It's a tough question for sure, in the absence of the founding fathers I don't think anyone alive is qualified to make such a call

The 13th

Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.

You can keep the involuntary servitude because, ya, it's a dangass prison... but remove the slavery

I'm not sure I understand the question. Just from the offset it seems like a troll "lets make it illegal to handle crime" but I will say my consideration is private prisons should already be unconstitutional with current amendments.

Debtor's Prison still basically exists in the US, it's just hidden behind other laws (Failure to appear etc). Since inmates can be force to work, live in horrid conditions etc, in many ways it's worse then slavery (was) in most civilizations (other then Egypt and a few others).

Due to a huge racial disparity in prisons it's obviously at least somewhat racially biased (slavery that is).

For profit prisons just kick that up a whole nother notch.

Slavery never ended in the US.

"Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime"

Which is also why several decades ago, the US adopted the UN war on drugs agenda. We have more prisoners per capita than any country on the planet as well as people under watch with probation and the like. I think it's something like 1 in every 38 people is either in a correctional facility or on probation... because we have too many laws. Stupid ones. And unconstitutional at that

Slavery through the prison system is also more profitable. And it was not an accident

Yes, I don't mean anything nefarious or weaselly, just remove the permission of slavery as a punishment for crime so that you are 100% technically slave free

Yes, forced labor should be completely illegal. If incarcerated people want to do work, a program could be created where they could do supervised voluntary labor in exchange for the same wages and benefits that free people enjoy, without being fined into oblivion by the prison industry. If poverty breeds crime, then our incarceration system should be designed so that prisoners have the consensual means to mitigate financial destitution while imprisoned. Their punishment is their sentence of imprisonment, not forced exploitation.

So you're saying slave labor is gone as long as only incarcerated people do it?
