Greetings Eorzeans and Erebonians, and welcome to a second (!) topic in a row with me, Quinton Chloe Nocturne, present and accounted for! I hope you've all grabbed your pocky and your merlot and your death sticks, because there is much to discuss.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses has just shadow-launched its third wave of DLC, and it's the big one. Be sure to check out impressions on the playability of Char Aznable after the jump, and stay tuned for scholarly analysis on the importance of interacting with cats and dogs in monasteries throughout the JRPG medium. Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield release in -- wow, as I type this, literally exactly one week -- and if you're one of the thirteen people in the great state of Massachusetts who have never played this time-honored franchise because you've been holding off until a pending generational debut is mired in more controversy than Richard Nixon, congrats and welcome to the team. Death Stranding: voted most divisive video game three years running. It's out now, so take a hike. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is also right around the corner, but Clarke only knows I ain't got time right now.

I do have time for other Star Wars, however. The Mandalorian is just days away, fulfilling a childhood dream of mine to see live action Star Wars TV. Resistance Reborn, a prequel to this December's LinkMarioSamus magnum opus The Rise of Skywalker, is on my Audible app and ready to go. And the Marvel Star Wars comics just keep delivering.

But right now, the hot topic is of course the cold hard truth. Trails of Cold Steel III: Nightmares for Quinton-sama is taking y'all by storm whilst I myself save the world and Hildibrand's fashion sensibility in Final Fantasy XIV. I'm a level 57 red mage with a passion for spiraling myself around the battlefield like Noctis himself. My mission is to catch all the Triple Triad cards. You can help. As for Cold Steel, the general consensus is obvious: this is, hands down, a video game. You can expect plenty of chatter about both these experiences during this week's SELFcast.

Good ol Trails - the one series I will say is great but can never in good conscience recommend to anyone who isn't super into JRPGs.

For what it's worth I do believe that Falcom is interested. I think the problem is more that no US company wants to go through the effort to localize them.

I feel like Ys 9 localization news is overdue. That game should be a lot easier to localize than Trails, and the Ys series sells way more in the West.

Eh, I usually just skim them. They're not relevant to the plot at all.

It is worth it to try to collect them all though because some of them can be traded in for items later on once you have them all.

Last night I finished day 2 of the chapter 4 field study.

Pretty clearly my least favorite part of the game so far. I don't know about other people, but this is an aspect of the Trails games I've never especially cared for. I'm in the game for mostly for the characters and how they act to change things in the world, so when you start talking about ancient beasts from the Dark Ages or something I really just don't care. I think pretty much in all aspects I'm not as interested in the lore/history of the world (at least anything further in the past than ~40 years before the start of the series) as the average player, but this specific aspect is one that I find particularly uninteresting.

But anyway yeah, couple that with one of the most tedious and annoying dungeons the series has offered thus far and it makes for not an ideal Trails experience for pyresword. Hoping this is not indicative of where the story is going for the remainder of CS3 and CS4.

I often don't read the books in the Trails series, but I don't agree with the statement that they aren't relevant.

Certainly they are not relevant in the sense of "you need to read this to understand what's going on", but they do provide information about the world as well as oftentimes (if not every time for the main books?) feature actual characters in the series who appear and are important later on.

On one hand I could just say forget about it and fill out the character notes on ng+ higher difficulty run for the Platinum, with a guide.

On the other, after the practical exam I got rewarded with more AP for doing the hidden quest that wasn't marked on the map, which I only found by talking to everyone. So I now feel like I have to.
