@wittymillennial , do you not see the irony in starting an argument with, "the science isn't conclusive", and ending with "but go look at some vegan forums, people have health problems"?

That's a pretty tenuous source of information at best.

Not to mention implying rearing cows doesn't also include any of the same environmental impacts of growing plants. What do the cows eat?

Or to suggest they're remotely the same quantitively...

Of course you choose to ignore everything I said and reduce it to a soundbite that makes no sense.

I actually wasn't responding to your post at all. I was referring to the simplistic mentality laypeople have about it. My dad has studied nutrition extensively, that's why he is capable of doing so without deficiency or even much supplementation. I dont see how pointing out that someone who is an expert at it can do it is saying that it's easy or for everyone. I was cautioning people against jumping into the deep end without a life preserver.

Pretty much just heard my colleague make every cliche anti-veganism argument under the sun upon learning that another colleague is vegan, including:

* "People have been eating meat for hundreds of thousands of years"
* "I knew a vegan who became anaemic from being vegan, it's just not good for you, you can't survive just on vegetables"
* "My mate ordered a vegan sausage roll from greggs and it was absolutely disgusting looking"
* "You're burning up the amazon rainforests by eating all the plants"
* "We have canine teeth for a reason"

I'm sitting here creasing because the man has type 2 diabetes from his daily diet of cake for breakfast, tinned soup for lunch and chinese takeaway for dinner.

He seriously ate cake breakfast? Everyday? Cereal is still cheap in most cases and he should've gone to some place and ordered half a salad.

Are you sure it wasn't scones?

when you 'go vegan' you're literally removing what is generally the most expensive ingredient from all your meals.

All of the meat I eat is free or near free. The most expensive ingredient in my meals is bread or cheese.

This is a pretty exclusive case man. He's right. Fish and steak is expensive.

I'm not trying to be shitty here, but he's wrong. He also didn't specify fish and steak.

I eat fish, squirrel, rabbit, turkey, boar, and deer regularly throughout the year and it costs practically nothing.

He said: "when you 'go vegan' you're literally removing what is generally the most expensive ingredient from all your meals."

For me to 'go vegan' I'd literally have to remove what is definitely the least expensive ingredient from all my meals.

Again, not trying to be shitty, just saying.

I'm saying your situation is unusual because for most people those items are expensive, in some cases prohibitively so.

Where do you live ans who do you associate with that boar and other game costs practically nothing? That's not a typical scenario.

Texas has pretty flimsy restrictions on hunting feral hogs because of their destructive nature as an invasive species. I don't think you even need a license to shoot them if you're on private property and I know people who've killed them on public property without issue.

In the years that ultimately led up to my decision to go vegan, I realized how fucked up factory farming is and had considered only eating what I could fish and hunt, and with me being very close to an abundance of hog, I decided to lean on that specifically. My brother went out and hunted one for us to try.

We made some sausages and smoked some of it and I honestly found it to be disgusting. It was so disgusting, in fact, that I could no longer eat any pig meat without hearkening back to that taste. Even to this day, there's this lingering odor in pork products that makes me want to retch. It really expedited my decision to forgo meat altogether. Everyone else loved it though and he still kills a few a year, though he does all of his processing, cooking, and storing at our mom's house because I'm not dealing with that shit.

I live in the US, in a rural area. All of the animals I listed can be found on my property. Many of them come into my yard to eat my garden.

Killing them costs as much as a bullet or an arrow (if it breaks). Fish can be caught with a worm. Squirrel and rabbit can be trapped with small amounts of nuts or veggies.

I can and do grow food (corn, beans, potatoes, peppers, onions, etc) for free too, but it takes more time, energy, and dedicated land.

Meat is the cheapest and easiest food for me to get. Going vegan would be very expensive for me and most of the people I know.

I won't pretend to know anything about health and nutrition, because I don't.

Edit: @ above post. I had boar sausage for breakfast yesterday and today lol. I've been eating wild game my whole life but I know some people don't like it. Maybe it's an acquired taste type of thing like beer or coffee.

I was surprised to find it so repulsive. I enjoyed eating deer and elk, as well as other less conventional types of meat (by American standards, anyway) like goat and rabbit.

it's a place to start looking at any rate. and when the forums are all flooded with the same complaints, you can start to form a scientific argument for something. You can look else where too, like some countries have banned vegan diets for children because vegan children were coming to doctors extremely deficient in key nutrients. So it's not like you can't find the data, I just pointed you in a direction where you can start looking. I'm not doing your homework for you.

shop sales, load up for a couple of weeks, wait for the next sale. But yes if you buy ribeye when it's not on sale you're going to pay a lot.

I also argue fruits and vegetables are expensive as fuck. Plus you have to cut that stuff up and prepare it, buy seasoning and sauces. Bread also isn't cheap, unless you want whatever passes for wal mart cheapo bread(i'm not convinced it's real bread, at my stomach hates me when I've had it). And some vegan foods aren't exactly cheap. I do want to reemphasize the amount of time vegans spend prepping food is is worth factoring in here. I don't have a hard number on it, but it's a lot more than just throwing some meat on the stove as meat by itself is quite tasty, often needing only just salt, the same is never true for a vegan meal.

Now yes, you can go cheapo vegan, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are cheap as fuck, but that's not healthy to eat just that.

Meanhile I can throw a steak or liver or something on, with minimal prep, and all it really needs is salt. Of course you could go the cheap meat route and get ground beef, 3 lbs for under 10 bucks can be a staple in 3 meals or more easily.

Just saying, buying meat isn't as expensive as people are claiming.

yeah because "all those" people who say "I saw a friend go vegan and he DIED" , right? Double standards. Both sides have nutcases.

I even knew a dude that would WAAAAHHHHH if anyone who eats meat "dared" to say he didn't like animal cruelty, sort of like "HOW CAN U BE AGAINST THE YULIN DOG MEAT FESTIVAL IF U ATE A HAMBURGER TODAY? WWAAAHHHH!". Actually, that dude posts in CE....

Because apparently dropping meat and just eating vegan is the healthiest route, fuck being advised about it.

Also everyone has been calling that wittymillenial guy or laughing at what he said but no one seems to be actually refuting any of his points, i kinda wanted to see the other side of the coin other than anecdotal evidence or "you're wrong", then again this is CE, where instead of actual conversations or dialogue everything turns into a shit flinging contest with you monkeys, from both sides.
