Disclaimer: I might lose interest and let the topic die eventually.

So I bought a used copy of FO4 from my ex and started it like last week.

My name is Raka and I play as the dad.

It's pretty neat that the Vault's twist is that we're part of a cryogenic experiment. A man displaced in time. However we seem to adapt just fine all things considered.

I put 10 on Int and more or less spread out the rest (with more on Perception and less on Endurance).

The city building game is pretty fun even though it goes nowhere so far. Sanctuary has 10 people now and the big generator. I made a big shack for myself but it's still pretty sparse.

I haven't actually visited Diamond City yet lol, got sidetracked right away. I'm at level...like, 14, I think. I like using a sniper rifle for sniping and a .10 gun I named Bavieca for short range.

Codsworth is best boy. I love his commentaries. Wanted to try going with the Minuteman guy but he's too focused on taking back the Castle (which sounds like a hard mission).

Most memorable moments so far include:
- Getting too far East and got wrecked by all the Super Mutants...

- When I tried the 'clear the Feral Ghouls from the Training Yard' mission...welp, I got wrecked so many times by the Glowing One and turrets...but luckily there was a glitch (?). So I ran outside the building and it was as if the Glowing chased me but I couldn't see its model (but its glowing effect + radiation is there).
I ran upstairs and Codsworth fought it off below. Cods died but thankfully the invisible Glowing One doesn't chase me so I just wait until he rebooted and finished the damn zombie.

- A Legendary Radscorpion showing up out of nowhere...I thought I was gonna die, but a DEATHCLAW appeared and they fought each other. I considered taking pot shots but I might die so I ran away.

- On the quest where I was to take back the Locket from the dead farmer daughter, a Legendary Glowing Musk Rat had appeared and slaughtered the Raiders on the outside. Fun.

Pending Quests:
- The Brotherhood of Steel one...I don't think I'll take that one since I don't really like heavy armors.
- I found this cult at a riverside amphitheatre but they seem nuts...they asked me for all my junks...no way. So I tried to run but that made them hostile. I ran away right towards a nest of Raiders and Turrets and I died. When I reloaded, I made sure not to follow that shady creep to his room.
- The mystery of who destroyed a traveling caravan. This mystery-ish quest at the Covenant is nice...but I'm kinda stuck. (I don't want to cheese it by reloading if I get caught pickpocketing). Since I got Lady Killer perk maybe I'll try conversing with the storekeeper and see if it gets me somewhere.

Anyway...any general tips?

You should at least do the early Brotherhood quest since the rewards are more about laser weapons than heavy armors at first.

I did the first one (where we fought off synths). But I don't know if progressing more would mean locking me to their faction.

No theres a big message that pops up and says doing this mission will lock you out of the other factions way later in the game for all factions so dont worry. It was mainly about doing the first one tho because of that early laser rifle with a great legendary effect. Great sniping weapon if you change it to be.

Settlements can be really useful if you start getting them up especially if you arent going to diamond city. There are way more convenient locations to settle than Sanctuary but you have to do Minutemen quests to get most of them.

Not really sure what tips to give you because theres no wrong play style, its a fun game but not an especially hard one with any approach. Ill be watching this with interest.

The Castle shouldnt really be that hard if you have a Fat Man or Missile Launcher by now.

Do you have the DLC?

Oh that's good to hear, thanks. I did get the laser rifle but I don't think it's the legendary one (it doesn't have that star mark on it).

Yeah, Sanctuary is waaay in the corner of the map lol. I did settle some more but they are smaller both in population and physical size. Maybe I'll wait until I get the more convenient ones to really focus my resources on.

Yep, got a Missile Launcher from a random gun brace trap. Good to hear, maybe I'll try that next time I play.

Really, you didnt get Righteous Authority from Dance? I think its guaranteed. Check over your stuff or talk to him again. Not strictly essential but its good gun for beginners all the way to the end.

Oh yeah than the castle is no problem.

All of the workshop dlcs focus on settlement building adding cool new things but only if youre really into building the perfect settlement for hours. The Vault Tech one may be the most interesting of those adding a little story with it and an okay settlement.

All the DLC is pretty good. I like the story based ones and I have to recommend Far Harbor as the best, it adds a new cool mid-challenging area and has a good story to it. I really enjoyed it. Some good new weapons and bits also.

Nuka World also has a fair story and a very challenging level 30+ area but also a new faction. The Minutemen can coexist with any other faction but this one and its the only way to turn those guys against you. I was gonna day earlier if you want to focus on settlements you need the Local Leader Perks but not if you join this new faction which functions similar to the Minutemen in that it lets you gather settlements that operate slightly different. Only bad thing is you cant compete the game with them but they can coexist with any faction but the Minutemen. Mostly for evil bastards.

Automaton adds a bit of story but the big draw is that it lets you build robots that act like companions or settlements and you make can put guns or flaming swords on them (even Codsworth). Very fun. It also adds a new very tough type of raider and tough robots to the main map however.

So in order, first Far Harbor (best story, best location), then Automaton (fair story, robot fun) and Nuka World (fair story, the opportunity to be evil thats not really in the base game, alternate way to get settlements, great location, new minor faction) tied for second.

Ooh wait, I did get that one, but I haven't used it much. I should try it out then.

Noted about the DLC. If they come discounted as a pack maybe I'll check them out. Then again, FO games are so rich in content that I still haven't finished all DLC quests in NV.

I'd say it's worth it at your point in the game to crack on with the main plot and get to Diamond City. There you'll get a few more companion options if you want, one immediate in Piper, and if you continue with the main plot in town you'll get the quest to meet my favorite companion. You can keep on with the main plot till that companion wants to "investigate the house" in Diamond City because once you do that it'll start events that lead to the closing of Act 1, for whatever that's worth.

Hey, neat. A game I never finished.

I can't really give you good advice because eventually my weapons were outclassed, I couldn't get better ones, and I kept dying a lot to this one faction that started showing up (won't spoil if you haven't met them). I guess I'd say not to get attached to your weapons until later.

Okay, got to play some more.

So I went to the Diamond City and met this reporter chick Piper. She seems...spunky.

After helping her get in and reading her report on Synths (it's pretty funny that I get to play dumb of not knowing what Synths are despite having routed an Institute facility with the BOS), I watched the Mayor declaring that Piper is a rabble-rouser and a liar. Shut up, robot.

Diamond City is pretty big. It reminds me of Midgard's slums kinda.
Aaaand I got tons of new quests. Wowee.

First thing first, let's advance the story a bit more. I found the neon heart (which that Mama in Sanctuary saw through her drug-addled sight).

I did the quest to find Nick. I also tried bringing Piper along since I want to grind her for the companion skill...but I miss Codsworth's commentary already.

Man, this mafioso-looking gang is pretty dapper.

...too bad I couldn't get Darla to flee the scene. She ded.

Nick is a synth! Didn't expect that. He seems cool and I've read that he can pick locks. Awesome.
...Does Piper actually has a niche as a companion? She seems very basic so far.

But time to get distracted a bit. I did find the laser gun and I've upgraded it (the upgrade/crafting system is quite nice) so it has a scope and quite deadly.

I also got green paint and baseball memorabilia (the misconception on it being a death game is hilarious). And fought off ghouls and stuff.

There was also a quest to make the Diamond City Radio announcer but...I kinda like his awkward personality?

On the Perks end, I took the first level of the 'better barter rates' thing and Science level 2, among others. Any recommendation?

My playstyle is currently
> Advanced-level hacking and lockpicking for loot and sneaking around
> Trying to get stealth headshots for bonus damage with sniper rifle/laser rifle
> If the enemies come close, fight them off with shotgun/handgun (or just use the sniping weapon if it'll die in a shot or two anyway)

Nice! I'm glad this had an update I had to come check. It's lovely to see Fallout 4 through a fresh pair of eyes. It's definitely not the best Fallout game (New Vegas) but it's still a really good Fallout game!

I actually like Piper and I've romanced her a couple dozen times, she has an okay story so she's on the better scale of being an interesting companion. There are way more boring companions. Strong, I'm looking at you. I'm not sure if she does anything useful but she might make speech checks easier? I'm not really sure. But I usually take Lockpicking and Hacking myself anyway making the companions having it not really useful.

Nick Valentine the synth detective! So glad you picked up my favorite companion. How could you not love Nick Valentine? Best companion story by far. If you ever run across Curie she's also an amazing companion. Codsworth is okay but you pretty much know his story from the get go.

Diamond City is really fun area especially since there aren't many in the way of actual cities in Fallout 4 unfortunately. Check out Goodneighbor if you're ever in the area. That's where the dapper gang is based also.

Yes it's almost universally agreed that the radio guy is way better before the quest so most people don't even end up finishing it for that reason. He gets.. well he's no Three Dog. I usually only do the quest on 100% good runs because I feel like I can't get away with skipping it roleplay wise. Unless I decided my character was morally opposed to bar fights or something.

If you ever picked up the Automatron DLC i'd say get Robotics Expert, but getting your Science, Armor, and Gun Crafting perks up never hurts. Sounds like all the weapons you use fall under Rifleman so make sure that's always maxed when you can get it. Other than that I usually just pick out whats fun. It's not really optimal but once I got ghoulish all the way up and could run through radiation naked. That was a weird character.

I haven't actually traveled with him yet. But I'm excited with all these glowing praises lol.

Yeah, I checked it out. Went on the heist quest as well with Bobbi and Mel (RIP Sonya :( ). My first attempt at breaking Mel free was really bad, the guards saw me and everyone in Diamond City is out for my blood...even Piper. Ouch. Then I reloaded and since the guards didn't see when I picked the lock they just turned a blind eye when Mel waltzed out right in front of their eyes.

I love the twist that we were actually digging under Hancock's saferoom all the while!

I tried ambushing Fahrenheit but man that lady doesn't play nice. Then I tried to actually talk to her and it worked really well lol.

Except for the part where she gave me a unique weapon and I was already encumbered. :( Nothing a dollop of Buffouts can't fix though.

I'm currently traveling with Hancock. A pretty cool thing is that he actually uses the weapon I ask him to equip. Piper seems to always default to her basic pistol when I'm not looking.

Goodneighbour is a pretty cool place. Ghouls and outlaws and robots (KLE0 reminds me of that feminist robot from Siki).

I also retook the Castle.
MAN that was an exciting mission. I swear the Mirelurk Queen looked like a kaiju from far away...but it was actually a fair deal smaller.

And...well, the missile wasn't really effective after the first shot since it takes a bit long to load and the Queen can move quite quick for its size. I just barraged her with my shotgun and handgun while running away and consuming Stimpak like there's no tomorrow lol.

Still, I'm excited that we took the Castle! Reminds me of Suikoden. And it's located, like, opposite of Sanctuary so now we have two major bases in the two corners of the map. Now if only I can get that supply chain perk...

The settlements are doing okay. It gets kinda repetitive if I make recruitment signal towers on all of them so I just turn them on for a few places. And even that I have to scramble a bit to get the necessities needed.
Also wow it's kinda weird they don't tell us what the randomly appearing Brahmins do, I had to Google dive to know.

I did some more tinkering with the guns and man I love it. The handgun is pretty cool cause it can shoot really fast with 20+ bullets and deal decent damage. I also learned that you can actually replace a gun's part if you have it in your inventory (for example, Long Barrel Handgun Mod) instead of making it from scratch.

On the money side, I make a lot of it by selling the ammos I don't typically use. Hurrah for 0 weight. ...well, not enough for getting the 10,000+ caps OP equips, but it's good enough to last me.

I found some armor parts that actually give stat boost (STR, END, and LUK). Wow. Now I just need to pimp them up a bit.

I'm happy that I can take on smaller groups of Super Mutants. But the ones occupying places like that Satellite Array and Water Treatment Plant are still too much for me. Especially if a Legendary Glowing Mutt spawns with them. >_>

And...just what is the Swan? I'm terrified. It has that skull next to its name.

Boston is actually pretty cool so far. What I 'enjoyed' the most are the nearly claustrophobic...downtown...I suppose? Where the buildings are very close and some roads are flooded and others are barred by raiders...

Not yet! I'm still too scared. It's crazy good design tho since its name is just Swan and its shape while submerged is incomprehensible. Maybe I'll give it a try soon.

I'm currently at level 32. I have maxed Social Links with Hancock, Piper, and Codsworth. Currently I'm bringing Preston but I also have initiated the first talk with Nick. His history IS interesting, as a prototype synth that somehow the anti-Ghoul Diamond City come to consider their own.

I did finish the main story quest where we get told that Shaun is in care of the Institute. And apparently about 10 years have passed between his kidnapping and our awakening.

But I've been enjoying the side quests and building up the settlements so far.
I love that I could take down a Deathclaw with only me and Hancock. (though I did have high ground since I was in a house on the second floor).

And my laser rifle (Perfect Authority?) is so good now, it can one hit kill Super Mutants while sneaking. I love picking off enemies from afar one by one. Even the Water Treatment Plant where I got dunked on just a few days ago were a cake walk.

What's interesting is there are actually planes in this game! Wow...that's so awesome. As far as I can see there are gunner planes and BoS planes.
The BoS seems to be doing some sort of vigilante cleaning up routine. When I played this morning, they just cleared two areas, one infested by Super Mutants and the other by Raiders (though I helped).

I've seen some new factions too...Forged and Children of Atom, mainly. And the aforementioned BoS knights. Exciting.

I don't carry Heavy Guns since honestly inventory management has been a problem. Maybe I should pick up Armorer so I can make deep pocketed armor pieces...

I've actually been playing a whole lot but I just didn't check in, sorry guys.

Well, I finished many of the optional quests but I was stuck at the Freedom Trail thing. So I looked up a bit of the guide so I had an idea what to do. I'll try again tonight.

I'm at the part of the story where I have to follow the Freedom Trail and find the Railmen (?) cus they supposedly know how to dissect this Courser's chip or something.

One thing I noticed is that FO4 is much more hi-tech and sci-fi than 3/NV. What with the airships, mind-walking like Assassin's Creed, Synths, and freaking TELEPORTATION.

In related news I did the quest where Jack Cabot's dad had superpowers because of an artifact. Wow, sure, we're going full on JoJo now?

But I let Jack kill him because man he sounds dangerous.

...unlike the Courser, who was a pushover against my shotgun.

Bethesda received a lot of pushback over Fallout 4's world design. Many of their quests and events seem to fall under the category of someone at the studio going, "Hey wouldn't it be cool if we...?" and then they shoved it into the game without considering it further.

The ultimate in this is a ruined refrigerator you find on the roadside with someone screaming inside. You open it up and there's a ghoul kid inside who's been trapped in there since the days the bombs dropped. It's ridiculous, over the top, and completely lore-breaking. (There's a related quest I'm not describing so as not to have to use spoiler tags, but trust me, it's more than just what I'm describing.)

I mostly don't mind. I turn a blind eye to the major worldbuilding details and just play the game. I'm pretty sure the developers at Bethesda do, too. But it also becomes pointedly obvious that Bethesda's writing team is not especially well-staffed. (It's 12 people in the credits, but those people are doing everything from constructing dialogue trees for every random NPC to building terminal text to working with the level designers to decide what each of the hundreds of locations look like.)

yeah, was gonna say, there's so real major difficulty spikes in the game except maybe in the beginning. The Corvega plant was tough the first time I got there. But eventually you pick up enough gear and perks that the only place that threatens to scare you is the Glowing Sea, because the enemies scale to your level there better.

That fridge thing sounds horrifying, like something out of RE.

Anyway, very busy days at work and haven't played much.
I got the Railmen to help with the machine to use the Course chip so I can teleport into the Institute HQ, but I decided to check out the other quests and dally around the Commonwealth a bit before continuing with the main story quest.

I was doing the quest with the grounded ship piloted by the robot Ironsides. There was a group of scavengers as well, but heck that would be boring and perhaps suicidal to side with them.

Well, this is much earlier, but I forgot to say that I found an actually working Vault lol. Might be my first. It's kinda amazing how they actually survived into current day.

And I learned that the Railmen are opposed to the BoS...hmm, I don't want to openly fight against them since the Vertibird and Knights seem annoying to fight.

Anyway, I got to the Instute and...SHAUN IS THE LEADER OF THE INSTITUTE.

Nice, son.

I mean, the Institute sure looks really nice...and it runs quite smoothly. Man, it's gonna be hard to say no to this. But I guess we still have time to figure out what's their true deal. So the 'disappearances' and 'kidnappings' were just the Institute taking back the runaway Synths who the Railroad helped escape...what an interesting dynamic.

If you think they only abduct escaped synths that isnt right they abduct regular people too. The Institute is basically a paradise but they do try to paint it to you in the best possible light when youre there.

I find it hard to choose a faction in 4, though I'm kind of glad I do. Because in New Vegas the choice was too easy (at least for me)

Haven't progressed much, but I did a quest with the Institute and several non story ones with the Railroad.

Also joined the Atomic Cats, meow! I had been tinkering with the power armor a bit and it's quite nifty to have with all the mods.

I'm at level 53 now. Maybe I should finish the game soon before I got too burnt out.

Is the ending still far away?

Atom Cats! Yes!

There are still a few great side quests you should consider tackling before you end the game. There arent many quests in Fallout 4 at all compared to the other games and fewer really good ones but there are a few. Like Vault 81, and Covenant.

Once you are forced to do a doing this quest will make you an enemy of blank quest than I think theres only one or two after that. And youre pretty close to that already. The glowing sea and reaching the institute are pretty close to the end.

Did you get Vergils cure? And find out what happens to the humans the Institute replaces.

Well, we'll see...

In other news, now I'm dating my baby daddy Preston Garvey.
So you utterly believe the institute. Lol

Every time I read about Fallout 4 it makes me want to go back and play it and the DLC that I never got around to. Maybe I should do that once I see a sale on the version that packs in everything since I no longer have my base copy.

Super rich coming from Corrik lol

To Raka and david i'd like to once again highly recommend Far Harbor as one of the best DLCs of any Fallout game, it's highly worth it.

Far Harbor is great. And it's got fantastic armor. I'd say it and Nuka World are probably my favorite Fallout DLC's.

I went to Vault 81 and discovered the Vault 82 thing, it was bonkers. And Curie is just the sweetest. I can listen to that French accent all day. She's my current traveling companion.

Other than that I haven't played much though. I guess I did return the cat.

I don't know/remember what that is. And the second one...not yet, now that I think about it.

Vergil (might be spelled differently) is the Super Mutant you met in the Glowing Sea that was an Institute Scientist and he helped you build the teleporter in exchange for his research from the institute.

OH. Right. I totally didn't catch that that they're doing it with everyone.

The Golden Deer house! Oh wait, wrong game.

For serious though, I'm tempted to just say to heck with it and side with Foundation despite their seedier side. I mean it'll be a shame to let hundreds of years' worth of progress go to waste.
