I played it back when it came out, I was an RPG noob and was so intimidated by the game that I gave up after a few days. I tried it again a few years later and liked it but was still a noob and got distracted by other games at the time.

i picked up the remastered version for $16 and am already further into the game than Ive ever been lol (just rang the first bell)

I also thought this would be a good game to play alongside animal crossing (which I am currently playing the shit out of) since theyre like polar opposite games

I was replaying it again last year but I got frustrated at blight town, you fight through like 20 fucking enemies just to get toxined and that shit basically kills you no matter what. After killing like 4 of those fucking dart shooting toxin motherfuckers and getting toxined again, I said fuck it and took a break.

but it's a fun game though.

I didn't bother with the master key this time cause I was like "Fuck it, I know the way."

You could do it in either order if you have the Master Key. But if you don't have the master key, you have to get the Basement Key from the Undead Parish, so you would be in the Gargoyle's arena 'first'.

Master key is good even if you have the game down honestly. I pretty much always played with it.

DS 1 had far less firesrhines, and to me, not as many options on where you go at any one point. This made the master key...well key...because it opens it up a bit more.

DS 2 (both versions) had many options on which way you could go, and ways to improve yourself, and DS 3 was just plain easy for most of the game (but had a decent number of options as well along with a FREAKTON of shrines lol.

I bought the remastered but have not played it since then, I do need to give it a shot sometime. I have replayed 2 and 3 since getting the remastered but even with improved graphics, I found the movement in it clunky so switched to another game after only trying it a bit.

It should be noted, I played D21 on the playstation originally, I got the prepare to die version but it was honestly unplayable. I heard the remastered version was better (and it was) but I still don't think it's as good as the PS version (which I got rid of sadly). I either have to get used to the PC remastered version, or never play DS1 again basically (2 and 3 I have on PC and work fine).

Take solace in knowing the toxic dart blowers are some of the few non-respawning enemies in the game.

The toxin dart guys made me very glad my first character was a Brigand and therefore had the Spider Shield to rely on.

I am also playing Dark Souls (3) and Animal Crossing at the same time, and the contrast is indeed pretty entertaining. I'm periodically finding myself dodging instead of picking up items, though, because B and A are in opposite places on the Switch and 360 controllers. It's not as bad as when I tried to play MH3U and the first Dark Souls at the same time (B is dodge in both games and that didn't go well at all), but it still requires me to think from time to time.

The first Dark Souls in particular has quite a few parts that are just awfully designed, as much as the rest of the game is brilliant. The Capra Demon fight is one that basically boils down entirely to whether or not you can kill the dogs before engaging him, since the arena is way too tiny to take all three of them head-on. Once they're dead, the demon himself isn't too bad, which is rather annoying because they basically said "this boss is too easy on his own so let's give him some adds to disguise that."

it wasnt even the dogs, it was being able to evade his initial swing and run up the stairs.

You could do the unofficial tagline and git gud.

You absolutely can take them all on head on but you have to place yourself well. You can't just roll blindly and you need to keep track of everybody. Capra is ultimately not that fast so you can always find some space but if you just rush to roll past him, obviously you'll get caught by a dog jump. You roll lock-on dogs, you bait capra swings to slow him.

I mean thats the great thing about this game, you could do many areas at this point. You could go fight stuff in the forest or if you have some transient curse you could loot the new londo ruins, then near the first area theres a tomb filled with skeletons and necromancers.

no, the icon looks like a ghastly hand:
https://darksouls.wiki.fextralife.com/Transient+Curse

You should have got at least one by now.

They enable you to hit the ghosts.

If you havent picked up one theres a pickup for one near the beginning of the area, and once you get rolling the drop rate is pretty high so you can keep up the status. Watch out for ambushes.

just checked, I have a few.

unrelated question: did the original 360 version require an XBL membership for every single online feature of the game like the PS4 requires PS+ to even see player created messages on the ground. I dont play ps4 games online so I almost never have PS+

Worst part is the framerate and I have no idea if the newer versions fixed that

Master Key is such a boring way to skip things. Even without it, you can take inventive paths through Darkroot and bypass places like the dreaded upper Blighttown area. If you're particularly crazy, you can even run through New Londo, kill the red guy for his Key to the Seal, and use it to open up the gates to the Valley of Drakes, allowing you to skip the Taurus Demon without the Master Key.
