my first thought was the "plot twist" sort of reveal, so: in Ever17, the reveal of the kid's real face. I was barely in high school then and it really opened my eyes to the kind of storytelling you could only do in a game

honourable mention to the big twist in Zero Time Dilemma which caused me to have a real freak out as I was sleep-deprived and on the verge of heat stroke. coincidentally both of those games had the same writer

I mean, literally everyone saw a FF7 remake coming, just not at that specific time! But Snake was actually completely out of left field.

the crazy thing about the Snake reveal is that we didn't even catch it in real time

it was a behind closed doors reveal and then news started to leak out and nobody was sure whether it was real or not because it was SOLID SNAKE IN BRAWL

I was thinking about this earlier, and I believe that the four most hyped games of all time are Twilight Princess, Brawl, MGS4, and Halo 3. No coincidence they were all released in the same time period. That was back when sharing gaming news through the internet was kicking into high gear, and when gamers as a whole were young enough to overreact to everything. Hype for those games self-perpetuated and reached absurd levels because we'd never seen anything like it before and didn't have the context of hype of that level not living up to expectations. The newer young generation of gamers still have that bushy-eyed level of excitement for the world but they also have many more examples of hype backlash to use as cautionary tales, as well as old fogey gamers telling them to cool their jets. We didn't have any of that.

Isn't GTA5 the most hyped game of all time? It was huge in the casual fanbase.
