to have a commute longer than a half-hour or so, you should probably move closer to your work, or get a secondary place to crash close by.

How much you're willing to tolerate is also going to depend on where you live. I can reach almost any store or business I might ever need to visit in 10 minutes or less, so I'm much less tolerant of longer commutes. But someone who has to drive 45 minutes just to get to their grocery store and an hour to get to the local cinema is likely going to be more willing to drive longer distances for things than I am.

It is long to me, but some people do it, mostly due to financial reasons. I once did something like that for summer school in college. The commute was usually 45-60 minutes, but when there was traffic, it was over 2 hours.

Yeah, that is pretty long. Mine can be bad too depending on when I leave in the morning. Leave early and I get to work in roughly 20-25 minutes driving. Decide to sleep 10-20 minutes and get out the door a little later, my commute gets up to an hour.

Not much in-between lol.
