I don't want to get all conspiratorial about it but how quick it happened keeps getting to me. "AB to the Pats" was always an all too plausible outcome, meme aside. But it always felt like a "deal worked out on like tuesday night after Week 1" kinda thing. To have this all go down inside a few hours? It's like they want me to break out the tinfoil!

oh well guess there's nothing to be done but shut down the pats franchise until we fully investigate this matter

FE3H Crimson Flower beated.

Chapter 18 Mission: Fun map. Again, the pinnacle of hype for me was Chapter 12, which genuinely may be my favorite FE chapter of all the games I've played. This was probably #2 in 3H though. Map Theme (Apex of the World) was great too. The map got pretty intense around the midpoint when the reinforcements came in. I basically had the group split up three-ways. Byleth/Edelgard/Lysithea/Petra took the center, Shamir/Felix/Hubert/Marianne had the right, and Ingrid and Caspar waged the most amazing guerilla warfare on the left third. Seriously, they are the lowkey MVPs for taking that whole third by themselves. Healing Focus is such a busted Combat Art. 50% heal for no cost or use limit. And Gradivus is just a busted weapon, puts Ingrid's relic to shame. But yeah, had to pulse out of some trouble a few times, mostly for that team on the right, particularly when the 3 Falcon Knights spawned on top of them just as I was engaging the golem there. After like 3-4 reversions I finally found a way to survive it through strategic use of Banshee's movement cripple. I liked the Shamir/Catherine convo a lot. Surprised Cyril didn't have any conversation with Shamir, he was supposedly her self-appointed apprentice! Guess it shows how far gone he was. I treated the Immaculate One with way more apprehension than it deserved. Knocked all it shields out except for one damaged one on Turn 1 of my assault, then broke it to begin Turn 2 to take full advantage of the stun. Won it on that turn, finishing in style with a Sublime Heaven Crit. Edelgard's Relic Personal Art is so busted. It's like Galeforce EX+ lmao.

oh hey our first cutscene since sothis fused with byleth back in chapter 10. from that cutscene i'm guessing that the implication (maybe you get confirmation on another route) that what Rhea did to Byleth when he was born was implant him with the Crest Stone that was normally on the Sword of the Creator which like... hijacked his heart, messed with his emotions, linked him to Sothis, and let him wield the Sword of the Creator despite it seeming like it had no Crest Stone... Byleth had it all along!

whoa wait i thought this war was progressing fast but did we just off-screen team thales? I feel like you could be forgiven for thinking the narrator was setting up an Act 3 where "the public war has been won but the secret one begins..." and your S-rank goes into effect and you get a few more maps but nope we just off-screened those dudes. Speaking of, I cut it because I was hitting the character limit in the last post, but I selected Edelgard when Byleth was thinking about S-Ranks. wtf happened to edelgard in that picture.

Uh yeah, so game beated.

Some more general thoughts... Good game, probably my favorite FE game even with just the one route so far, though FE9/FE10 could give it a run. The more freeform class system (level doesn't reset on class change, no set class lines, freely change between them, all weapons can be used) is excellent and I hope that stays. Weapon system was great too even if the repair mechanic isn't totally new, definitely prefer it over weapons breaking. Skill system is pretty good too, though I think it could be tweaked, especially for Byleth/MC - yeah you have Faculty Training/Advanced Drills but even that is woefully insufficient compared to Instruct so you lag way behind everyone else. Monastery stuff is pretty good but could definitely be improved upon in future entries. ...Most negatives I have are that the pace goes into hyperdrive in Act 2 and like... I wish it slowed down and was longer, and/or add an Act 3. Might have been a sacrifice made for having different routes but it's still the biggest sticking point with me in the aftermath I think. Otherwise I really enjoyed it!

As for what I do next, I... am not sure. I kept flipping in my head between "Do another 3H route (99.9% Golden Deer)" or "Dark Souls" (I picked up the collection way back since I loved Bloodborne but things keep taking priority, this would be Dark Souls I only for the record. I always had it in my head that I'd play one entry then do other stuff then come back for the next, etc.)"

And I mean I keep waffling. Yesterday I'd have said Dark Souls was clearly ahead. But now, maybe cuz I'm just coming off 3H, 3H might have the slight lead again. I'm worried though that I might get burned out somewhere along the way if I try it though.

Then there's always the chance I just go totally rogue and play something else entirely (or continue the Pillars of Eternity 2 playthrough I "paused" way back for Persona Q2 lol) on a spur of the moment decision.

Obviously I'm just kinda waiting for Cold Steel III because that will automatically take priority over everything but that's still a month and a half away so it's not impossible I could actually accomplish both but I feel like I'd actually end up at one-and-a-half and that's no good! It really probably comes down to whatever mood I'm in whenever I next have time to play something. >_>

Crimson Flower is the fastest pace of the routes for whatever reason. I don't think you'll have this issue with the other routes.

The flipside is that the latter parts of Act 2 for the other routes start to drag hardcore. You may end up appreciating the fast pace of Crimson Flower after going through Verdant Wind.

Seriously, FIVE free days before the final chapter of Verdant Wind? Who the hell thought that was a good idea?

Anyways, a lot of S Rank arts are pretty awful, especially for the girls. Quite a few are missing noses. The guys fare just a bit better.

Edelgard's is just hilariously bad. This video has an all-timer reaction (Obvious spoilers)

So I made the very bad mistake of reading some discussion around different places of the story. oh man these arguments will be the worst for years to come.

But it brings me to something I find really neat about 3H... but also will make discussion about it just the worst. So much lore and character motivations are off in supports and battle convos, to the point where the difference between seeing them and not (and they're optional and lots of people understandably won't see all of them!) can drastically change your perspective on events or characters. Personally I love trying to find, collect, and piece together the puzzle pieces but man if you don't have enough of them/the right ones I could see it really affecting how you feel about things.

For myself, I think if I didn't have the working knowledge from a lot of them I'd be coming down harder on the writing/storytelling. But as it stands, I feel like the information is there, it's just not delivered to you through mandatory channels. Again, it's like putting together a puzzle for me... except obtaining many important pieces is in optional content and could be easily missed. I know for a fact I missed some battle convos, for instance, so I know there's still more out there I didn't see even in Crimson Flower to say nothing of the possible permutations of who you did or didn't recruit.

I... don't know where I'm going with all this. I think I just felt a bit deflated, frustrated, and saddened by some of the stuff I was reading. =(

Well, like I said, my next 3H route will like 99.9% be Golden Deer. The question in the immediate term is "Do I want to go right into a second run right now or do I want to play something else first to avoid the prospect of feeling burnt out?" I definitely plan to play all the routes eventually because that's how I roll.

If it helps, Crimson Flower is the most unique of the four routes in Part 2, so there is enough different that going to Golden Deer right away would be a matter of slogging your way through Part 1 before you hit fresh content when it becomes Verdant Wind.

It's up to you, but for what it's worth, after playing CF and VW, I have no desire to plunge into a third playthrough anytime soon.

When we last left our heroes, they had taken refuge in the household of the leader of the Forest Foxes. Selphie asks why Seifer showed up, and Rinoa says she thinks he came to help the Forest Owls because she talked about it a lot with him. During this entire section, Zell just sulks in the corner, understandably beating himself up over his stupid mistake. Quistis explains that Seifer was furious when he found out that all they sent to help in Timber were three rookie SeeD members, so that's why he busted out.

Quistis wonders what will happen to Seifer, and Squall says he may already be dead. Rinoa says she feels sorry for him, which actually causes Squall to laugh because he knows Seifer would hate to hear someone say that about him. He actually understands Seifer pretty well...! Rinoa says she hopes he's still alive, and Squall inwardly tells her to think whatever she wants. Then we get our first real insight into Squall's personal philosophy that makes him who he is, when he thinks, "Reality isn't so kind. Everything doesn't work out the way you want it to. That's why..." and then he actually says the rest aloud to Rinoa, "As long as you don't get your hopes up, you can take anything...You feel less pain." That's what Squall's been telling himself since he was a little kid. As long as he stops hoping Ellone will eventually come back, it will hurt less when she ultimately doesn't. This isn't the way he wanted his life to be, but he has no control over it. He isn't the master of his fate. Rinoa maturely calls him a meany in all caps and a few exclamation marks, causing Squall to (rightfully) wonder what is up with her and then reluctantly (albeit likely insincerely) apologize.

At this point, we're told that the Galbadian soldiers are starting to give up their search, so this is the time to try to skip town. Quistis asks Squall what their next step is after leaving Timber and she cites Garden Code, Article 8, Line 7, which he's able to recall perfectly. Basically, if they can't return to Balamb Garden, they should go to the nearest other one, which is Galbadia Garden in this case.

When we go outside, we encounter a Galbadian soldier...only to discover it's Watts in disguise. He lets us know that there's one more train out of town headed to the place we want to go. Then we run into Zone, also in disguise, telling us that he conveniently got the last tickets for the last train. He also conveniently has enough for everyone but one, and he gives his ticket to Quistis and elects to stay behind with Watts.

Once they're on the train, Squall tries to give an encouraging word to everyone, but Selphie's cries for the door to be opened so she can go into the private part of the train will not be ignored. Squall understands that it's better just to let her have her way. Quistis says she has to express her gratitude to Zone for helping her get out of Timber, and Rinoa chimes in that he likes naughty magazines. Not sure why you decide to disclose that sort of information, but okay! I guess that's meant to be a hint that the Girl Next Door should be saved for the next time you see him.

When we get off the train and enter the forest, Selphie starts to wonder if Galbadia Garden would turn them over to the government, and Zell says that he's more worried about Balamb Garden because it's his fault if anything happens to it. Zell asks Squall if he thinks Deling will retaliate, and Squall gives a noncommittal "Maybe." Then Zell asks if SeeD would lose to the Galbadian army, and Squall states the obvious that it depends on how strong the army is.

Rinoa is none too impressed by Squall's leadership skills and asks if he enjoys acting so callously toward his teammates. She tells him that Zell is looking for support, but in his thoughts, Squall says that's only to ease your mind and he's sure Seifer feels the same way. It doesn't make any meaningful difference to their situation, so there's no point in trying to come up with something nice to say, or so he believes. Rinoa asks if he ever even thinks about the well being of his comrades, and Squall thinks that he doesn't believe in relying on others.

Unfortunately, their argument gets interrupted by another trip to the dream world. Fortunately for me, I remember which three characters get chosen for this part, so I have everyone properly junctioned! We rejoin Laguna and company at a Centra excavation site, although this is apparently not where they're supposed to be and so they don't have the right map. Naturally, he's completely unprepared and thus has to do everything by the seat of his pants, but it always somehow works out for him!

If you look closely, you'll notice that Laguna has a different running animation than last time, and Kiros and Ward eventually call him out on it because it does look weird. Afterwards, he goes back to his usual running animation. However, they get surrounded by Esthar soldiers and then have to start running for their lives. This is actually Lunatic Pandora, which comes up later in the game. The game doesn't do the best job of properly explaining what this thing is, but we'll talk about it later when it actually becomes relevant to the plot.

Anyway, this dream sequence is neat because what you do here as Laguna impacts two things: In the immediate future, it determines how many waves of enemies you have to beat at the end. If you can successfully activate all the traps, you only have to beat one wave. It also determines what items Squall and company can find when they explore Lunatic Pandora at the end of Disc 3. I wish they had done a lot more of this "The past affects the future" type of stuff with these because it's fun.

The ways Laguna keeps getting simultaneously lucky and unlucky during this segment are pretty hilarious, such as continuously losing old keys because he has a hole in his pocket ("I feel a draft...on my butt..." might be his most famous line in the game) or because he sneezes at the wrong time, while also doing dumb things that somehow foil their Esthar pursuers.

The last battle ends with the final dying Esthar soldier using an attack that reduces Kiros's and Ward's HPs down to 1 and actually severely injures them in real life, with Ward losing his voice for the rest of the game. Perhaps the funniest Laguna moment is him literally pushing Kiros and Ward off of a cliff and then talking about how they've got guts to jump off of a cliff this high, followed by him trying to gingerly climb down, only to slip and plummet into the water himself.

After they wake up, Rinoa apologizes to Squall for the things she said, and he tells her to forget about it and we make our way to Galbadia Garden.

Since her rank B is time gated to Chapter 12, you don't have the opportunity to bank support points throughout Part 1 like you do everyone else. I recall it taking a bit to get to A rank myself, so it's not just you.

Yeah, I don't know the actual mechanics/numbers behind it and it probably is simply as simple as the B rank being time gated preventing you from banking points for A rank but it absolutely felt like it took forever for me as well. Enough so that I think in Chapter 15 I just cracked and threw gifts at her to force the A rank since meals and the effort to gain support points in battle had yet to succeed. It only took 2 gifts at that point though, I believe, so I must have been close.

For collecting non-Byleth supports like Edelgard's, I think your best bet is to go battle on free-days and stick the person whose support you want as an adjutant and have them do a bunch of fighting.

I think you can gain support with other people's adjutants too (so like Byleth with Bernadetta as adjutant, Edelgard with Dorothea as adjutant, I think you can have Edelgard and Bernadetta gain support points but I'm not 100% sure. I do recall a rare few instances where I saw a new support available and I was like "...wat" and that was the only explanation I could come up with, though it's possible my mind got scrambled and I forgot something. If so, I assume it works the same as how you would have Edelgard and Byleth gain support in that scenario (have one attack an enemy the other also has in attack range. It's easiest when you have them equipped to their longest range weapon because it looks at their actual equip for this not their inventory)

Yeah Ive been assigning adjutants for support grinding, though I guess Ill have to make Edelgard drop her wyvern if I want to do it with her... (besides with Byleth who is also on a wyvern).

Oh is attack range the think that determines whether they gain support or not? Ive always been confused because sometimes it seems like I need the units to be adjacent and sometimes two spots away is fine (or even more); guess that might explain it. Im pretty sure adjutants can gain support with other people too (I think it just treats it like the unit and adjutant are stacked in the same tile).

Yeah.

I didn't 100% nail down the conditions but on the battle preview, you can see links to your attacker to any other characters who could also hypothetically attack that enemy with their current weapon. Its limited to 3+Adjutant but yeah (it's the same thing that determines Gambit Boost which is just a flashier depiction of it) not sure if the support aspect of it is limited to 3+Adjutant (and how it determines which 3 it is is not something I ironed out) but you can quickly tell by if you see the little hearts after combat (or if they don't pop but you know they should have then you're maxed out for the current level)

Adjacent units seem to gain support too even if they aren't in range or at least I noticed that occurring too, though I assume they don't contribute support bonuses to Mt/Hit/Evade.

Attack Range definitely works like that, though again, it might falter if you load up more than 3 people in there on a single attack.

I like the FMV that plays when you first show up at Galbadia Garden, with the accompanying music. Right away, it establishes that this place has a totally different vibe than Balamb Garden. They're both military and academic institutions, but Balamb's atmosphere emphasizes the academic aspect and Galbadia's emphasizes the military aspect. All the students here are rightfully concerned about what it means for them now that President Deling has allied himself with a sorceress, including a rumor that she wants to use Galbadia Garden as her base (a rumor that is not unfounded as we see later on!).

Also, several students shout "Whatever!" when we talk to them, so maybe Squall would have felt more at home here! In fact, when Selphie points out how completely different it is from Balamb and Zell says it's really quiet around here, Squall comments that he likes it (which evokes laughter from Rinoa. Despite how much they argued in Timber, she still finds him rather charming, and Squall still finds her fascinating, if not baffling at the same time). Quistis says she knows the headmaster here, so she'll go on ahead and explain the situation to him on our behalf.

We're told to wait in the reception room on the second floor. When Quistis comes in, she assures us that Balamb Garden is safe. The attack on the president was classified as an independent action, and the Galbadian government put out an official notice saying Balamb Garden is not being held responsible. That's the good news. The bad news is that Seifer has apparently already been sentenced and executed.

Nobody really takes the news very well. Rinoa feels responsible, thinking Seifer sacrificed himself for them, but Quistis says that they all must have been prepared for the worst, her as a resistance member and him as a student at Garden, although she recognizes that isn't much consolation. Zell admits that he hated Seifer, but he was still one of them. He even goes so far as to say he wants to get revenge. It is kind of amazing how quickly your feelings about someone can change when you hear they've died (or perhaps gotten a bad diagnosis or something similar).

Quistis says she has no good memories of Seifer (I mean, yeah. That's one of the side effects of GFs...!). She's seen some troubled children, but he was on a whole different level. Then she walks it back a little and says he wasn't really a bad guy. She also feels sad that he'll never be a SeeD now. Even for someone like Seifer who gave her constant headaches, Quistis is trying to find the good in him. "Don't speak ill of the dead" and all that.

Then we get to Rinoa, who says she really liked Seifer. He was always full of confidence and smart. He made her feel like she could take on the world. It's strange sometimes how different people can have a completely different view on the same person. Rinoa has nothing bad to say about him. She's one of those girls who likes bad boys, I guess...! Still, despite what we see from Seifer (which shows us few redeeming qualities, although he does give us a few hints of likable traits here and there), it just goes to show that there's more to him than what we see, which might be why they deliberately keep the nature Rinoa and Seifer's relationship as a mystery.

On that note, Selphie asks Rinoa if Seifer was her boyfriend, and she responds that she doesn't really know if she could call him that. She thinks she was in love but doesn't seem totally convinced of it, and she wonders how he felt about her. She starts reminiscing about meeting him last summer, but she doesn't elaborate on any of the details.

As everyone talks about Seifer, Squall just silently listens and tries to process what he's hearing. He realizes that Seifer's become nothing more than a memory, and memories can become distorted over time. Then he starts to question if people will do the same thing to him if he dies, too. He doesn't like the idea of people just saying whatever they want about him, and he recognizes that this is what death does to people, both the dead and the living. He hates the idea that, in death, people will make him out to be something he wasn't because they're just trying to be nice and console themselves. One of the great ironies of the game is that Squall, despite being the hero destined to defeat Ultimecia, despises the idea that he's not the master of his own fate. It's one of the few things that can make him legitimately angry and openly show it like he does here, when he shouts that he won't have anyone talk about him in the past tense and then storms out of the room. He does it again when Cid makes him the leader of SeeD without even giving him a say in it. Squall's goal is to become completely independent of everything and everyone around him, so anything that threatens it frustrates him immensely. In this case, it's the idea that he has no control over how others perceive him or how they'll remember him when he's gone. He talks about this later with Rinoa, but he deliberately behaved in a certain way to get people to perceive him the way he wanted them to look at him. Even then, it didn't work because he's clearly admired and respected by those around him.

On a completely unrelated note, I'm checking the Information tab to see what's updated, and it talks about the Centra civilization in there now (likely because we went there as Laguna in the latest dream sequence). Apparently, it was a thriving empire 4,000 years ago, and its descendants founded both Dollet and Esthar. It was completely destroyed by a Lunar Cry 80 years ago. It's no coincidence that Centra was where Lunatic Pandora was found because it can increase the likelihood of a Lunar Cry. That means that someone deliberately tried to engineer the destruction of Centra, but we're not given any more information about it than this.

Back to the game itself, as you roam around the Garden, you can find an Easter Egg of Zell somehow getting in trouble by one of the instructors and being forced to do pushups as punishment with a few other students. As we make our way back to the front gate, we run into Raijin and Fujin, and the camera angle allows us to get a good look at their new HD models, which is cool. Raijin informs us that they're here as messengers, and they brought a new order from Headmaster Cid, which they delivered to the headmaster here, although they don't know what the order is supposed to be. They were supposed to meet up with them in Timber, but since the trains weren't running, they also had to come to Galbadia Garden, so it was lucky they ran into each other.

Then Raijin and Fujin ask Squall where Seifer is, and he informs them of the news that he might be dead. However, they both immediately believe it's all a bunch of lies. Raijin says there's no way Seifer would put up with a trial and execution lying down. As a result, they resolve to go find Seifer, wherever he is now.

We're told to assemble at the front gate. Rinoa asks Squall to just pretend she's a SeeD, too, since that'll make things less complicated. It's actually kind of funny when she tries to do the SeeD salute with the rest of them, but she's a beat behind and keeps looking over at them to know what to do or when to stop saluting. The headmaster of Galbadia is a dude named Martine. He explains that he received orders from Cid, and he decided to cooperate with him because they've actually been planning something similar. He explains that the sorceress being appointed as a peace ambassador is just a cover up because there will be no "talks," only threats and coercion. Sorceresses are a symbol of fear, so it's impossible that one could be used to facilitate peace. Galbadia wants to use that fear to its advantage and move closer to its goal of world domination, and Garden is no exception to this.

Martine gives us the official orders, and as Squall looks them over, he says the orders require a sniper for the mission, but they have no one with that skill. Martine says they have an elite sharpshooter at Galbadia Garden who will accompany them on the mission, and we're introduced to our final party member, Irvine. He shows his gentle side by having a butterfly land on his finger, and then he does a cocky cowboy strut in front of us as he looks us up and down. For the record, I don't think Irvine is ordinarily a "choker" under pressure situations. I doubt Martine would have sent him along for this mission if he had that sort of reputation. The reason he wouldn't shoot is because he knew that Sorceress Edea was their old Matron, and he couldn't bring himself to shoot her. The game doesn't explicitly state that, but you can put two and two together.

Now there's something more obscure than that at play here that comes up on Disc 2 when you meet NORG. He tells you that Martine was supposed to be in charge of the assassination plot himself but dumped it on us when we conveniently showed up as the mission was supposed to be carried out. However, Raijin says that the order he brought was from Cid, not from NORG. Now it's possible that Cid was relaying the message on NORG's behalf, but it's also possible that he undermined him and wrote those new orders himself. Cid knows that Squall is the SeeD of destiny via Edea, and he keeps putting him in leadership situations (probably before he's really ready for him) to prepare him for that destiny. It's hard to say for sure because, again, the game doesn't clarify, but it's interesting to think about.

If you talk to Irvine first, he'll talk about saying stuff at times that gets a rise out of people, but if they can handle that, they should be fine. In his inner monologue, Squall (rightfully) recognizes that he shouldn't pair Irvine and Zell together then. Then Squall goes on to explain that this is a joint order from Balamb and Galbadia Garden to assassinate the sorceress, and Irvine is to be the sharpshooter.

They're to head to Deling City to meet up with General Caraway, who will go over the specific details of the plan. Irvine says that they'll need to split up into two parties, and he chooses the parties himself, putting himself together with Rinoa and Selphie. If you tell him to just go with it, Rinoa and Selphie for some reason take exception to his indifferent attitude and start flirting shamelessly with Irvine, resulting in Zell and Quistis wanting to prove they're the better party by beating them there and Quistis wraps her arm around Squall, to boot! The whole thing leaves Squall completely confused as to what he did wrong and admitting that he doesn't understand women at all. Or you can completely undermine Irvine's intentions by putting Quistis and Zell with him, which will displease him greatly.

Eh, I didn't feel much from that KH3 DLC trailer. The last (first?) one was way more hype IMO. The part with Sora v Xigbar in what looked like the Data Org Arena looked cool though. Also hey namine guess they remembered you for real this time

Yeah, the first trailer was better, but it's giving you just enough to give you an idea of what's going on without giving away too much.
