As always, poll options are based on reviews (and games having enough reviews) so dont get mad at me, no rereleases (yes, including Demons Souls and Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition), early access on a case by case basis. Cyberpunk fell off the list (even the PC version) and I thought about removing one of the two PC sims for it, but honestly they deserve to be on here and Cyberpunk probably deserves to drop off for its review shenanigans. I left this topic much later than usual precisely for Cyberpunk and everything!

I'll say this: 13 Sentinels got much closer to the cutoff than I thought it would (though it would have had to go through Spelunky 2 and Spiritfarer, both worthy entries)! I'm excited to get to that one if only because I heard the story was good.

Like I said, early access games addressed on a case by case basis! Haha, a loophole!

To be completely honest, I probably wouldnt have allowed Hades if it A) hadnt only launched as a complete game on Switch, and B) wasnt the best reviewed game of the year winning a bunch of awards. Its hard to judge when an early access game should be counted.

But man, imagine if I pushed off FFVIIR for Dreams, I would never hear the end of it. I didnt have FFXV on here in 2016 (a decision I completely stand by) and got so much complaining when that game wasnt even close to the line. At least FFVIIR deserves to be on the list!

It's not like Dreams was reviewed in 2019! Lol I know FF7 is the obvious GOTY around here, it's just funny that it's technically 19th on the Opencritic 2020 rankings and you made it move all the way up to 9th to fit it in here. If F1 2020 had scored a tiny bit better I wonder how you would've justified excluding that!

Of the choices given, Hades. My ranking topic put it at #3 behind an older game and Genshin Impact (which is not a game for everyone due to the gacha elements.)

It's 7 remake and it's not particularly close for me. I can't think of a more hyped game that delivers as well as it does. Amazing battle system, graphics and music. Questionable story/ending but let's see how it develops before we crap on it.

Persona 5 Royal comes second. The QOL improvements and added dungeon/confidants are amazing. Maybe technically a better game than 7 remake, but I don't want to give GOTY to an updated version of a three-year old game..

Third place is Cold Steel IV for being the conclusion to a massively impressive feat of storytelling across a number of titles, even if it's technically worse than the ones that came before it (aka the Return of the King award).

Fourth is 13 sentinels, which I'm currently playing. I'm 31% story completion and I'm kind of wishing the story was just told in order. **** is so confusing. Good though! I guess if it was told in a semi-chronological fashion it would be boring but damn it makes my head hurt. I surprisingly like the battles too, though they seem pretty simple so far (44% completion on battles).

Fifth is Hades. I didn't like it enough to continue beating it to continue the story, but it was pretty fun.

It's kinda dumb how OpenCritic combines reviews for all consoles. Having the console and PC reviews for Cyberpunk together helps neither console players nor PC players. Metacritic does it way better here.

Agreed (though they do at least have a disclaimer for Cyberpunk), it's gonna be a problem with a lot of cross-gen stuff coming the next couple years too.

Legends of Runeterra only has 10 reviews, and Demons Souls is a 1:1 remake (odd that they allowed it but not Xenoblade, which has much more new content).

I greatly prefer how OpenCritic does it; it really bothers me how much variance there is between Metacritic listings for the same game, with Cyberpunk being one of the rare exceptions where there's a massive difference. Unless that issue exists, most of the difference on metacritic stems from an arbitrary divide when the reviews would likely be the same for any of the consoles.

Something in the middle would be nice, only splitting pages when it becomes apparent.

Yeah I wasn't meaning it to slight your poll, I was joking before! Just to give some context for people with different definitions who might consider those games as this year. It is weird what counts as a new game and what doesn't, the lines seem pretty blurred. They did have Demon's Souls off the list for a while when it came out then I guess decided to include it.

Cyberpunk, which was in the top 10 on release day, is now down to 94th with an 82 average (and dropping!). Wonder how low it will end up.

While I think I can say I had more active fun with Hades and P5R, my favorite game of the year is probably 13 Sentinels. I greatly enjoyed the unique storytelling.
