Ugh

I don't know that the Supreme Court necessarily made the wrong call (it would be very dangerous precedent), but it's absolutely absurd that the WI GOP wouldn't cooperate and move it in a far less sketchy way like Evers wanted.

Yeah, even lifelong Republicans that I know are pissed, at least the ones I know. This could be really bad for them long term (as it should be, absolute bullshit move by them), since the state Republicans decided to prioritize keeping power through ridiculous voter suppression tactics over the wellbeing of voters.

Keep in mind that these are the same people who went after the Governors powers after Evers won, because "a lot of people wouldn't agree with the things he wants to do" or some garbage thing like that. These people are the worst

I got my absentee ballot and mailed in in last week already, same with my parents. They fucked up on my wifes though, and she requested hers weeks ago. They finally mailed it today, so if she wants to vote she'll have to go out and go to a polling place, and she's one of the people who's at very high risk if she catches the coronavirus.
Well, again, this is a ruling based on their laws. Republicans follow what is written.

Likely the date had to be moved by other means other than executive order.

So that's why they used a Lame Duck session to strip Evers of the powers they gave Scott Walker after he won? They lost, and they changed the rules. That's how they operate. They couldn't care less about following the "law", the only thing they care about is making sure that they stay on top.

The state legislature could have legally moved it like many other states did. They refused to because the WI GOP thought it would hurt them electorally (even though it would have been much better for public health).

Did Republicans there ever give a reason for why they wanted the vote to not move? Or was there disagreement on how to move it?

All I see is Evers asked for unlimited absentee ballot voting or something and Republicans wouldn't do that. (obviously).

In a joint statement on Friday, legislative GOP leaders dismissed Evers last-minute plea, saying that hundreds of thousands of workers still were attending their jobs every day.
Theres no question that an election is just as important as getting take-out food, the statement said.

Oh ho.

Lol. Talk about shooting yourselves in the foot with that reasoning lol.

This, however, is an easy decision. It's time for every Republican legislator to do their jobs and take a vote on this commonsense proposal to extend the election date so everyone can vote safely from home. I urge every Wisconsinite to contact their legislators and demand a vote.

The only part that confuses me is that in almost everything I am seeing Evers just kept pushing for absentee balloting and not moving the date back. Is that what caused it all?

Some Democrats blame Mr. Evers for letting the situation get out of hand, saying that his early refusal to push for a delay of the primary instead proposing workarounds like deploying the National Guard to work at understaffed polling places created electoral confusion.

Evers signed an executive order to move the primary back to June. The State Supreme Court said no.

Milwaukee will have a whopping 5 polling places open (they normally have 180), for a population of almost 600,000,and that's the hardest hit area of the state as far as the coronavirus goes. Absolute bullshit.

He did.

Evers ordered the lawmakers meet in special session Monday morning to pass legislation for a later election day.
The Republican-controlled Legislature ignored the request and closed the session without any lawmakers present.

I guess getting a state quorum isn't as hard as a national one, but still. The question is why is he asking monday morning for that and not earlier?

This doesn't seem like one side pushed for it being moved back and the other side refused the whole time.

It seems like one side pushed for voting by mail the whole time and it was refused.... so then last second tried to move it when it might have been too late.

It's weird because Mike DeWine literally did the same thing successfully in Ohio

I'm quite confident both were doing it for public health reasons but have mixed feelings because it's something that could be done nefariously in the future (e.g. I wouldn't put it past Trump in November). We need to get national vote by mail now so we don't have this issue in the general (I'm totally fine with any new laws saying that it's only for this year's elections, but it needs to be done).

(e.g. I wouldn't put it past Trump in November).
Trump can't do shit about it, elections are held by the states. Even if he somehow managed the fantasy of postponing the election, the Constitution dictates his term ends on January 20. If we somehow got there without elections, both he and Pence would see their terms expire and I think line of succession would fall to either the Speaker (Pelosi) or the President pro tempore of the Senate.

Speaker is tricky because Congress's terms would have also expired but Speaker is selected by the House and doesn't have to be a member so I'm not sure if she'd just retain her Speaker position in this ridiculous "the House has no members" scenario. The Senate would break into chaos because all Class 2 Senators would have their terms expire and Democrats would actually gain the majority with them vacant 35-32. President pro tempore is the Senator of the majority party with the highest seniority so that'd be the Senior Senator of Vermont - nope, not actually Sanders lol! - Leahy. However, in this scenario I imagine if you have appointments to the vacancies flying all over the place and it's just a mess.

and it'll never happen

I'm thinking that sports commissioner meeting that Schefter tweeted about over the weekend was Trump pushing them to start up sports ASAP.

Just today we have the PGA Tour releasing a preliminary schedule that seems... plausible, if optimistic, with a major in August (plausible to me in that Golf lends itself well to social distancing and assuming they keep the public out.) But more jarringly, ESPN is reporting that MLB is working towards a plan that would see them start things up in May. The plan seems to be to turn the Phoenix area into something of a bubble and play all games there without fans but that still strikes me as super unrealistic.

If only there was a way to identify us citizens that could be entered on their mailed ballot. Maybe some sort of number given to all citizens and used to officially identify them for government purposes like filing taxes.

Oh wait we have that.
Just require everyone write their social security number on their ballots. Ballots that would already list the person's name so you would have to have both the right ballot and know the number.

That would actually make it tougher than many states have set up at polling places.

Ok how about this: Every registered voter has their citizenship verified at registration.

Ballots are sent only to registered voters, and they come printed with the voter's information already on it. along with a scannable QR code and a part you tear-off (maybe triplicate?) as your "ticket stub".

Whereever you send them to, they are hand-scanned into an uneditable database that you can lookup online that shows your vote was received and who you voted for.

You've got Authorization and Authentication at registration, you've got Availability because everyone gets it and postage is pre-paid. You have Accountability and Non-repudiation with them being scanned in and able to be verified.

Sound good?
