Im really surprised how nice and welcoming everyone was. I even had someone explain to me, as the band was playing, the general etiquette of the mosh pit. I didnt even have to specifically ask.

That's cool. And yeah, that's pretty much the atmosphere at most metal gigs. It's why they're the genre I end up at most, people are so friendly & kind. When I went to see Leaves' Eyes 2 guys helped me get my wheelchair right up next to the barrier at the front, and during a Lacuna Coil gig a couple of years ago I changed my shirt in the midst of the crowd and nobody turned a hair or tried to grope me or anything. A little sad that that's so unusual it bears mentioning, but at non-metal gigs I would have *expected* to be groped while doing that, so I wouldn't have dared.

I dislocated my shoulder in my first mosh pit at my very first metal gig, when I was 19, and that was before that happened every day. I was having so much fun (that was also a Lacuna Coil gig) that I put it back against the pillar in the middle of the dance floor and carried on regardless. Did the same 3 more times that night, because I was loving the show so much I didn't want to have to go to the first aider and miss any of it. (I've seen them something like 9 times since then. xD)

My first concert of that type was Korn. I didn't join in any of the pits, but one of the pits made its way near where I was standing on its own. This one was pretty rowdy (security intervened numerous times to break up fights) so I really didn't want to get in that

One interesting thing I noticed was that if one of the moshers noticed that someone dropped something, they stopped everything they were doing and held it up so everyone could see.

Definitely left a... different... taste than the two HUGE dudes I saw brawl and wrestle right in the middle of the floor. But apparently that was all in good fun. Surprising.

None of them are very big, but I think SoulSwitch has been around for about 11 years. Thats what the MC said, at least.

No, I mean there was an actual MC dude from our local radio station that introduced each band and spoke before each of them played.

I stand to the side and watch any mosh pit before I get in it. If people are being stupid, practicing karate moves, or not picking up people that fall, I stay out of it. Any pit where someone made sure I knew the proper etiquette first is one I would feel good about jumping into.

The former's about usual for a good mosh pit, and a metal crowd. It's why I love it. And yeah, if there is any fighting it's generally in fun or over someone not respecting the mosh pit etiquette, which is to say no abuse or intentional knocking people over etc, in most places.

Edit: wow I can't type this morning...

Other than a few dumbasses, security was pretty much doing nothing all night at that Korn concert. Everyone left in an orderly fashion, looked pretty much fine too (people were just picking up random trash and tossing it away). Not going to lie: felt really awkward having the immense, 6'4 guy covered in tattoos that had been in the pit all night say "excuse me" to pick up garbage that was next to me.

Country concerts are so much different: security has to bring in extra cops to deal with the problems, people show up just to brawl, they trash everything, and it's just an all out shit show. Yet I know who the public think are the worst or more intimidating.

As a guy who goes to metal shows a lot, metal fans are the nicest, most laid back people. I've even talked to security about it and they've told me there are much fewer fights at metal shows. Even at big shows, there are often no fights.

Country and rap shows are lucky to have less than a dozen fights

Ive never really been to a metal show but plenty of punk ones and while im never in the pit i do enjoy throwing people back when they run into me.

But yeah any good pit is going to take care of people as far as i can see.

I've been to several rap shows. Nothing huge but i never saw too many problems.

Country concerts though...never been to one but each time the big names come in their fans are known for trashing the tailgating areas outside the stadiums. Piles of garbage everywhere. Plus drunk assholes on the level i never see quite as bad for other genres.
