It doesn't help that this year's entry is actually missing features, as well.

What a shitty game, even by modern WWE standards.

'17 and '19 were pretty fun though.

Reminds me of this glitched WCW PS1 game my friend had. You could do moves not even near the opponents. Pile drivers resulted in your opponent doing a handstand and moving his arms out of the way, and power bombs made them leap up in the air, curl up and fall back down.

I liked Wrestlemania 2000 because every move had a counter-timing regardless of your energy/hype level... so fights would basically devolve into who misses their counter-timing.

The only way it could have been better is if the moves got slightly faster after a counter so that the chains were more epic

It doesn't help that this year's entry is actually missing features, as well.

The main feature this game is missing is an actual development team.

Yuke's has been making the games for about 20 years, and they finally got tired of dealing with 2K's bullshit and left the company. So the NBA2k team got thrown onto the job instead, and they were working with an engine they didn't really know how to use. Which is a large part of why this wound up being such a total shitshow.

As someone mentioned, it's like the equivalent of moving out of your house, leaving all of your stuff behind, and then the person who moves in after you has to keep and use all your stuff. So it will take them a while to figure out where you keep everything, how all your appliances work, and how to do things.

It also doesn't really help that the only thing 2K actually cares about is how effectively any given game can be used as a platform to dispense microtransactions, at the expense of actual gameplay and enjoyment.

On the plus side, there are at least some hints that Yuke's might be going to work on an AEW game soon, and will be deliberately using No Mercy as inspiration for what sort of game they want it to be. So that should be a win all around.

Aren't all of the WWE games in the past decade or so known for odd glitches and bugs though?

Most games in general over the last decade or so are known for odd glitches and bugs early in release. It's the curse of a development culture that can go "Ehh, we'll Day 1 patch it so no need for it to be perfect." It's one of the problems I called becoming a thing way back when online connectivity for consoles first became a thing.

The WWE games generally haven't been any worse than any other games, though. And there've been incremental improvements in graphics and stuff (even if the writing is terrible), helped by the fact that it's basically been running on the same engine for years, so they've worked a lot of the bugs out long ago.

Which is part of why the backlash to the current one is so strong - no one expected the game to be as as dramatically bad as it is, especially since it's drastically worse than previous games in pretty much every way. But that hasn't really been the trend for the franchise at all up to this point.

More and more games will be like this in years to come as students are shittier and shittier. And on the other end of the scale, the corrupt fucking devs watch us just deal with it and grin, "Weeeelll, looks like he doesn't mind too much."

We're basically beta testing games now. It'll be paid alpha soon. Then people will be so goddam dumb, we'll all be stuck with tiger electronics games while we drink Brawndo and talk like mumble rappers.

I can't wait!

A lot of people shit on Yuke's for how glitchy and bug-ridden previous entries in the WWE2K series were, but this is what a WWE2K game looks like without them.

The problem of day 1 bugs sucks, but I'd live with that as long as they weren't gamebreaking.

The real problem is 3 months after launch when bugs still exist and the developer and production/finance managers at the round table meeting look at us gamers like a bunch of kids and say, "Well, enough of them bought it now. Let's not keep putting costs into the project since it is lowering our overall bottomline. It is good enough. So what if there are stat glitches that make it impossible for the user to keep or obtain all maxed stats on Fallout. They'll get over it."

There should be a standard they have to live up to.
