Job or no job?

Few posts on here about UBI etc, and it has me wondering. Would you all not work if UBI was a thing (Universal basic income),
and you could live comfortably without working?

I would be bored. I'm older now and can't really do many jobs, but at least before all this I still volunteered etc, and I'm actively
looking for some kind of nanny position etc for after this is over.

So what about you? This is probably a good time to ask since many people are stuck at home and can see what it would be like.
Honestly I would be amazed if even 20% of the population didn't want to work at all.

Exactly!! I like to be doing something that makes a difference, be needed etc. Work isn't just about the money, it's about a sense of purpose, of accomplishment each day, and a reason to get up in the morning. You can entertain yourself, but eventually it starts to seem like your just passing the time until you die. A good job gives your life meaning (along with many other important factors as well).

I mean I'm disabled and can't work so nothing would change for me tbh.

I'd kind of like to have a job I can actually do available though, tbh.

None of the options quite fit. I teach classes in university extension that are interesting to me. I help out at the auto shop next door on interesting problems. I do financial management and basic nursing care for a blind neighbor. I like doing things that seem worth doing. Wurk with a Capital "URK", nah. Helping out, doing good, getting paid for some of it, sure. Right now, not really working from home while the university campus is closed, but getting a small stipend for course planning for the Fall semester.

Assuming I was relieved of the financial aspects of not needing to work, no. I'd get bored, quick. I've been working from home for the past month and a half or so and I'm bored as heck. I don't game as much as I used to and I'm getting bored of just watching whatever on Netflix/Disney+/Prime Video. I've read all of the books I have. I'd love to go fishing, boating, or hiking but it's hard to do that during a shelter-in-place pandemic.

I'm fine wasting the winter months playing games but do need something else to keep that from growing stale. Being inactive for too long isn't a good thing.

Yeah, it doesn't hhve to fit your current situation, it's more of a "Would you work if you didn't have to" sort of question.

I think the idea sounds alot greater than the reality would be, unless you had a ton of money and could like explore the world or something.

Absolutely. I work only out of necessity. I see all the people talking about being stir crazy having to stay home meanwhile im over here being envious they get to.

Was able to stay at home a couple years after graduation without needing to work or go to school and i miss it so much.

To spite the system, maybe. It's bad enough how many people are getting a free ride using my hard-earned money. Lot of people on this board ought to be sending me thank you notes.

Of course, if I did ever just have a lot of free time like that, I'd probably write a book or do something else that winds up making a good amount of money and it would still get siphoned away to pay peoples' benefits. It's very hard not to make money. Case-in-point, a few years ago I helped a friend make a repair to his home and his neighbor wanted to hire me to fix some stuff around his house. Pretty good money, too, for what it was. If I didn't live in a far-left shithole state, I probably would just gone ahead and done it.

Not in this state, unless I was receiving extra shit on top of it. CT is fucking expensive.

Interesting numbers so almost 2x as many people would not work if they didn't have to.I wonder if many of the people who voted that way are younger?

I think as you get older you both A: "hopefully" get better jobs and B: Start appreciating that you have a job more lol.

So many retired people really miss working once they stop, some even die shortly afterwards.

Jobs can give your life meaning when nothing else is.

I have volunteered when I could not work, even though I don't get paid, because I want to make a difference. I find existence without a purpose just passing the time. You can do it, you can find ways to entertain yourself etc, but it makes way more sense to actually make the world a better place if you can.

I wish everyone could have a meaningful and rewarding job, I bet way more people would vote to keep working if they actually had one. I think it is horribly sad that so many people dislike their jobs and some even hate them, but feel like they have no other choice.

I have so many hobbies that I don't actually get to do as much as I want, so being able to focus on them would be great. However, I am a firm believer of working for the things I have so I would have had to earn the right to stay home and focusing on my hobbies. Getting handed it without having to put in the effort would ruin it for me unless I was getting paid for my hobbies.

It would be more productive to let somebody who needs the job to work it instead. If you don't need the money is what I mean.

Wow, a vast majority would either only work if they liked the job, or basically are pro slavery as long as they are not the slave.

I did not expect that.
