For me as crazy as it sounds it was the NES. I had only an atari 2600 when I was super little. One day I was home alone with my older brother and he had to take me with him if he went somewhere.

So his friend comes over to tell my brother he just got something called a nintendo. I got to go with them and see it. And the game he put in was I think a game called Ikari Warriors and compared to Atari games it looked like it was from the future. I was like 7 or something and I couldn't believe what I was looking at

I wasnt impressed enough to actually really start playing games until gen 3.... but it was never mind blowing, things finally looked interesting enough to be engaging.

Their was some early 3d stuff.... riddle of the sphinx? I dont think that's it, but it was waaaaaaayyy too slow. Like 3fps slow.

16 bit impressed me, it was SNES's gimmick where it would put a character on a background layer and zoom it into the screen, like contra 3 and super metroid.

Gen 5 didnt really impress me.

Gen 6 is where my mind was blown.

Started with the massive leap in detail, where stuff finally actually looked like it was supposed to, like you saw a drawing of the character in the manual and looked at the screen and went yup, that's the dude, and ended with normal mapping, havok physics, ,and unified lighting and shading, stealing the thunder from gen 7, which just did the same but bigger and better.

misread the topic title, but probably Metal Gear Solid.

I remember getting a video game magazine when I was younger and seeing pictures of the game, and how enemies could react to footsteps in the snow, and I remember that blowing my mind.

I used my birthday money to buy a PSX just so I could play it.

honestly, Halo. I never really liked FPSs before it, because I just couldn't ever see what was going on. The clarity that game had has amazing. There were probably a few other "that looks nice" moments over the years before it, but that's the "wow" game for me.

going from Final Fantasy 6 to Final Fantasy 8. I mean, despite how messed up the game was, at the time, it was arguably the most gorgeous game on the Playstation. It was even better as it was the PC version my buddy showed me, where the graphics looked even better as they fixed some of the jagged pixels.

Mario 64

I grew up with a SNES. That was all I ever knew. Jumping from 2D to smooth, fully explorable 3D was insane. I had played star fox, vortex, 3d stuff like that on the SNES, but nothing prepared me for that massive leap forward.

Mario Kart 64. It was the first N64 game I'd seen; it was at a friend's house and he wasn't keen on playing Super Mario 64 or Star Fox 64 when friends were over because they were either singleplayer or sorely lacking in multiplayer features.

While I've been impressed by graphics occasionally afterwards, that would be the only case of being 'mind-blown'.

Probably Zelda: The Wind Waker. What really blew my mind was seeing the islands far off in the distance slowly grow bigger as you sailed closer to them. That feeling stuck with me through every open world game where I could see something in the distance and actually go there, like GTA4/5 and RDR1/2, and World of Warcraft.

As far as being blown away purely by lifelike visuals, probably Call of Duty 4. I didn't think games would ever look better and the Xbox 360 was the peak of gaming, lol.

I think we're finally going to reach that point of pure photorealism soon though, and the only improvements made will be scale and AI behavior. Like GTA10 would look graphically similar to GTA6 but it could be the big three areas (San Andreas, Liberty City, Vice City) and every building would have a full interior and all of the NPCs have lives that go on whether you're there or not. I think that already happens to some extent in RDR2.
