Like if a Firebending nationality avatar has kids with a non-bender, can the kids get any bending, or just firebending?

Yes, if you paid attention, it's mentioned that each avatar comes from a different bending clan every cycle.

Aang and Katara had a water bender, an Airbender, and a nonbender (until bullshit happened), so I dont think genetics is downplayed just because one of the parents has a magic tapeworm in their body.

Cool, didn't know Aaang and Katara eventually got together, that rocks. I figured Aang died since they end ATLAB after 3 seasons and then have one with just Katara (haven't gotten that far).

Since the benders come from a different nation each time, they all have a natural bending power. I believe the children will be born with that bending power, if they have any. If the parents are both benders, but bend different elements, I believe the child will get one of them... Maybe at random...
