Inviso 05/29/20 8:10:30 AM #456:	The problem with the whole "don't resist arrest and you'll be fine" mentality is that there's no real definition of what consistutes "resisting", nor is there an across-the-board guideline for the amount of force needed to subdue a resisting suspect (or for how long, in the case of this most recent killing). The police are essentially granted carte blanche with how they react in any situation, and there is at least a pattern of unarmed black men being viewed as inherently more threatening, and thus regarded with greater, often deadly force. I mean, since we're talking about Minnesota, let's remember Philando Castile. He was pulled over, not under any sort of arrest, and he was shot seven times in the driver's seat of his vehicle, in front of his girlfriend and her daughter. He was a licensed gun owner and informed the officer of this, presumably because he was afraid that, when he went to reach for his registration, the sight of a gun would frighten the officer into shooting him. Then, after a RAPID exchange in which the officer pulled his gun and barked several orders, Philando Castile was shot. The officer, after the fact, claimed he feared for his life because he smelled marijuana and thought that Philando's decision to risk his girlfriend's daughter's lungs with second-hand smoke made him a threat. This is part of the problem. The police are always given the benefit of the doubt. You can justify almost anything under the broad umbrellas of "resisting arrest" and "I feared for my life". While this new case is going on, there's that second case that happened in Louisville. Police allegedly executed a no-knock search warrant on the apartment of someone completely unrelated to the criminal they had already caught earlier in the day. Kenneth Walker, believing an intruder was breaking into his home, fired upon the intruders with his legally-licensed firearm. The police shot back and killed Kenneth's girlfriend. The only person arrested at that scene...was Kenneth Walker. Admittedly, the situation is murkier because the "we knocked"/"they didn't knock" argument, but that's not gonna bring Breonna Taylor back. And even if the police DID knock...no knock search warrants ARE a thing...and what's stopping them from playing out in this EXACT same way? It just feels like the police are granted far too much leeway in how they act, and black citizens are treated in a harsher, perhaps more fearful manner than their white counterparts.
