After 8 years, I guess I had already stopped expecting a follow-up to Random Access Memories, but it feels weird to get confirmation.

Wasn't a fan of Random Access Memories.

Alive 2007 is still my favorite thing they've done. It's a really great live set blend of their first 3 albums. It also fixes the issue I have with a lot of EDM where you "get" the song in like 30-60 seconds but the track still goes on another 3-4 minutes.

I really ought to get around to listening to Alive 1997...

Hmm...one of their better songs, but not my absolute favorite. They have too many greats. Here's my quick top ten:
  1. Da Funk
  2. Around the World
  3. One More Time
  4. Digital Love
  5. Get Lucky
  6. Harder Better Faster Stronger
  7. Aerodynamic
  8. Rollin' and Scratchin'
  9. Giorgio by Moroder
  10. Instant Crush? Doin' It Right? Revolution 909? Something About Us? the top 9 are solid for me, but then there's a bunch of stuff around the same level

I could respect Homework > RAM even if I disagree but either way you listed 13 songs in your top 10 and less than a third of them are from Homework so I have a hard time believing your hot take!

I feel like Homework is stronger than the sum of its parts, both in its structure and what it represents. It belongs to a very important moment in electronic music, while Discovery and Random Access Memories, while both great, owe a lot to other genres. So Discovery and Random Access Memories have more hit songs due to their pop influences, but there's something about Homework as a whole that remains unique to me. (There's also the fact that I think the latter albums have their weaker moments while Homework is strong from end to end)

All three are among the best albums ever made, however, and I used to prefer Discovery. But Homework grows on me every time I listen.

Like, I'm relistening to Discovery now after having just listened to Homework...the stretch between Crescendolls and High Life is fine but nothing special. Meanwhile, Homework captures the feeling of a perfect rave throughout. Consistency is important to me in an album.

for me, veridis quo is the only... not low point but "not as great as everything else" point on discovery. it's a decent song but that's the only time when i'm like "ok can we move on now." i agree that homework doesn't have any songs like that, it's consistently great.

i still like discovery better (i have a lot more nostalgia for that album - i got into homework way later) but yeah, they're both among my favorite albums of all time for sure.

I dunno, I could say the same about Homework, honestly! Daft Punk owes exactly as much of their success with Homework to Chicago House as Discovery/RAM take from disco and pop. And I don't think that's a bad thing at all - plus Daft Punk has always been up front about it. There's a whole track on Homework where they just list their influences!

I would basically just make this same argument as a positive for Discovery lol.

I think the big difference to me is that there are plenty of definitive disco and pop albums and not as many definitive house albums. Again, not that this is a problem for Discovery; I just find it weird to leave Homework out of the conversation, especially when including RAM.

I'm not leaving it out of the conversation! It's a great album! I think the other two are better. I'm not grading on a curve based on what's definitive for the genre or anything, I just actually think the other two are far more consistent.

Human After All is the one I'm content to leave out of the conversation.

i do think there's a difference between homework era daft punk and their later eras. there was a ton of house in the '90s that was influenced by homework while i don't think discovery and RAM necessarily led to a huge amount of '70s disco-influenced electronic music. not saying that's a point in homework's favor but there is a difference to me.

Damn that sucks.

My favorite Daft Punk song is the one where they keep saying "Long....Mr. Footlong. Mr. Foot...Long. Mr. Footlong"

Or at least I thought all these years. I just typed in those lyrics to find the name. Apparently it's called Face to Face.

I love them but I'm okay with this. Didn't seem like anything else was coming and it's good to move on. It makes it much more likely they'll come back in 10-20 years with an awesome comeback album.

Also I'm pretty sure live Daft Punk shows weren't actually done by the 2 guys, so they could still happen. Plus there's so many tribute shows going on if you want that vibe.
