"Using the word 'homosexual' is offensive. Instead of using the word 'homosexual', use the words 'gay' or 'lesbian'. Do not use the word 'homosexual' to identify same-sex couples. Instead, consider saying simply 'couples', or do not bring to attention the person's sexuality."

Some other interesting notes:
"Using the word 'gay' or 'lesbian' as a noun is offensive. Instead of saying 'he's a gay', consider saying 'he's a gay person.'."
"Do not use the term 'sexual preference', as this implies that sexuality is a choice and can be 'cured'. Instead, consider using the terms 'sexual orientation' or simply 'orientation' if you must."

And at the end, there's a list of defamatory language not to be used. lolwtf... who the hell would ever say something like this at work? People's sexuality at work is literally the last thing in my mind. I don't give a shit if you're straight, gay, lesbian, trans, etc. as long as you do your freakin' job.

You must be the reason for this type of training to be required, if you think people's sexuality at work is important.

One time a coworker got sent to HR for saying "Mexican" because the correct way to say it was "person of Mexican descent."

Odds are that there was an incident of some kind to spark this. So someone probably went all out and then claimed that they didn't know it wasn't cool to throw slurs around the office

Ideally it shouldn't come up, but the reality is that when you spend 8+ hours a day with people you end up talking about personal stuff

There was this portion in the training as well. The entire training was about 2 hours long:
  1. The first part was all about disabilities, and not to say "idiot", etc., ask about someone's disability, claim disability to cover, etc.
  2. The second part was all about LGBTQ rights. It gave examples "from the other side", like how saying "my religion finds this offensive, why is the company celebrating Pride Month?" is not protected under religious freedoms, as you are voicing that LGBTQ = offensive.
  3. The third part was about ethnicity, and explicitly had a very racist example of Mexicans and the border, which I won't even repeat here.

Nothing unusual about this. This has been the norm for as long as I can remember

To clarify, I thought it was interesting because this had to be pointed out to people, and who the hell would say "Jane is a lesbian woman" or "what's your sexual orientation?" at work? I do not work in a medical industry*.

Wait homosexual is offensive?

Isnt it literally a more proper way of saying gay? Like when youre trying not to offend?

Of course I do. They talk about their wives/gfs or husbands/bfs, but I don't then go "omg you're a straight guy" or "omg you're a gay man" and make a big deal out of it.

I've never had HR training this visceral before. Like they straight up say all the words, and these extremely sensitive examples. It was shocking.

you can very normally casually mention that someone's gay without making a big deal out of it

"does bob have a wife?" "he has a husband actually" "oh i didn't know he was gay"

That wasn't the point of the training. The point of the training was not to be offensive about it.

Polish people are dumb jokes used to be a thing.

Anyways yeah I find this stupid. Homosexual is like the legit terminology for same sex relationships. Was literally taught in my science class.

This is what I hate. People wanna change up words and suddenly consider other words offensive today and expect everyone to be on the same page tomorrow.

As a Homosexual male, I wouldn't take offense to being referred to as either Gay or Homosexual. HOWEVER, it does depend on the context, tone, and conversation that includes this description.

I find that many people who talk about "how we can't use this word" or "this word is now suddenly offensive" forget that there is context and tone in every conversation. So yes, in that conversation it was offensive (intentional or not, the offender doesn't really get to make that call).

And remember, just because you aren't offended, doesn't mean it isn't offensive.

The company I work for has been sued multiple times for various things by people theyve terminated over the years. The more creative sue happy people get, the more pages like this show up in our training and legal. I was deathly ill over the winter, and without written consent from me, no one could tell anyone else what was wrong with me because they could be sued by me if they hadtheyre big enough and have enough history to follow the legal rec. If I nutted up like drunk Mel Gibson tomorrow, they wont get sued because I signed the paper that said dont be like drunk Mel gibson.

This is basally to cover themselves from lawsuits, not necessarily because people are regularly saying any of those things in what is supposed to be a professional work environment.

You cast a wide enough net in hopes you catch everything.

Yes, most people look at the list of no-no words and phrases and think "who would actually say any of this while on the clock" but the fact that it's on the list means someone, somewhere, got sued because a co-worker said that word and they took offense to it.
