you hear close-minded, disparaging shit all of the time (in places like san francisco no less) - on another note, i'll never forget this comment my friend once made, where he explained that most people in places like san francisco aren't actually open-minded, but rather just tolerant seems like such a simple distinction to make, but it blew my mind at the time and definitely made me reevaluate things --- live and let live ... Louisville, KY here. This is an interesting topic, because Louisville receives two different misconceptions. The first is that it's backwater Kentucky territory; the second is that this a super-progressive oasis in a red state (CAIN-TUCKEH, no less).
The truth is in the middle. Redneck/good ol' boy culture is pervasive throughout the city, but we have a smattering of hipster neighborhoods where that's distinctly kept to a minimum. Louisville takes LGBT support very seriously, but I've witnessed more flagrant racism here than when I lived in the Indiana Bible Belt. It's a weird dichotomy that doesn't fall into either of the stereotypes in my first paragraph. Some accurate conceptions of Louisville, though: -It's rundown and dirty as fuck. People here litter like it's their full-time job, I've never seen anything like it. -Louisvillians go crazy about My Morning Jacket and Jack Harlow. Also, college basketball. -The cost of living is remarkably low. -The booze is fantastic. --- The music was thud-like. The music was... thud-like. ... Copied to Clipboard!

Everyone is nice (Minnesota nice). This is actually somewhat true. Im from MN as well but Ive moved around a lot in the last 10 years. Its difficult to go back to my hometown because everyone moves so slow to try to be nice to others. 4-way stops are annoying because everyones always trying to wave to the guy who got there at almost the same time as them who is also trying to wave. Trying to cross the street as a pedestrian is annoying because people will stop and wave you across even if theyre the only car on the road and youre not at a crosswalk. No one talks about Central Pennsylvania. No one talks about Connecticut either. The income taxes are a little high here, but the sales tax is the worst. But then, sales tax in general is the worst. Greenwich sucks and Hartford is owned by insurance companies(I've never been to Stamford). It brings an otherwise mediocre state down. Bridgeport and Waterbury are open wounds and nobody cares to do much more than slap a bandaid on them occasionally. New Haven is pretty good though. Not exciting, mind you, but it's chock full of good museums and lots of great restaurants. The best thing about the state is that you can't throw a rock without hitting great pizza, at least in New Haven county.
