Bad End Syndrome
Bitbop
Rapal

The first 5 seconds of BES is such a sweet happy piano melody. Then soon after vocals start but Alice Schach proves to once again be some of the more enjoyable vocals to be listening to. Maybe it's the fictional language. Which ever language this is beats the Nier one for me. Though the upbeat nature of the song certainly helps too. But also especially many of the little minor key change stuff that goes on like around :32, pretty good stuff. Other vocal song has little for me to enjoy.

Kinda same with the next vocal song over in the next match, though some thing about it's tone is more enjoyable than shadowbringers shadow bring ers. Something like how it feels less "standard" and more distinct or so for here. The part at 1:59 sounds like it has the potential to lead into the sort of toned section I would like but just kind of, doesn't go the full distance. Doesn't really matter, it's up against the one song I managed to bring to the contest, time to see how useful I was. The song has me in the title wow what a coincidence. Bitbop is a really great song with a bunch of digital mechanical fun silliness. In some weird way it feels weird trying to write up for this song because most other songs here are kind of like discoveries to me but this one I brought to the table instead and have listened to a bunch going in which for some reason makes my creative writing not flow. That and I'm really not particularly in much of a mood for write ups but this day is one that would be a good one for write ups. Song just keeps up the mechanical fun all the way through in a variety of different methods and tunes and they're all great stuff for me, definitely a top song of the bracket for me

Toc match is annoying in a way because daddu mulk is more of the medium of music I prefer being "Sega CD" synthish stuff but the actual tune is like, okay at best, kind of uninspiring whereas Rapal is the realistic instruments and especially screechy high strings that I do not prefer but it's tune is much nicer and gives a very nice output, good sound scape. A variety of different sections that work out very well and sound quite nice. Like those at 2:00 and 2:15. Good key changes. What does the other song have again? robo vocals saying a few words words a lot of times one of which is "Daddy." well I assume at least, I'm never any good at understanding vocals. Nah some parts of the song are ok but really , I feel like this song sort of let me down kinda there that's my write up EDIT: whoops I wasn't done proofreading because I said this was close initially but in actuality it really wasn't

Bad End Syndrome
Saudade

Hell yeah Alice Schach. Glad to see more of them here. Shadowbringers ain't nearly as good as the last Shadowbringers track we had. It does have some good parts, like the part at the halfway mark and the part at 5:37 or so, but mostly it's not a thing I'm interested in.

Saudade pretty fun for a vocal track in this style. Bitbop has some stuff I like too, and it's probably a more me type of song, but I just feel Saudade more for whatever reason.

Daddy Mulk one of the worst retirees. Rapal not necessarily one of the best, but definitely a good one.

Rapal is one of the VGMC9 retirees I remember least - it's pretty dece. good instruments if not super memorable melodically, sort of like LdM except with violin instead of guitar

Shadowbringers
Saudade
Rapal

Someone remind me to nom Mili stuff next year.

intro is cool, then we get low chanting over some classic guitar rifts I always associate with California I blame the hotel therein. It's really cool. Then the guitars double down and I'm not sure if I appreciate that where are we going. while we figure that out, hey it's another counting song isn't it strange. 3 minute mark is weird i don't know how I feel about this. I think it feels flat in a way, like I kind of expect songs to go up and down but it stays at the same height for so long it's weird OH HEY where'd this violin come from ? This is a nice changeup. I don't like how it sounds double with the guitar though. anyways OOH WHAT ARE THESE LAST THIRTY SECONDS WHERE DID THEY COME FROM! I didn't realize the song was capable of that!

aya wong looks weird i don't feel like she is one wrong word away from kicking my ass. Anyways I feel like I could hear this song on the radio. Which isn't a complaint! The chorus is really cool too, the lyrics are neat but I'm not sure it fits RE2, but I've also never played RE2 so I am 0% qualified to make that statement.

okay these ramp ups to full stop are really cool this sounds very MYCROSTIC and then it becomes jazz? no stop go back I liked you more for those first 10 seconds. Man this track keeps bouncing back between things I like and things I don't non-stop it is impressive. The sheer variety is also impressive. I'm not sure what this track's purpose was, probably rhythm but.

puppy do what puppy do what(what was the name of the track in that weird cross channel game where you bounced the guy for miles and miles? had the same melody. always kind of liked it more I digress).

Rapal's violin is beautiful. Also this mixing isn't the mixing I remember from the past, everything feels weighted wrong I don't like it LET ME BE OLD AND WEAR MY NOSTALGIA GOGGLES IN PEACE. like i understand how the violin is clearer and that's why you're using it, but the drums feel overbearing. it's like watching a movie in 60fps you don't know why it's wrong but it very definitely is.

Bad End Syndrome (152nd) vs Shadowbringers (183rd)
Saudade (189th) vs Bitbop (141st)
Daddy Mulk [52nd] vs Rapal [16th]

wow i am not particularly excited about this four pack lol. two of them (the ones i'm voting against) are just not my kind of song at all and don't really do anything that interests me. can't say they're bad but just not my thing. the two i am are so close to being my kind of thing but fall soooo short and it makes me kinda sad!! :( but i'll still talk about what i do like about them!!

okay I'll just start with Saudade since it's "the bottom "(third last in contest"" r:esident :evil yeah idk this kind of slow kinda emotional kinda just POWER male vocals song is hard to really do anything for me. Gotta say though, the vocalist is much better than others that I've heard sing songs exactly like this. when it goes all quiet at 2:35 is actually pretty cool but lasts for like ten seconds. Shadowbringers hits the same way except it FAKES ME OUT with a cool female opera vocal intro that makes me all INTRIGUED and then nope it farts out a rock song at me and hits my face and i get pushed over into the canyon. there ARE things I can pick out here and there that I like after the intro, I really like the static filtered vocalizing that is pretty characteristic of FF14 music but that's not exactly a unique thing. I LOVE FF3 - Eternal Wind but it feels so hamfisted into this song and i'm like WHYYYY WHY MAKE ROCK ETERNAL WIND AAAAAAAAAA okay "song" i will give you credit for eternal wind but it is not enough. this song is still a 6.5/10 btw in the last 10 songs of the contest lmfao oops i like this field TOO much

okay Bad End Syndrome leaves a Bad End Taste in my mouth after Chocolate Missile did not really impress me last year and romped all over some of my favorite songs (oops spoilers for ToC I guess hahaha oops) but I actually like this significantly more I think. It might be the heavy focus on the very realistic Nostalgia's keysound-piano which I love how apparent it is over songs in this game lol also the construction of the conlang sounds very cool with very staccato cut off consonants that is always very cool. the melody itself is just so unmemorable to me though, like they knew if was gonna get drowned out by the keysounds anyway so it kinda just fumbles around to make a song. it's kinda offputting but I still think it sounds pretty alright! I actually think I super underrated Bitbop... I actually really like when "fauxtro" sounds takes kinda a backseat while still being there, a lot of songs take it a bit too far but this is a good balance. I think most of my problems also comes with it being pretty unmemorable besides like the intro, like it goes in too many places for me. Yeah okay I think I lied I actually love this song lol I've heard this like a ton by this point why am I having this realization now wtf. ending is SUPER COOL i knew that already that's not a surprising new thing but i'll say it anyway cause IT IS SUPPER COOL. Dinner. gAMEBopAdv

Daddy Mulk is my least favorite retiree in the past four contests!! Wow!! The original Daddy Mulk would be like... Top 10 of this field easily. The vocals are way too robotic and quiet and just generally have unintelligible timbre that make it hard to be anything that just "noise" which is very very sad because that's one of the best parts of the original!! The arrangement itself is pretty good throughout the whole thing at least! There's a lot of parts that are just missing too, but I can't dock it that much for things that I know are "supposed to be there" but aren't. i want there to be cheering so bad at 2:25 and instead it just ends :(((((( i need to STOP THINKING ABOUT ARCADE and listen to song.g.... man in a vaccum this song is just missing a lot of that extra charm and is kinda plain. Just hurts more when you open the vaccum and look at the original as well. Rapal is VERY good!! I LOVE that intro piano ostinato and it continuing on through the song, it adds a cool extra beat to the song that just makes it so uplifting to listen to like I'm on a train in the sunlight going to the destination!! 2:00 is also such a cool part wow this song is just so cool... Definitely wish I could've been there for this song's run instead of Laguerra lolol oops sorry war ofthe worlds

Nostalgia Op.2 - Bad End Syndrome
Blade Ballet - Bitbop
The Ninja Warriors (Sega CD) - Daddy Mulk

Match 1: BES is another short rhythm game song (I don't know if this is actually from a rhythm game, but I'm assuming it is) with that same vocalist whose works have appeared elsewhere in VGMC and these are all good, this is good too. Shadowbringers tries very hard to sound powerful but just ends up sounding flat, and I have that same issue with a lot of FFXIV music.

Match 2: Saudade isn't my kind of music but I guess it's not really bad or anything. No writeup for Bitbop because RANKING SPOILERS

ToC: I really want to talk about Daddy Mulk, but RANKING SPOILERS!! Rapal is pretty good too I guess.

Bad End Syndrome
Bitbop
Rapal

Bad End Syndrome is my 61st favorite in the contest! fun fluttery piano that starts as a feeling of constant even spaced 16ths but actually is NOT all even spaced and reveals that more as it goes and slowly transitions to something more organic and alive. the LOW piano note sharply panning between the speakers back and forth at :45 is one of my favorite sound design things in existence. {Alice Schach and the Magic Orchestra/Yuni Minami/Nene Akagawa} seems to have a thing for the sorts of progressions that tickle me, i'd say this isn't as interesting in that regard as Chocolate Missile was, but it's certainly full of that winding alternating major/minor all over the place and changing what scale's being used every 2 seconds stuff I crave! I also like both this and chocolate missile lay in this neat in-between zone between subtle predictability/subtle unpredictability, i never know quite what's coming next, but if I do, I wasn't expecting to know, i can't predict whether or not i will be able to predict the chord after the next chord... a very specific zone that i can't name much else of the top of my head that sits there. but i like it. Oh actually I guess that's what nier is lol. this stuff is much more playful than that though

Shadowbringers is my 157th favorite in the contest! mmm the distorted quality compressed EDGY voice is good. this is like what I /wanted/ Saudade's vibe to be, kinda (this writeup doesn't make sense if reading linearly because I wrote this block of text after writing the block of text for Saudade oops). on the lower end of ffxiv songs i've heard, but i mean ffxiv is far too eclectic an ost for me to expect anything specific out of it haha. i don't mind this at all, it's a nice zone between shadow the hedgehog edgy guitar music with gruff low monotone voice and some orchestral/choral dramatic thing. i don't really care for this track's actual composition, doesn't actually engage me emotionally in any way, but I LOVE the "vibe" whatever the FUSE that means. I wish this style/instrumentation were applied to something that was more my thing in terms of the NOTES that were in the song. idk some Hamauzu/Mizuta/Suzuki song in this style or something "oh wait that's ff13-2 limit break"

game BOP

||||||||||||||||||||||

Saudade is my 186th favorite in the contest! i expected i would love this when i first heard it, i like "edgy" and gritty and this is THE KIND OF music where I actively like electric guitar. and that is true here! I like those things! this has some interesting chord changes, i like when music has "interesting chord changes" by whatever personal definition i have of that, obviously. I tend to like shuffle feel when it's applied to 'dark' music, esp if it has vocals in..well, a few styles, but this is one of the styles i like applied to this kinda music. i should be all over this thing. oh of course this guy worked on dmc5 lol. yeah WHY DONT I LIKE THIS? I DONT KNOW?! I don't get it. every time i hear this song i just get really annoyed at it and I think it actually has to do with an exact reason i said i expect to like it, the shuffle feel rhythm is REALLY heavy-handed in a way that kills it for me. It feels like a broken slinky tumbling down the stairs. It isn't subtle enough about its "accenting the 1st and 3rd triplet beats only" feel. It's mechanical, when it should be smooth. This isn't really a criticism, this isn't like a "bad" way for it to be, but I think that's what bothers me. I can't take it seriously because it feels like the michelin man is stumbling through a swamp to this song, it doesnt feel edgy, i don't get that cool 'woa dark shuffle-feel edgy gritty song'54"042o-12 bad ass feeling, because its too plodding. every step it makes is heavy and unintentionally "silly" to me, when this should feel organic and foreboding

Bitbop is my 22nd favorite in the contest! this is a very stereotypically 'me' song to the point that i have heard people refer to this song as "mycro" more than just a few times. they're not wrong. blunt groups of 5 16th notes in your face, rhythmic playfulness, smooth alternating between organic swing/shuffle feel and mechanical computer 5/16. this is honestly some of my FAVORITE shuffle/swing feeling stuff i can think of lol, the opposite of my reaction to saudade. the deconstruction of the free bouncy layers against the mathematical precision, or even the "plodding" march-y parts this has in the same song ("plodding march-y parts" that i actually love, despite "plodding" being one of my most overused adjectives to describe something i dislike in a song). it's so many ways to feel the same exact ideas all presented to you in the same track, sometimes multiple ways of feeling it at once! Sometimes it feels like there's a smooth, barely noticeable transition between the ultra mechanical constant 16ths and ultra bouncy swung stuff. On top of ALL of that I think the sound design is extremely cool, epiano's a sound i like, synth sweeping chords are amazing (and the kinds of thick harmonies that i like). This is quirky, goofy, and I like this kinda quirky/goofy when it's on instrumentation like this. This reminds me A LOT of SHNABUBULA who is one of my favorite musicians of all time!!!!! If i had more time today I would do a huge writeup actually analyzing every subtly (and overtly) twisted rhythm thing this does and picking out what all the cool chords are. The rhythms & harmonies here are wonderful and exactly what I want to hear, I will at least say that!

game BOP

||||||||||||||||||||||

Daddy Mulk is my 49th favorite ToC entrant! this song is not representative of what I like about Hisayoshi Ogura. i notice he tends to be very simple and short in the melodic line, even in the stuff of his I love, and that's to its benefit for me throughout his stuff in the Darius series (contains a huge amount of my favorite vgm), but in something as unsubtle as this it winds up coming across as underwhelming and condescending in its straightforwardness. Can't stand the synth solo from 1:54 - 2:25, i think maybe because it uses up all of the content of the scale its in too fast to have any impact after 2 seconds in, there's ways to handle a pretty much pentatonic solo that doesn't immediately turn into a tedious failed display of expression of intensity through shallow speed that is not even that fast. Orch hits are one of the few "stereotypical 90s synths/samples" that i don't love, but outside of that I love the rest of the instrumentation! I LOVE the fake piano at 2:25 on the other hand. PUPPY PUP

Rapal is my 36th favorite ToC entrant! I've never really been completely blown away by any tracks from this game, it's all just stuff that makes me go &quo

Bad End Syndrome
Saudade
Daddy Mulk

Wow, Bad End Syndrome is pretty good! I'm surprised, just based on the title. Is this some sort of parody of VNs or something? That's just such a strange title. This has the earmarks of an early favorite to get retired.

And it's up against...Final Fantasy doing Final Fantasy things. For about a minute and then it turns into Final Fantasy doing Shadow the Hedgehog things, because why not?

...Bon Jovi, is that you? This is seriously crazy; I could totally hear this song actually on the radio.

Bitbop is...kind of retraux. Like I can tell by the soundfont that it's from a recent system, but it still sounds like a Sega Genesis song. It's kind of cool I guess?

Speaking of old-school Sega, hi Daddy Mulk! This is a really fun song.

And while I was kind of expecting another vocal song, Rapal's pretty good too.

Saudade > Daddy Mulk > Rapal > Bad End Syndrome > Bitbop > Shadowbringers

Strong day all around. It kind of has to be when I equate a song with Shadow and then rank it last; "Spirit Tsunami" did, after all, start out life as Shadow knockoff "Spirit the Hedgehog" before the plots started getting bizarre enough that he ended up with a more humanoid form. It's kind of a shame that this was the account I ended up locking in on as my main, since I've pretty much unified the rest of my online presence under the Cyberchao X banner (oh, look, it's still a Sonic Adventure 2 reference).

Today's a very good day. The first match is of particular note. Bad End Syndrome is a great song, and I like it quite a bit -- but it's up against the only song in this bracket I'd bother to do a lyrical analysis for, and in fact, did. Shadowbringers isn't just buttrock or anime guitar or whatever its detractors want to call it. It's abso-fuckin'-lutely amazing lyrical storytelling, weaving together six whole years of narrative into a package that elevates the scene it's in to something transcendent. If you have a bit of time to kill and are curious about why I'm so high on it, please give this a read. It's my meager attempt to convey why, exactly, this theme is such a gamechanger for me, and so many others: https://old.reddit.com/r/ffxiv/comments/f5mwww/this_is_your_story_a_lyrical_analysis_of_the/

(For example, banshiryuu asked 'why make a rock version of Eternal Wind' and that's covered! It's a long read, but consider it my version of the megaposts others make, targeted specifically at one song that deserved it.)

Nostalgia Op.2 - Bad End Syndrome at 8.4 is my ???th favorite song in the contest!! pop'n vibes. Doesn't do as much as I might hope it would but that chorus in the middle is pretty good and I like the aesthetic.

Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers - Shadowbringers at 8.5 is my ???th favorite song in the contest!! FINISH THE CYCLE OF ETERNAL RETURN! Wowee now i know how to count in English! I like the guitar. The guy in the video looks goofy. Like Giliath Osborne going through an emo phase in his midlife crisis.

Resident Evil 2 - Saudade at 8.3 is my ???th favorite song in the contest!! Opening always makes me think it's gong to be a song that's in Rebel Galaxy. You don't get many songs like this in VGMC. I'm glad it's here. It's pretty good, just not the most unique song.

Blade Ballet - Bitbop at 8.6 is my ???th favorite song in the contest!! This is definitely a bit bop.

The Ninja Warriors (Sega CD) - Daddy Mulk at 8.4 is my ???th favorite retiree in the contest!! I'm gonna be honest, I never really got the appeal of this song. It's good, just not seeing the reason people are so in love with it. I guess the breakdown 3 minutes in is pretty cool.

Granado Espada - Rapal at is my ???th favorite song in the contest!! Granado Espada, my child. I love you. You are definitely not my favorite one that's gotten into a contest however, probably only above Ni Miedo. Still puts it above most other retirees. VGMC 9 did something right for once.
This thumbnail is excellent. It's almost as good as Windows Production. The guy looks like he's trying so hard not to look at the girl's boobs.

Bad End Syndrome (8.5) / Shadowbringers (7.5)
Saudade (4.5) / Bitbop (8.0)

EDIT:

Hell yeah Alice Schach.

Awesome to hear Eternal Wind, my favorite track from any NES Final Fantasy, get remixed into this (Shadowbringers). Bitbop made me laugh at the end. Hearing Daddy Mulk wasn't as painful this time as in the past. No comment on Rapal, for obvious reasons.
