Tell that to all the healthcare providers, working class, retail employees, and civil servant people who literally can't afford to.

Many jobs where you use a computer allow you to work from home though....which is a ton of workers.

So this one suggestion is completely irrational because it doesn't apply to every US worker?

Also here's a bunch of stats about how remote working has greatly increased in the last 10+ years.

"In China, more than three quarters of the cases have been classified as mild. Symptoms include low-grade fever and a cough. Some people also experience fatigue, headaches and, less frequently, diarrhea.
Overall, the death rate in China is estimated at 2 percent, and the average age of death among those with COVID-19 is in the 70's. People with underlying medical problems, and particularly smokers, seem to be at higher risk.
Compared to prior outbreaks of novel viruses, this coronavirus appears less deadly than other human coronaviruses that have spread in recent years. For instance, the death rate was about 34% for MERS, and about 10% for SARS.

The average American who is at risk from the virus is over 70 years old. So their job situation probably isnt much of a concern.

Anyone with the option to already does. It's like telling people if they cant eat becaise there's no food, they should go buy food. Anyone with the option already knows they can do that, so it simply irritated those who cant and produces nothing positive.

Yeah I'm a casino dealer at a casino in the downtown of a relatively big American city, so I definitely can't work from home.

And we only have a few sick days to use in the first place, so if the virus actually pops up in our city idk what we're supposed to do, but I guess I'll just call off and possibly lose my job.

It's a weird situation cause the only way to actually prevent it is to not be out in public and whatnot, but if we were to all call off and shit than we'll all lose our jobs, so wtf are we supposed to do?

Like Artemis mentioned, it's alienating to those who don't have that option and with the way the media has been covering the virus, it's also demoralizing to that population of workers. Those people matter.

So the CDC should not disseminate information to protect over half the public from a potential pandemic because some people will be offended that they cannot work from home?

Are you trolling? Is this actually what your argument is now?

Um I am missing something? This guy isn't from the CDC. He's just a medical contributor for CBS.

The CDC's website doesn't say to work from home either. It does say if you are sick to call out or for employers to send people who are sick home though.

I'm not sure if you are trying to imply corona is less dangerous because of its seemingly low mortality rate but that's still pretty damn high and much more importantly, what makes corona so dangerous is that it will probably have a very high reproduction number, i.e. it spreads much faster than the flu or SARS.

Corona is dangerous because it's "novel". Most of the people suddenly exposed to it have no natural immunity.

No, but to put out a blanket statement that people should work from home, when a grand number of jobs do not allow for that is just dense. For some folks this would ruin them.

Literally is a relevant suggestion for a majority of workers.

Should they stop releasing all pronouncements since everything can't be applicable to every single American? Can't tell people to wash their hands to prevent the spread of germs during flu season, since that isn't applicable to amputees and will offend them!

Seriously. Think about how this makes ME feel. Those people who can work from home don't deserve any type of suggestions for being safe.

Like, why even suggest something if it doesn't apply to ALL?

They also mentioned potentially shutting down schools....UHHH how does this help those of us who don't go to school? Fucking CDC....

Everyone screaming about this can shut down all criticism of it by pointing to a single example of a person who currently has the option to work from home, but would voluntarily choose an expensive commute and cramped cubicle UNTIL a government body advises them to work from home instead.

Everyone I've ever met who could work from home already is. Every one.

Hmmm I should try this. I'll buy my employees walkie talkies and while I'm sitting on my couch sipping some coffee I tell them their quota for the day. If they fuck up I announce I'm writing them up, and if need be say "You're fired, walk yourself out, please."

Then they announce "Bruh, we're working out of our homes because of coronavirus."

At that moment I realize we're all probably out of a job because we have to physically be there to run the machines to do our job.

Thanks CDC.
