Do you think Michael is right?

Uber Eats Driver, Smithson Michael made an emotional plea after he received a paltry $1.19 TIP when he drove more than an HOUR to make a delivery!!

He made the video on tiktok sobbing uncontrollably that he was struggling to survive driving for the food delivery service and asked customers to tip in a video viewed more than 1 million times

He said "I wish people knew what it was like to deliver for Uber Eats, Postmates, Doordash all these companies. I just spent an hour driving around for $1.19 tip. I mean would it hurt y'all to tip us, throw us 5 dollars?"

In addition to that he only got $2 from the app for that delivery and said "What's that? That's not even enough to cover gas. How am i supposed to survive like that?"

Michael was living homeless and had already fallen 4 MONTHS behind on car payments and said "Everything fell apart on me and i haven't been able to sustain myself, provide for myself, and these are essential services. I just wish people knew what it was like. I wish they understand what it was like to drive these services".

Many of the comments were sympathetic while others placed blame on the companies saying they charged huge fees for deliveries

People said that these people deserve living wages as well and some even sent donations to him

The company posted a net loss of 6.77 billion for 2020 with a 958 million loss in its 4th quarter as it's still struggling to turn a profit

Do you think Michael is right?

Can they pick which deliveries they go on? Maybe instead of spending an hour going on one delivery take more close range deliveries in that time.

Tipping shouldn't be a thing. It's not the customer's job to directly pay the employees.

WTH?

Seriously people, what is going on here.

Uber eats charges a FREAKTON for a delivery, often that takes about 10-15 mins total (including driving both ways).

They now have a $3 minimum (might be 4 I forget) for the service charge AND a delivery fee that is often up to $10 (which means just getting the eats pass makes sense since it's $10 a month for free delivery).

Tipping wise it suggest 20% of the bill but does it AFTER TAXES AND SERVICE FEES ARE ADDED).

So a 12.50 sandwich from jimmy johns for instance ends up being $3 more for service fee, 6$ more for delivery (without eats pass), which brings it to 21.50, then it adds 11% in washington for taxes so that is another $2.20...bringing the total before tip to 23.70$.

If you tip the base (auto set) 20%, that is another $4.74 cents.

Your total ends up being 28.44$ for a 12.50 cent freaking sandwich and that is saying your only ordering for 1 person.

The answer sadly is to do what I do, and NOT ORDER FROM UBER EATS. They are not paying the drivers squat, and it's freaking almost 3x the cost of the food when all is said and done.

If I do order, I generally only tip $3 flat, no matter how much they charge. The cost is freaking reduciolous and 3$ is well over 20% of the original order price.

Tipping should not be based on all the freaking additional charges they add to the damn order.

So yeah, the $1.19 the dude got? IF the order was only 8$ or so, then that is somewhere around 15%......which isn't a horrible tip. The fact it was an hour away though is crazy, they shouldn't be having drivers go that far, and it was the drivers choice to accept it.

This. The company should be paying him, but he's acting like he's only paid via tips.

thats really shitty

I currently am working a delivery job but thank god we have like a 13min maximum, so at most a single delivery should only take 30 minutes. I usually get tipped decently but I hate when someone who lives who lives far away gives like a 3 buck tip.

The issue isnt the tip, the issue is that these companies are paying slave wages and are knowingly taking advantage of people who dont have more opportunities and getting them to do damage to their car that the work will not pay off in the long run.

its a scam and needs to be regulated.

The "service" is communicating your order to the restaurant and organizing a driver. The delivery is considered a separate service, though most of that also goes to the company (though they'd like you to think it goes to the driver). Usually, they're also charging the restaurant a percentage on top of all of the extra fees.

Should be mentioned they also INCREASE THE COST of the base items you buy often as well.

The above was one of the better deals I could find cost of food to total price ratio and it was still over 20$ more to get it delivered by uber eats, then to pick it up yourself. IF you only tipped 2$ or so, it would be about $20 total to get it delievered over the base price.

How the drivers are not getting paid a decent wage when delivery fees are over $10, taxes and fees are another 6$, is beyond me. How the company is somehow "loosing money" makes no freaking sense. They get more money then the place making the freaking food, and if they only paid the driver half of that.....it would mean both the company and the driver was making about $30 an hour (or more due to multiple deliveries being a common thing).

This is why I stopped using delivery services a few years back. And the food is usually $1-2 more than menu price on the app, so youre paying even more than you normally would.

I don't understand how this service ever gained popularity when you're literally paying double or more for your meal. So many people are barely scraping by financially. Who is keeping these kinds of services afloat?

These types of companies need to die. This is legalized slave labor. And it's not as easy as just finding a better job, because that's oftentimes not even possible. Corporate America is just turning into a hellscape.

No one likes to tip or ever thinks "yeah tipping is a great thing". Doesn't mean you can't throw in a few dollars for a dude who is making shit pay to do work for you. You choosing not to tip isn't some big fuck you to the company, you're just fucking over the delivery guy. If you are outside of America then good for you. I wish companies paid our restaurant staff and delivery drivers livable wages so they wouldn't have to rely on tips.

My work gives us a dashpass promotion for doordash that cuts off like 10-15% of the entire order or gets rid of the delivery fee. I just add what I save for my orders to the tip.
