Unless Im mistaken Canada doesnt have the same history of racial tension that the US does. In the US blackface is seen as very offensive because it was actually used by malicious people to overtly mock and ridicule black members of the population.

This doesnt really seem all that comparable in my opinion. I just have a hard time imagining a middle eastern person actually being upset by this

Canada has the same history of minstrel shows featuring white people in blackface as the United States does.

In fact, the guy who wrote our national anthem occasionally performed in blackface.

Now, granted, the nation of Canada officially has no history of slavery because slavery was abolished in the UK before Canada became a country, but Canada definitely has its fair share of racial tension in its history. In fact, the first recorded race riot in North America occurred in Shelburne (and Birchtown), Nova Scotia.

The problem is that most Canadians are blissfully unaware of our sordid history of race relations, because it's not taught in the required history classes in schools.

I helped organize and run a gala that had an Indian (more specifically Bollywood) theme. Wasn't big on the theme but I can tell you from greeting guests that exactly zero people painted their skin brown to dress up. And that was a rural Alberta town

Racial tensions in the west specifically regarding First Nations are definitely what I'd call tense. Louis Riel and his execution are still very controversial topics around here.

Can't speak to the east since I haven't actually traveled there or really know people from over there. But let me tell you, out in the prairies, we got plenty of racists.

I've been banging this drum for years now and it never seems to catch on. I thought Trudeau was the best leader on the ballot - and I still do - but the single most disappointing thing he did was abandon the push for electoral reform.

Like, I don't get it. I just don't. We have a system where you can get less than 40% of the vote and still wind up with, essentially, 100% of the power and whether you're on the left or the right that *should* fucking outrage you. Yet for some reason it just... doesn't. Hell, last year BC had an electoral reform referendum - our third in 14 years - and people stuck with the current FPTP voting system. And not by a little bit either - over 60% of the electorate voted for FPTP. That's unreal.

Stephen Harper got his majority with less than 40% of the votes, which pissed off the left, and then Trudeau did the exact same thing, which pissed off the right. You'd think with that kind of a track record people would be hungry for change, but it just never goes anywhere. It's infuriating.

I always find it impressive when, even at its most political-doublespeaky, a political party's platform immediately makes it sound like a collection of reactionary lunatics.

Which, surprise surprise, is exactly what the PPC is. I do appreciate their presence, if only for the fact that they'll leach support from the CPC and increase the odds of us keeping a sensible government around. That being said, I will say that for however much I dislike the CPC, at least they have a collective brain in their heads, which is more than I can say for the creative thinkers behind the PPC.

I for one AM outraged by this. And it's worse than 40%. Now we have 5 parties on the national stage, that means anyone can slip by on 21% of the popular vote. Those margins narrow in places with strong regional parties like Quebec or Alberta. It's totally TOTALLY unacceptable. But I think that's what it's going to take: it's going to take a false majority of truly ridiculous proportions to wake people up.
