Pokemon Moon is among the worst games I've ever played. The amount of handholding was excessive to exponential levels; they didn't even want me using brain cells in battles. The amount of pointless cutscenes slowed the game down considerably; at least give us some semblance of story. Add in things like the trainer customization being much less impressive than in XY, the bland and empty overworld, and the Trials not feeling different enough from Gyms and you've got a game that I couldn't enjoy in the slightest. In fact, I can't really think of anything I particularly liked about it, except for Kukui, and I got halfway through the third island.

I didn't even play Let's Go btw, because Moon killed my interest in the franchise. It can't be that much worse, can it?

I know this is bait (sadly, it took me until the 3rd panel to realize that), but 80% of the picture is talking about subjective art preference.

Now I'm expecting to see another picture like that talking about how people only like the 1994 version of Lion King because of nostalgia, and the 2019 version is better because of the art style.

The original adventure is so good and a huge part of my childhood

But Pokemon Black is the last truly great Pokemon game and Black 2 is by far the best "third version" if we're talking gens

I've never been good at picking a generation when it comes to the actual Pokemon. I like 5 but there's a lot of crap because there are so many 3-form families that probably didn't need to be. A very bloated generation. 4 is very very top-heavy to me. Some of my favourites, then a sudden drop to a bunch I don't really care about. 3 is kind of solid. Not a fan of 2. 6 and 7 too small. It might actually be 1, but I dunno.

And? I know that gen 1 is primitive compared to later ones, but it was the most fun for me. Trying to say what I liked then and that Pokemon hasn't been as enjoyable since is true, trying to imply that I'm somehow wrong for thinking that way makes you an asshole. Almost no one loves a thing, even a pokemon game, as much as the first version of that thing they fully experience.

I am not really in the Gen 5 Pokemon design hate train, and some of them are really really good and I like them, but it's clear that many people hate Gen 5 Pokemon
The Black and White games and the sequels are the best in the series, though

The irony too is a lot of those people are into Gen 5. And while theres nothing wrong with that, the irony is they are stuck in the past by their own definition. If old was bad before, then they should be Gen 7 or bust (soon to be 8).

The Pokmon fanbase works in cycles. Gen 5 used to be hated, now its beloved. The same thing has been gradually happening to Gen 6. The same thing happened to Gens 3 and 4. So on and so forth

we are trying to look at the games objectively and not be blinded by whether it's the newest or the oldest, but if it's the best game. i'm not trying to take anything away from you enjoying nostalgia but the back half of this post misses the point entirely.

There is nothing wrong with liking gen 1
There is nothing wrong with liking gen 1 over the others

There is plenty of wrong to hate everything besides Gen 1, even though the other Gens are making up 80% of Pokemon as a whole
People with "only the 151 original Pokemon matter" mindset are pure trash and should be ignored

You can weigh nostalgia relatively low and still put Gen 1 at top if you don't think the franchise has evolved much in ways you like. Like I find the gimmick battles added in B/W pretty dumb, and combined with less inspired designs for the Pokemon it's fine to like Gen 1 most even if nostalgia isn't a huge factor.

But I'm not a Gen 1 voter I voted Gen 4. I just think chalking every Gen 1 vote to "nostalgia" is maybe kinda dumbing it down.

What? I loved Gen 5 from day 1 and this hasn't changed

Hot (maybe) take here: which Pokemon game you prefer largely comes down to aesthetics, such as music or Pokemon designs. Unless you care about the competitive scene, the series hasn't evolved much at all since its inception. Outside of general quality-of-life changes there's mostly just been the addition of gimmicks no one really cares about like double battles or Mega forms. With that in mind, you could vote for virtually any generation and I wouldn't bat an eye.

You could say that some of the games have better stories than others, but I would argue that it's more that some Pokemon games have more story than the others. None of them are particularly good or the reason people play these games.

I don't hate Gen 6. I mean, the graphical overhaul was refreshing, but the characters were mostly awful. The games weren't difficult enough, either, but there were a couple of hard parts. It was standard Pokemon fare that felt like actual progression had been made, but ultimately it wasn't anything special. I like it, but don't love it.

Gen 5 became my favorite later on, but I was burnt out on the franchise at the time of its release. There is no way I will ever look back favorably on S&M, the only mainline Pokemon game I could not finish because of how bad it was.

It's funny you named the one gimmick I actually kinda like in double battles but I mostly agree with you, which is basically why I was defending Gen 1 as a non-nostalgia pick.

Now me I actually do care a bit about non aesthetics, though aesthetics are important. Gen 4 changed how Physical vs Special attacks worked which I thought was a good thing, and it was low on dumb gimmick battle bloat (aside from doubles which I actually like) which is why it's my favorite, mostly.

I'd be happy if they just included the BW2 locations in the remake as optional or post-game places to go, but I doubt even that will happen.
