Best trial in the whole series. And your train of thought is exactly where it should be at that point.

Jesus, Hangman's Gambit is becoming very clusterfucky.

Lol, even the game is saying it's too easy.

And in case it could be misunderstood, I am very much enjoying this case. The oppressiveness is wonderful and the feeling of foreboding to come is enticing as hell.

Trial break time. I guess now the "real" trial actually begins.

Oh, I see where this is going.

This is about Komaeda's promise from way back at the start of the game that they'd help anyone wanting to commit murder. Someone, possibly the traitor, came to him and said they wanted to kill him to escape.

Presumably by the logic of the game, the blackened is whoever was working with Komaeda and not Komaeda himself. Or maybe, it's whoever threw the cannisters with poison, even though they weren't the ones to fill them with that, or know what they were doing at the time. I can't remember who was the one to note that we take those fire grenades, but that has to be the person responsible. I was suspicious of Owari at the start of the case, but I figured they'd be too stupid for the setup. But if Komaeda did most of the thinking of how to set up the killing, then she'd totally be back on the suspect list.

This is great.

So I have no clue what's going on. Was it all a computer simulation? Did nobody die? Is Hajime the only real person there? So many questions.

Started chapter six. I'm on a ship having a convo with Komaeda and I'm labelled as ???, but my attitude is nothing like Hajime's. I sound more like Togami, honestly.

Oh wait, that was a flashback to before the game. And Komaeda has Junko's hand grafted to his arm? What.

Woah, whats happening, I'm back at the first game.

I hatched a pet that is a bipedal pig in a shitsuit. Eeeewwww.

Are we gonna see the main six from the first game? Seems like that's what's being hinted at. I did know for a fact that Kyoko was in the game, before I started, but I imagined it might be like as a flashback thingy.

What's the significance of there only being 5 remaining? It's very intriguing. I wonder if the killing is still being broadcast (assuming it ever was in the first game).

I wonder if there's a trial in the last chapter or if it's just exploration. Not sure what the trial would even be.

So the Reserve department was the "limbs" of Junko Enoshima. If Komaeda had her arm, does that mean he was the one in the reserve department? Maybe Hajime is actually the ultimate luckster.

Everything is bananas.

Is Junko actually alive? Is that what's happening here? Don't answer that. >_>

Starting the chapter 6 tri-- er, "Graduation".

I feel like I have a pretty good grasp of the truth based on the clues scattered about in chapter 6, though there are some holes and I'm not sure exactly how it fits together. Were the people at the isle all "remnants of the despair" being, er, re-educated I guess? What was Komaeda's specific role. Stuff like that. I still don't really have a clue who the "mastermind" could be, other than Saionji. Unless it really is just a faceless computer virus, which would be disappointing.

Not entirely sure if the people who died are actually dead or it was just a big computer simulation. I feel like the explanation of the graduation setup with the buttons would narratively indicate that everyone comes back at the end and votes "hope rules, fuck yeah".

Very excited to close down this story.

And I concur that case 5 of this game is the best in the franchise, so far at least.

Holy shit this is going bananas.

It's basically Kingdom Hearts writing, but... good?

Also a thought just came to me, DR2 has basically used the "absorb statement and use it as a bullet" gameplay element like... 3 times throughout the game.

Lol, as soon as I say that, there we go.

God damn I'm having feelings right now :(

Oh shit, the results screen. Ending achieved1

Whelp, credits rolling.

That was... great.

I liked the first game, and a number of things in this one I actually liked less so, but there's just something about it in its narrative skill and execution that is more so than the sum of its parts. One of the best games I've played in a long time. That ending was fantastic, really.

LMAO @ Togami still being with Toko

Are the characters supposed to look older in the ending? Togami looks like himself, but maybe Makoto and especially Kyoko look considerably older. It would make sense. Also, damn they look good in suits. Kind of sad we got no Asahina, though. But it makes sense that these three would be the ones most involved in the technical babble of the Future Foundation.

I still feel confused about Fatogami, though. Like I get he is the ultimate imposter. But is that of no further significance? Seems kind of needless as an addition if so. Might as well not have had him. The only thing his existence really does is make the rest of the group go "huh?" when they see SlimTogami in the old school files.

Also never found out who this Sato person is. Will that become a thing in DR3 or UDG?

Now that the game is over, Let's make a new character ranking to see how I currently feel about the characters compared to back when the game started.

Also a question. I was told that unless you get Komaeda's first FTE in the first free day of chapter 1, all his FTEs are locked for the game. If that's the case, what if you get that first one and then replay the game with that save file. Will the rest just always be available?

Anyway, ranking list:

01. Komaeda
02. Chiaki
03. Soda
04. Nekomaru
05. Kuzuryu
06. Saionji
07. Mahiru
08. Gundham
09. Ibuki
10. Owari
11. Tsumiki
12. Sonia
13. Peko
14. Fatogami
15. Teruteru

Gonna try out the extra content before moving on to Ultra Despair Girls. Very interested to see what that's all about. I assume not near as story heavy as the main games.

I dunno how I feel about Logic Dive as a game mechanic. On the one hand I don't hate the differentiated gameplay elements, and it doesn't happen enough to be annoying. But it also feels very immersion breaking and the thought breakthrough you get from it is way too simple to justify its length.

Logic Dive's control layout bothers me more than it should with PlayStation controls. Why is X button accelerate while O button is brake when O circle button fast forwards in literally every other context? Why do I have to make a claw hand just so I can jump while accelerating? So dumb.

Junko being the mastermind again bothers me a lot, mostly because I just hate Junko as a character. Causing the apocalypse because she was bored is such a boring motivation, and the one thing I did like about her character is that she left the possibility of being defeated because she wants to feel the despair of losing and dying. So why would she not only want to come back as an AI, but also brainwash every person in the world so they act like Junko? Wouldn't that get boring if literally every person was the same? I just don't get it, Junkoland is dumb and I hate it.

I'm pretty sure Byakubetes is more of a character in the anime? Haven't watched the anime yet so I dunno really.

As for Nagito's FTEs, well you wouldn't be able to do his post-crazy FTEs during Chapter 1 because he's not supposed to be acting crazy yet, and you can't hang out with him again until Chapter 3 because he's tied up during Chapter 2's Free Time Events (and you can't hang out with him during Chapter 5 because he's acting like a jilted lover over the whole remnants of despair+Hajime's a reserve course thing), so you'd have to wait for the appropriate Free Time Event slots regardless. The only real condition for finishing his FTEs is that you had to have done his first one.

Glad you liked it, it's really a damn good game.
I generally agree with your ranking, I'd probably put Gundham higher and Akane lower lol. I never expected to like Chiaki as much as I did (probably my #1), hence "FUCK case 5 even if it's not actually badly written" >_>

A lot of questions are answered in 3, as in the anime. Like who Sato is, how they became Ultimate Despair, etc.

And yeah, I feel like the point of Impostor was basically to make you go "What the fuck is going on?" He does get some more depth in his FTE and 3 though.

The R1 button is also accelerate. That's what I used. R1 accelerate, L1 jump, O brake.

Junko being the villain again doesn't really bother me. She's not deep, you're right, but I do think she's super fun for what she is. More so in this game than the first, really. It would have been good to have an original villain, sure, but considering the story revelations at the end, it made sense to me for the sake of continuity to have the same person.

Ultra Despair Girls has a very slow start and the gameplay feels rather clunky. Curious continuation. Fucking children, though.

I love how Hajime was completely weirded out by how out of character it was for him. It's like he was possessed by Teruteru's spirit or something.

What I don't love is how Ultra Despair Girls doesn't seem to have a quick-turn? Or if it does then I just haven't found it. Either way it really stresses me out not being able to quick-turn in a third-person shooter!

Emphasis on 'had', jeebus >_>. Assuming it's real and not just some sort of trick. I will assume real until other is indicated.

I guess we're gonna meet or hear about lots of family members of the main cast of either game. Like Kiyotaka's daddy.

Komaru is despairing over never seeing her family. Why doesn't she just tell her Makoto's alive?

Is there any way to use Toko without activating Genocide Jack?

Mark Guyver, lol.

Am I supposed to feel sorry for the kid cause he got beat up by his dad? Cause I... don't?

I got a C rank, c'mon, it was my first try, game.

I... think I'm liking the experience? The game got a lot better when the stretches of gameplay between cutscenes and tutorials increased in length. I don't really know what I feel about it. I don't play a lot of shooters. The constant bulletswapping is really annoying, even when quickswapping with the directional pad instead of bringing up the menu. I don't play a lot of shooters, so I dunno what I was expecting. The gameplay isn't amazing but I don't really think it's the kind of game you play for the gameplay. The visual design of the world kind of reminds me of Onechanbara Z2 Chaos. Interesting to see how things go from here.

I really wish the walking speed was faster than it is.

There's a reason why UDG is considered the darkest entry in the series, and some people skip it entirely because of its themes. I just watched a cutscene compilation on youtube because I just cared about the story, although it doesn't matter at all if you just wanted to go 1, 2, V3. It's optional, but interesting.

Look game, I told you a thousand times already, I'm not breaking that stupid controller!

I assume this is just about the end of chapter 5. Not sure if it's the last chapter or there's a sixth one after. Chapter 4 was hard to get through. There were sooooooo many cutscenes and only a small amount of actual gameplay.

I've had some thoughts about DR1 and 2 while playing this.

In DR1 to unveil the mastermind, one of the clues the team used was that in the bio lab there were only 9 lights active in the corpse freezers when there should have been 10, one for each person who died. But... why would Mondo's "corpse" need a freezer? I mean, I guess you could put it in there, but you wouldn't need to, so assuming there only being 9 lights is a big breakthrough seems... wrong?

In DR2 in the second case, Peko's logic confuses me. Assuming nobody, including Monokuma, would buy the silly tool logic, which is absolutely something she should have assumed, by trying to get away with it, she was putting Kuzuryu's life in danger, which seems like something she wouldn't want to do. I don't really think it was thought through very well.

Finished the game a couple of hours ago. I don't really have more to say about it I haven't already said. The gameplay is fine, even fun, but it screams that it was developed for a handheld with all the corner cutting. Gameplay wasn't really the reason to play it, though. The narrative was shocking and insane and sometimes insanely expositional. I think I loved it. I'm not sure I'll play it again. At times it was just fucking hard to stomach. Really interested if Monaca will play a role in DR3. Based on previous comments, I'm guessing not. Does the ending signify that Shirokuma and Kurokuma were being controlled by other people, or was it just their AIs communicating with each other? I really liked the character focus on Toko. She was much more enjoyable as such than I found her in the ensemble of the first game. Komaru was, like the game says over and over again, incredibly fucking boring. I'm assuming she won't be in the third game, and I'll say thank you if true. Can someone please just fucking murder Haiji? I have so much hate.

I understand, but they should have allowed for the possibility that Monokuma wouldn't accept their interpretation, and thereby causing Kuzuryu's death if they got away with it.

Ooooh, the new characters. They look a lot less anime than DR2, which I approve of. One of them is even wearing a mask to keep Covid in check!

Basically a lot of stuff brought up 1&2 are resolved in anime 3, so V3 does not bother delving into them much. You can still technically understand V3 on its own if you anticipate stuff being skipped, but you're probably not getting all the answers for 1&2 you might be expecting. Reeeeeally trying to avoid spoilers here...

I'm just not interesting in branching out into other mediums to enjoy games I play. It's not about anime, I wouldn't be interested if it was a Netflix live action series either. At most I could probably be pursueded to watch a 90 minute companion film. Not watch a 24 episode tv series.

Seems like the game uses a lot of the systems from the second game, but puts them in the school setting of the first game. I looked at the skills you can purchase. There seems to be a lot more trial elements than even in the second game, and they revamped Hangman's Gambit again, lol. Skills seem a lot more expensive than in the second games, I wonder if there's another way to get hope fragments than completing report cards.

I fear that this Monokuma team will become very annoying with their "Rise and Shine Ursine" greeting.

I'm gonna guess this dude isn't actually a robot.

So I completed the prologue. Felt tired last night so I stopped in the middle of the character introductions. Some thoughts.

Monokuma's voice actress change is really jarring and sadly just not as good. Flat out.

I'm fairly certain I'm just gonna flat out hate the Monokubs. They annoy me so much already.

I'm not sure how I feel about the investigation mode and the punching of things to get monocoins. It seems very time consuming compared to how it was handled in the first two games. Also, for some reason opening the eHandbook has a load time even though it was instant in the previous games. Maybe because they were made for PSP or Vita or whatever and the ports were using the processing power of the PS4. But why does it need a loadtime even so? The handbook itself seems less intuitive then either games, but I probably just need to get used to it.

I'm settling into the stylistic differences in the game and I'm coming to like them quite a bit.

When I met Tojo, literally the first thing I did was advance the text till her character's name showed up and then googled the name of the voice actor who plays Rhea in Three Houses to see it was the same person, and it was.

Is Yonaga supposed to be from Okinawa or something like that?

LMAO.

It looks like Kaede's locker outside the gymnasium says Akamaisu rather than Akamatsu, but that might just be the poor quality of the visuals that up close.

Not sure why we needed to see a cutscene of our main character get naked right off the bat just because she's a girl. I don't think they'd have done that with Makoto or Hajime. Meh. I like Kaede. She seems spunky and her cute pink sweeter makes her look all snuggly. Her hair nodes are funny.

I wonder if there's any reason nighttime is an hour more than it used to be.

Anyway, here's a quick ranking list of the characters based on my interaction with them in the prologue.

01. Tojo
02. Yonaga
03. Gonta
04. Ryoma
05. Shuichi
06. Tsumugi
07. Shinguji
08. Kaito
09. Iruma
10. Himiko
11. Kokichi
12. Harukawa
13. Amami
14. K1-B0
15. Tenko

And for the record, I'm not opposed to watching the anime and I imagine I will at some point. I just don't, while I'm engaged in the games, feel the need to suddenly stop that engagement to watch a fairly lengthy tv show before I can proceed.

Edit: "Gonta find manhole earlier"

Oh myyyyy.

Edit: "An important hole near some bush!? Sounds familiar, am I right ladies!?"

Not sure if funny or gross.

I was supposed to lose that escape game thing, right?

You were expected to, but it is possible to beat it. You get an extra scene and a crappy reward for it!

Yeah no, this Kokichi guy can really just go fuck himself.

Shuichi is such a fucking good boy. I love my little gender-swapped Kyoko.
