I wonder if, given the lack of an 'obvious' winner, they end up giving it to Animal Crossing for having probably the most profound effect on the wider gaming community in the year of the lockdown, and sign it off as a feelgood story.

TLOU2 is the 'obvious' winner imo, but Hades is the best reviewed game of the year and Animal Crossing sold the most and has its unique feel-good factor as you say. I think it's pretty open this year!

Nice to see Among Us get a nom even though it came out in 2018, it would be wrong for it to go unmentioned with how prominent it's been this year.

Most well-reviewed games managed to sneak in somewhere- Flight Sim, 13 Sentinels, F1, Crusader Kings, Dreams, P5 Royal, Yakuza.

Notable snubs (0 noms): Demon's Souls, Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition, Florence, Astro's Playroom.

I really don't know what the rules are for games released a while back, the site doesn't have clear rules for it (though it does say early access games can qualify).

I haven't played it (or pretty much anything else this year!) but I think the nomination itself is the achievement for 13 Sentinels, it's the only nom for the game and the others are all big contenders in many categories. Would be cool to see an upset though!

At a glance I think the nomination totals for the GOTY contenders are:

That is really, really impressive for Hades, there's often a single indie nom for GOTY but I'm pretty sure they've never come close to breaking through like that. It's definitely the underdog feel-good 'can a small game outside the usual parameters beat the behemoths' pick, much like Parasite at the Oscars this year! FF7 falls behind the pack a bit with no performance noms but otherwise the top 4 are all pretty viable here. I wouldn't rule out AC either for aforementioned reasons. Man I hope it's not a boring TLOUII sweep.

My GOTY nominee predictions were nearly spot on. I predicted that the six nominees would be among those six and Half-Life: Alyx. Shame Half-Life: Alyx didn't get nominated, but I guess it shows you how niche VR really is. At least it got nominated for Game Direction.

I've played three of those games, and one of them was No Man's Sky which I haven't touched since launch.

I'm guessing TLoU2 gets GOTY as well as accessibility. Journalists love shit like that, especially when a bunch of people hated it. They're not much different than movie critics in that respect.

I was already planning on getting Hades. These definitely make me curious about Spiritfarer, 13 Sentinels and If Found

Bugsnax not getting nominated for anything is a travesty. Miles Morales not getting nominated is... just weird? Like I don't understand.

Dreams likely should've gotten some stuff

Animal Crossing seems significantly lower quality than the other GOTY nominees. Is it just because it was popular? It didn't really do much that hasn't been done by every other AC game aside from slight terraforming. Feels like if Pokemon Sword/Shield would've gotten nominated last year, but somehow even less impressive.

Last of Us II gathering tons of nominations is excellent but is gonna piss off a LOT of incels

there is an easy mode for Hades that gives you +2% damage resistance every time you die, it does not withhold content having this on

after dying like 30 times you are nigh invincible and can start clearing the game even if you are bad

i know this cuz i did it cuz i am zen "bad at videos game" thunder
