How exactly is that "she didn't view it as consensual"? Not asking as an insult, but are you on the spectrum and unable understand human body language/nonverbal cues? That's the only way I could understand your interpretation if it's genuine.

People aren't perfect. That includes celebrities. They make mistakes too, sometimes really really bad ones. But when they learn from those mistakes and spend the rest of their life trying to grow and change into a better person, then why still condemn them for a mistake that happened so long ago?

Don't forgive him for the crime, but acknowledge that he spent the rest of his days trying to make up for it. And respect that people are trying to grieve for someone that probably was overall a good person because let's be real you don't know for sure either way. You never do, with anyone. People are good at hiding things.

At the very least just stop arguing about it. What does it gain you? Even if you are right and he did commit the crime, okay? Congratulations on being right I guess. Have a cookie.

This is where I am as well in terms of my thoughts. There have been countless examples of Kobe doing something dumb and then working to both change himself and then make a difference in the community. Obviously that doesn't make what he did go away but it's not like he was like "yeah I did it, fuck you", and then never worked to be better.

Leon already pointed this out a few times I believe, but it seems weird to me that people would come in here just to say, "oh hey wasn't that the guy that did that horrible thing", as if less than 100% of the people who were already grieving didn't know about his past. Zero people read that and said, "oh yeah you're right, I will choose to stop grieving now". We all know it happened, and we all have chosen whether we wish to grieve in light of that or not, so I just don't see how it contributes anything.

But that's just me. You can post what you want. It is a little odd to be on the defensive after coming in here with a point that is clearly going to be hated on, though.

Kobe does indeed seem to have made considerable efforts to better himself, and thats part of his story too. Im certainly not trying to dismiss that. But its not something that cancels out his past wrongs, just as his accomplishments are not wiped out by those wrongs. Theyre all part of his life, and a complete accounting acknowledges it all.

I agree with you here, of course, but I think what many of the people here are trying to say is "yes we know what he did was wrong, and we still choose to grieve".

In that case, there isn't really much to say, but it seems like despite that being the sentiment, some people refuse to accept that opinion and want to keep saying, "no but really, he did something wrong, you shouldn't be grieving", as if they are the authority of who and who should not be grieved.

I would be cool with people posting about whatever, if they didn't appear to be so defensive about it, which not all of them have been. Except that I don't understand that all the comments about making a different topic were just ignored. Yes, this is a message board and not his funeral, but it's kinda as if you came into a room with these points where people were mourning and they asked you to take the discussion to the room next to it instead, but you just wouldn't.

This may be true, but let's be real, that accounts for maybe 10% of why people are upset he died. The other 90% is that he was good at basketball. His death would be seen as a tragedy regardless of how he was as a person.

anyway, let me say this about the whole thing: my post about kobe cheating was rather tone-deaf. i don't even know much about kobe. when i posted "he didn't seem like a great person," i truly meant to say "he didn't SEEM like a great person based on what i'm reading here. but i don't know for sure." i didn't mean to say "he kinda sucked," as several people were interpreting what i said. i hoped that i would start the kind of discussion that took place later in the topic, in which people explained that he worked hard to improve as a person. if that had happened, i would have said "oh nice, guess he wasn't as bad as he seemed to be at first." however, i should have been more aware of the way my post came across. part of the problem is that i don't care much about celebrity deaths - i have never mourned a celebrity passing away and probably never will - so this isn't the kind of thing i can identify with easily, but i should have realized that stuff like this means a lot to tons of people. if i truly upset people mourning kobe's death with my comments about him, i apologize. that was not my intention.

the people who immediately started insulting and belittling me in response to my mistake can still fuck off, though.

The odds of dying by flying (via helicopter, plane, ect.) are significantly lower than those of dying in a car accident. It's a freak accident when it does happen.

He said he viewed it as consensual but he now realizes that she didn't. No shit why else would he be going to trial. He was just trying to take the high road

And as for the signs of rape in her exam, she showed up in underwear with another man's semen and pubes so that's not really evidence that can be used against Kobe specifically. Also iirc several of her friends claim she bragged about having sex with Kobe Bryant.
