CAT!

Cooler than I expected but I mainly expected it not to be cool based on it not being cool for a lot of it, so that's a wash. Also it never is that cool. I still am convinced that this is OCRemix

walruses be like "fat too op". I need to care about this more. I don't know why I don't. I like everything about it. It just never coalesces into something I regard as a whole. Later in the contest hopefully this will be fixed.

yeah that's okami

YOUR INTENTION TO COMPREHEND YOUR DEPRESSION MEET YOUR END. wow that almost made sense. for a second i thought i was onto something. i am going to say that this is tied for best dragon song in the contest

This reminds me of Fantastic Contraption and also did last year which is weird because I can't recall the music to the game at all. It'd be super fitting for it though. I should play it again I bet I could make good catapults on my own now without needing to look them up. They were usually bugged anyway so my 10 year old self had to debug them anyway to get them to work. Why bother uploading a machine that's broken?... now that I think about it, I don't remember if I actually got any of the broken catapults to work. I assumed I just messed up a connection somewhere, but what if they were *designed* flawed, a flaw where you wouldn't expect, an intentional exercise in futility released upon the kind of crowd that would obsessively try to correct mistakes? What if that stupid four-ball catapult design was my first real exposure to internet trolling?

There is a lot of wonderfully cheesy songs in the bracket, and Jungle Dragon was the one that somehow made me go "Yea that's too much sir." Wild.

Face Shrine is cool, actually, but I kinda like the idea of a remake's song incorporating the original theme more than the actual song, and divorced from its story context its not quite there.
smh should have used the soundfont that sounded really pmd-y
I am voting for Roar of the Jungle Dragon solely so I can have a full animal vote and no other reason. It's certainly not because I nominated it and really like it.

Obstacle (9.3^ - 5th place) / Ryoshima Coast (9.2 - 10th place)
Roar of the Jungle Dragon (7.8 - 31st place) / Impossible Worlds (8.0 - 27th place)

Close matches today! (Four of the tracks are super close!) Obstacle has gone from like 8.4 my first listen to more like a 9.5 now (my fourth listen), though I'm not sure if I'd put it above the stuff ranked above it at the moment. And it sounds like the splicing error of past uploads of Ryoshima Coast seems to be gone! Every upload I found in the past had that same error.

I love how either Obstacle or Ryoshima Coast HAS to win a match, mwahahaha >_>

Level 6 - Face Shrine
Obstacle
Impossible Worlds

kitty ! I'm pretty sure at least one of those cat's meows is some stock sound used in an old PC game I would play a lot but I don't know which one off the top of my head. Kitty song is a very "Okay" song for me, doesn't do anything wrong but I feel very little towards it either. Face Shrine has this cool, unsettling, wooden, feel to it that I appreciate. Reminds me of Lighthouse.

yay opl3 !! Obstacle is a cool , calm-playful sort of song, I really like the section that goes at :33, especially how the bass sort of works in the opposite direction of the uh *scrolls up to video* Kalimba at :40ish. Ryoshima Coast is another okay track that pushes both ends -- I'm not really a fan of the majestic orchestra sound, but the song has a few cool moments like 1:21. Obstacle is by far my favorite song today but the rest of the songs are still alright

Oh No Vocals. Well these vocals aren't completely awful to me like some can be (though they still certainly don't help), so this match is actually pretty close for me! Still gonna go with Impossible Worlds though. I love the idea of Impossible Worlds when I listen to music I want them to take me to Impossible Worlds especially ones that are way more Impossible than the Worlds painted by Impossible Worlds' soundscape but it's still a kind of neat, simple little form of surreal here. There are occasional moods where I would want to listen to Impossible Worlds and listening to it more is putting me in one of those moods but I don't think I would have moods where I'd want to play Jungle Dragon Roar song so maybe this match isn't actually that close after all

Face Shrine!!! You are the first song to make me go against my favs bracket!!! I should've paid more attention filling that out, but I've also listened to the song in full before and it never clicked like it did today! I'm pretty neutral on the use of the original chip tune (two words), it's that deeeep bassline that really carries the song for me (with support from the high strings). I consider this...an adequate replacement for Waltz of Meditation 2! No, really! The multilayered bass and its big-leap-up chord movement at 0:30-0:38 sounds just like 0:36-0:44 in Waltz!!! I'M NOT CRAZY

Level 6 - Face Shrine

GITADORA - I was actually close to voting for this one, but EXCUSE me who put DOGS in my cat noises and banger track? I kind of actually prefer it was one track (cute, whimsical, cat noises) or the other (guitar thrashing) since it clashes a bit for my plebian tastes, but it's extremely solid guitarplay all the way through the tail end of the track. (But no, really, there's nothing wrong with it, the nostalgia won out on this vote.)
TLoZ:LA - Man, what a rough break for this one. It does an amazing, eerie callback to the Game Boy tune for the same dungeon, and it's just unsettling throughout, but it's against... THAT thing R1. Still, it manages to sound eerie and nostalgic the same time, and it's getting the nostalgia vote as a result.

SB: This one somehow takes me back to my SimCity 2000 days, which, coming off of Zelda, is a surprising bit of nostalgia for having never played Seraphic Blue or listening to its soundtrack for fun. It's better than okay, but I don't like some of the shriller parts of the tune.
Okami: Easily top 3 favorite songs from Okami and I'm not even a little bitter that it trounced Okamiden - Ryoshima South during nominations. The only downside of this submission is that we miss the opening swell for the "midday" section that begins halfway through the song, though both Ryoshima A and B are awesome. Kind of surprised this wasn't retired, if I'm honest.

Terraria Calamity - Despite playing the hell out of Terraria, I never even heard of Calamity mod until this year >_>. I was, um, not expecting something that sounds like a modern 3D Sonic end-boss fight? And then it turns into a guitar solo with a backup choir and strings, because why not. I like it! However...
MV2 - I can't really elucidate why I like this song, but I really like this song for some reason and I don't know why and oh God I'm having an existential crisis please help.

Level 6 - Face Shrine
Obstacle
Impossible Worlds

-(i really expected to like this song based solely on composer and source, but this might be the only nekomata master song i have heard that i dont like. it just has nothing i look for in his stuff. i appreciate the oriental feel and instrumentation at least. his melodic style is still there but it's not quite as powerful as it would be to me in a situation where i could hear interesting harmonies on an "electronic piano" under it...I still appreciate the enthusiasm this drives home and world it takes me to at least. i can't complain about this being here though when my actual favorite nekomata master song was the first lock in the contest)-

-[i said i like dungeon themes, face shrine isn't really what i meant when i said that, but it's still cool. it's hard to say much about it, it does some things i'd have derided as cliche and cheesy in the past but today i think they are cool dramatic tension. I really like minako hamano, but i actually have this exact reaction to her stuff A LOT: there will be a song by her that at first i find grating or even makes me wince because the forms of musical tension it leans on are so lingering, but as time goes on it grows to become one of my favorite songs. I have not listened to this track enough times for that to happen, but it happens with basically everything by (or suspected to be by) her from metroids, to where i would say she's my favorite metroid composer. given my fondness for her in everything else i've heard, it's a crime i have not really explored link's awakening's music (original or remake) much at all. this reminds me a lot of the super metroid songs i like that no one cares about, i wonder why? ? ? ? !!! HJMMM(minako hamano)M]-

-{i don't feel very strongly about this match. but i am somewhat surprised to be on this side of it. initially i remember not clicking with this the first time i listened, definitely grew on me a lot.}-

-----

-(oh man WHERE do i start. Ok. so between last contest and now, Kimihiro Abe has become my favorite video game music composer pretty comfortably. now that i've done a more thorough basiscape dive, learned which tracks he did on so many of my favorite soundtracks, almost always specifically my favorite ones are his.
~~~~~
This is very much a "deep cut" that i only learned about by chance. This game actually isn't super obscure as far as rpgmaker games go, but i don't think many people realize that the name he's credited as (Abecho) is the same person as Kimihiro Abe. His midi stuff was made noticeably before he joined Basiscape, going back to when he would've still been in college. I feel like a lot of things about Abe's style pre-basiscape are actually very different from once he joined, there's a lot more "POKEMON MYSTERY DUNGEON" energy to his sound in that old stuff. Chord changes that change the tonal center like every bar and require more unusual melodic weaving around, constantly changing between different scales, to accommodate. that being probably the main way i'd describe this period of his stuff (this is basically my favorite composition style).
~~~~~
Sadly, almost everything Abe wrote in this midi era is lost media, gone forever, he does not have them, lost them in a hard drive crash apparently, and who knows if anyone archived any of that stuff. Only 6 have survived to my awareness. The 3 songs of his that are in this game, and 3 others i got from the person who runs the OnlyMIDIs twitter account. Hopefully, someday, someone can unearth more
~~~~~
ok so to actually talk about this song as a song, well it'll be kinda redundant (especially with what i already described above as the main trait of his composition style in this era) because i will basically be saying "I LIKE THIS CHORD CHANGE" every single time there is a chord change in the song. It's like my favorite section of id~purpose but on steroids, constant modulation, going unexpected places that make me float in the air. but the melodic line keeps it cohesive. this song is exactly my favorite composition style AAAAAAAAAH. it sounds so much like "zenk" or "pmd" or yeah. those things. that i like. a lot. i will miss you. but i will keep MOVING FORWARD AND NOT BE LIKE ONE OF THOSE MIRA-MIRANS because the future is important. Part of what i like about that kalimba ostinato is how the delay echo feels like it's almost compositionally built into it, the rhythmic pattern requires the echo to feel complete. THIS SONG IS SO "catchy". To think this isn't even my favorite kimihiro abe song that is in seraphic blue
~~~~~
I REGRET nominating this on opl3 "thefatman 2op set" instrumentation, especially with this particular emulation where the synth bass is weirdly loud and the vibratos kinda exaggerated. but enough people liked it specifically this way, i felt i couldn't go back on it. Personally, as far as "retro" chip/etc formats go, my favorite sound is OPL3, and especially these presets. their plastic tones produce the most colorful and vivid imagery in my head of any sounds possible. This is heavily my upbringing being entirely pc/dos games in the 90s, and learning to count from screwing around with midi files; something very specific to my own experience, and had i grown up differently i would've probably preferred different sounds. but because it's so deeply embedded from age 3, it's one of the few constants about my musical preferences to last all the way from back then until now. Influenced even which realistic sounds i enjoy, things that feel more similar to FM, are simply more vivid sounds to me. Probably why I love Mallet Percussion like "marimba" and "vibraphone" (and "kalimba") so much
~~~~~
However, this song is obviously absolutely not meant for opl3; BUT i chose it as the way to render this midi almost entirely because that Kalimba loop sounds REALLY COOL on opl3. everything else i think sounds better on something else, but that kalimba loop is just so fun on this sound that i couldn't bear to nominate it on anything else. Honestly as much as i love opl3 on these presets, i have to be in a very specific mindset to appreciate them these days. BUT when i'm in that mode i'll go through tons of midis played back on it, and what midi do i come back to the most when listening to midis on those sounds? Somehow, it's this one. when i'm in an opl3 midi mode, i listen to this midi far more than any other. that very fact, is exactly why, in the end, i felt i had to nominate this, on this sound, no matter how much it would potentially damage its strength in a contest setting. over the hundreds of other "higher quality options", this just fits this song in such a fun way that i find addictive.
~~~~~
this track was ACTUALLY meant for Yamaha MU100. however probably only like 1% of people who played the version of this game that used midis actually had one of those, they weren't common or cheap to own. as a result, a later version of seraphic blue actually replaced the midi files, and baked some form of Yamaha MU recording of his tracks for it into mp3 files...unfortunately the rendering on those is actually not great imo. I also think with certain settings it becomes drenched in reverb in a way that can be unwieldy, but here's more similar to the intended sound:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YwfnDMIyBkc
maybe next year i will try that version or something more similar to it, if this year's version goes nowhere
~~~~~
While i'm at it, with all the PMD comparisons, here is some more music by Kimihiro Abe from this era that has super pmd energy, highly recommended listen for anyone who likes pmd series music:
-[okami is one of my favorite video games. I consistently enjoy its soundtrack, but mostly because i like the instrumentation. i have never connected with this song in particular unfortunately, but it does have the instrumentation i enjoy!! I find it difficult to gather things to say about this track. I dont dislike it at least, and the world of this game would be empty without it. I certainly have memories of playing this game, being in cool parts of the game i liked being in, while this soared through the background. Works perfectly for the very open atmosphere with an invitation for exploration that this game has. funnily a scrapped nom for BOTH vgmc14 and vgmc15 is a song from this game. now that i've gotten muramasa in though, it's time to try the okami thing i've been putting off for years next year. ]-
-{sorry okami but, this isnt the song to get me excited about okami music. my favorite okami song is natural life a from muramasa:the demon blade by kimihiro abe hey he's the copmoser of obstacle what a coincidence}-
-----
-(it's funny how we came to use "prog" in this community to mean "things that mycro and kaonashi1 and haste like" (this is partially my fault) which i mean...it's accurate when talking about compositional tendencies of the genre anyways. but i feel like most people would actually think of big long epic rock songs that are nothing like what any of us nom or talk about, when they hear the term. uh anyway this feels like it'd be a song on a prog metal album that i dont like as much as all of the other songs on the same album. BUT IT HAS DM DOKURO EPIC CHORD CHANGES that make me fall over that's good. It's just like soft collision (i can't believe i didn't make the connection regarding the chord changes in that song that a bunch of others did to dm dokuro until after seeing the comments in the thread). I'm definitely more into the less energetic parts and parts without vocals; not because i dislike fast pace or vocals, but because i think the calmer bits let me focus on the elements in the composition that emotionally engage me with a lot less distraction)-
-[here is board of canada here we go; my favorite genre "important dance music". the cuts in this song being just imperfect enough to generate popping sounds is really neat as an effect. this is the last thing that makes sense to compare this song to BUT IT REMINDS ME OF drakengard twelfth chapter because of that, i forgot to comment how striking it was when my ears lean toward a focus on higher frequencies, the moments in the song where you hear the clicking from the sample cutting harder than other parts. that imperfection as style is so cool. It's awesome to see what i think is a naturally tense technique (ie drakengard) actually applied to something really soothing and relaxing instead (this). This song also fulfills my obsession with reversed pads fading in and then cutting off immediately at the start of the next bar. when i tune this track out without really thinking about it, zone out into space, i'm seeing these gradual morphs between the artificial and the natural, and i love that. It's sometimes unclear which elements are artificial or which are natural, because of the effects applied, and stuff, it's all so smooth. todd baker is cool. and i still need to play this game because i automatically like isometric things as a look. ]-
Level 6 - Face Shrine
Ryoshima Coast
Roar of the Jungle Dragon
First match is kinda tricky. Nekozamurai is Nekomata Master meets Gitadora, and I'm not sure if these two styles mesh all that well together. I definitely feel like it's the "Nekomata Master" feeling of this that carries this rather than the "Gitadora", but overall I'm not really sure the loud guitar helps this much. Face Shrine is sppoky but overall just a very short loop. It's the classic battle of a song that does too many things versus one that doesn't do enough things. But, for as minimalistic as it is, it nails that feeling of emptiness perfectly, and the modern orchestration gives it such a weird-but-cool feeling to it.
---
WOW I am getting heavy dj vu of Jincuba listening to Obstacle. That bass line is going for very much the same thing here, but unfortunately I'm not as hooked on this song. I dunno, maybe it's the overly prominent MIDI kalimba mixed with the very dissonant tone ever-present in the background. Ryoshima Coast is kind of the boring pick here (I am sick of it at this point), but it's pleasant to listen to I guess.
---
OwO what's this, a Terraria Calamity Mod song with vocals? (wait, wasn't there one here before too?) The vocalist here kinda sounds like one of those YouTube anime song fandub singers (not a bad thing, but I'm not sure it fits with the song). I actually cannot seem to find who sang this. Anyways, pretty cool power metal thing here. Impossible Worlds has a very "background music" feel to it, but the background chords halfway in are kinda cool.
Actually throwing in a ranking just for today because my writeup didn't really catch my relative preference for these well at all lol
I'm fairly certain it was DM DOKURO himself
Level 6 - Face Shrine
Ryoshima Coast
Roar of the Jungle Dragon
Aw both of the songs in the first and last matches are so good, shame to vote against either of them.
Nekozamurai no Gyakushuu (107th) vs Level 6 - Face Shrine (166th)
Obstacle (78th) vs Ryoshima Coast (178th)
Roar of the Jungle Dragon (175th) vs Impossible Worlds (227th)
MEOW hello catmata master this song is very Nekom Mata Master despite not actually being very close to his usual stuff (you can hear more typical nekomata instruments underneath all the guitar soloing) and that makes it FUN!! definitely not my favorite of his works by any stretch of the imagination tbh but its still super fun and lets face it you can't go wrong with nekomata (i wont mention crack if you dont...) Face Shrine I'm am very surprised by how much I like it but I guess also I shouldn't be because if reminds me a LOT of Chrono Cross - Prisoners of Fate which is like literally one of my favorite vgm so lol. I have seen mentioned that this song is very context-driven and if it's similar context to the original track (which I don't really remember that well tbf) then I completely understand and my ranking of this would probably be up a ton.
obstacle is so niiiice~~~ yeah not much i can say just i love listening to obstacle because its like im on a cloud and just flyiiiiing and i HATE THIS UPLOAD of ryoshima (broken record i've said this every year for what three years now but the OST link at 2:49 is so jarring and a random place to just drop-of-a-hat switch to II WHY DIDNT YOU AT LEAST WAIT TEN SECONDS AAAAA and also you completely lose how amazing II's intro is so like yeah i basically can never vote for the OST combination of I and II ever even though I like the song in a vaccuum send tweet
both songs in match 3 i'm pretty *shrug* on, jungle dragon is definitely a calamity song but just not a strong one and impossible worlds is nice but doesn't do anything to grab me. hard match but not one i feel strong about
Nekozamurai no Gyakushuu
Ryoshima Coast
Roar of the Jungle Dragon
Cat samurai probably isn't a top 20 Nekomata Master song (hell, maybe not even top 50...) but it's still enjoyable. Face Shrine is a neat remix of Zelda 1 dungeon music, though I think Zelda 1 dungeon music is better.
Second match is pretty blah. Ryoshima's moderately enjoyable at least.
I think I'd like Roar more without the vocals, but they're still good, and the rest of the song is still great. Impossible Worlds is real cool stuff too. Probably ranking it too high down below, but it was nice.
Voting for my fifth favorite song of the day whoops
Roar of the Jungle Dragon > Impossible Worlds > Nekozamurai no Gyakushuu > Level 6 - Face Shrine > Ryoshima Coast > Obstacle
I would have voted for a few Monument Valley songs over Roar of the Jungle Dragon, but not Impossible Worlds (though I still enjoyed it!).
