She said she wants to try making ASMR videos and become a YouTuber and I figured it's a harmless hobby for a teenage girl. A cool way for the kid to be creative. She needs a hobby anyway.

But her mother (my wife) pulled me aside after we finished with presents and is concerned that our daughter will be using the microphone to create auditory sex content... She said she looked through her phone and history and is pretty sure this is what she actually wants it for.

She seemed so excited when she opened it. It was definitely her "big" gift of the year. But now I'm concerned and want to take it back. I know there's no way I can do that without her hating for me years. And even though it was my wife's idea, I can't throw her under the bus. Her and my daughter already don't get along all that well and I don't want to fan the flames...

What would you do?

If she wants to make content like that she doesn't need a fancy microphone to do it, having one will just increase the quality. It also doesn't sound like a particularly dangerous thing to get into, provided she knows enough about the internet to maintain some level of privacy. I can understand why you and your wife would be worried about it, but there are probably alternative ways of mitigating the risks without taking the gift back.

ASMR can be sexual but it's fairly harmless overall.

Carve out her own little niche.

Also, she's not a teenager yet. She's 11.

I don't think my wife is looking at my phone but even if she was I trust her and I got nothing to hide. We look at our children's phones and online history to monitor their online activity as any responsible parent should.

If you are not the father, let the mother police how the step daughter uses it. Let her take the blame for it.

Okay, so your daughter is 11 and she wants to do ASMR vids, and so you get her...a binaural mic? Why? You don't even need those for ASMR. All you need is a decent condenser mic. It doesn't even have to be XLR. It can be just a USB mic like a Samson CO1U. It's less than $100 USD.

But the main focus seems to be on the motive of your daughter. If your wife has shown you evidence that proves beyond a reasonable doubt that your daughter has ulterior motives, then take the mic away and have a talk with her. Don't go into the talk in an accusatory manner. Address her with genuine concern, which you no doubt already have. Perhaps you do this with talks anyways, sorry if this seems patronizing.

But if your wife has only told you this, then demand evidence. Even if you trust her to have good intentions and tell you the truth, that doesn't mean you should always trust her judgement or perception. Perhaps you will interpret this evidence differently than she did.

Planting a camera, especially one she didn't know about, would be a huge violation of privacy imo. There's a difference between monitoring my kid's Internet activity and full-on spying on her. I took that suggestion for what it was though: a troll.

Anyway, my wife ended up having a long conversation about responsibility and decency with her. We reminded her that we do monitor Internet activity, so not to do anything appropriate. We're letting her keep the mic.
