Really annoying to have to do this, but

1). This wasn't a "young girl" - it was a 19 year-old starfucker
2). The sex was almost certainly consensual
3). The case was dismissed because there was literally no evidence other than the accusation and was in all likelihood fabricated

So no, Kobe Bryant most likely was not a rapist.

i mean, even if he wasn't a rapist he still fucked a 19 year old girl while he was married. doesn't seem like he was a great person tbqh.

Having sex with a legal age woman while married means you cheated. Nothing else. It isn't illegal, it isn't anything else besides having cheated.

I am not the biggest Kobe fan, but I don't think many are arguing that Kobe is a perfect man here either. He can have flaws and still be respected and celebrated as a person upon his death.

Acting like someone can't be a great person because they could have made a mistake in their life makes you ripe for criticism.

"Oh hey, you know Kobe might not have been a great person because he cheated on his wife before!"

It's a holier than thou stance. You have never been in his position before to honestly prove how you would act in it. Kobe probably had thousands of the hottest women in the world throwing themselves at him over his status. Did he fuck up once? Did he fuck up thousands of times? Did he do the right thing every time and have a moment of weakness? I mean, who really the fuck knows. But, who knows what you would have done in that scenario either.

Kobe probably wasn't a saint, but hardly seems like going hey Kobe wasn't perfect in regards to his death is gonna not come off as holier than thou either.

You can do it if you want. It's your choice. But, I wouldn't be acting like criticism in return as being harsh should be unexpected.

During the preliminary hearing, Detective Winters testified that the accuser had been examined the day after the alleged assault by Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE) at the Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs, Colorado.
[The nurse] stated that there were several lacerations to the victims posterior fourchette or vaginal area, and two of those lacerations were approximately one centimeter in length, testified Det. Winters. And there were many, I believe, 2 millimeter lacerations. Too many to count [The nurse] stated that the injuries were consistent with penetrating genital trauma. That its not consistent with consensual sex.
Detective Winters further stated that the nurse told him the vaginal injuries had most likely occurred within 24 hours, and that the accuser had a small bruise on her left jaw line. Also, that examiners had found blood excretions on Bryants T-shirt to about the waistline. The blood, testified Det. Winters, had the same DNA profile as the victim in this case.

There's a pretty good chance he raped her. Not to mention his confession before the Civil case and ultimately his decision to settle.

There is a large difference in the context of those deaths. Most of us are too young to remember Bush's presidency, but this extremely untimely death has much more impact. There is an emotional component to the shows and whys of death, and the more sudden and unexpected, the less likely it is for people to be receptive to your immediate "Actually" mentality. The best part of valor, I've found, is just to not make a referendum out of peoples' deaths ever. Except fictional deaths. Go to town on those.

I haven't read the topic that closely but from my understanding most of the criticism has been in relation to people derailing the topic over the legal system. I stand by what I said in regards to if you didn't respect someone when they were alive you're under no obligation to start respecting them just because they died. Having tact in that scenario is also important though.

I never said that and you know it. This sort of attempt to obfuscate my point by painting it as ridiculous through your isolated lens is rude and wrong. I was tempting to soothe a growing rift and you are behaving petulantly to someone just trying to offer some understanding of perspective.

My opening remark was explaining why you would get pushback on one topic when the other offered little. If Rutherford B. Hayes died today, no one would really care. If Chris Evans died, it would hit so much harder given his relevance and saturation in our lives.

I firmly believe that topics like this are never meant for editorializing. You don't show up to a funeral and begin to curse the deceased. It's bad form. Given our long tenures here and connections, topics like this are our board's tiny tributes to the subjects of discussion, and what really matters here is knowing your audience. If people are experiencing shock and grief, read it, understand it and use that empathy to determine whether your posts contribute positively or negatively at that moment.

I just don't understand the point of bringing up Kobe's shortcomings right now. That was a very public event. If you know Kobe enough to be saddened by his death, you remember that. This isn't the time to throw it in people's faces in an attempt to make them feel bad for feeling sad over a guy's death because you think he's a terrible person and doesn't deserve it. Telling people how to react to death doesn't exactly make you look like an upstanding guy either.

Calling your opinion milquetoast does not negate the context of the topic and how your posts fit into that. Not every topic functions in the same way. If you need a discussion to vent about this, creating a separate topic feels like the right road there, rather than trying to usurp the purpose this topic has developed and commandeer the narrative. Your posts aren't wrong, but the context of them does you no favors.

the thing is, people are just going to have different opinions on what qualifies as "bad form" in these kinds of topics. i'm (obviously) in the minority on this one. it's not a new debate at all. i've been on the board long enough to remember that when michael jackson died, shake immediately posted "uh guys he was kind of a sexual predator" and got utterly obliterated for doing this. i still sided with shake on that one for the most part, though i don't think the evidence about MJ's crimes was as strong back then as it is now (this was pre-leaving neverland, obviously).

but yeah, there's not much point in continuing a debate on this, as it's not a debate that's based in arguments or reason. it's just going to be a shouting match.

Honestly, given the full context of this particular event, which includes his daughter passing away in the crash, that this probably isn't the topic to revisit/relitigate the allegations against him - and I say that as someone who thinks that episode would be relevant to a more open-ended "legacy/history/biography" type discussion.

But given how this particular tragedy occurred and the fact there were 8 other victims and not just Kobe I would side with this topic not being the right venue for it.
