After initially dropping the show due to gore concerns, picking it back up with the dub after some urging from other people (hi Itachi), and following the dub week by week, I've finally reached the end of the first season of Eighty-Six... and it was pretty damn good. Shin quickly became one of my favorite male characters of the year, and the flashback scene of Fido reliving its memories with the Spearhead squadron before exploding actually made me tear up a little. That was the point where the show jumped to being closer to a 9/10 than an 8/10 in my book.

I'm excited for the second season, though I'll be waiting for the dub again for consistency's sake.

If Eighty-Six aired on any other day of the week, I would have talked about it more as I watched it. But my focus on Saturdays is always on Precure first and foremost, then lately I've also had Magia Record and Fena: Pirate Princess getting a lot of my focus. I was always too busy talking and thinking about the other Saturday shows that Eighty-Six just always slipped my mind and got lost in the shuffle.

I had to replace my laptop earlier this year (old one was from like 2017 and suddenly stopped letting me install updates, including an important security update) but even my new one is still a cheap $300 piece of crap. It's all I can afford, but it still does everything I need/want it to well enough.

You probably just needed to directly install an update, Microsoft stopped updates to computers that didn't have a specific update around that time frame. Only reason I know that is because my anti-malware software needed an update to the OS, and I read the notes.

I tried that, over and over, through every way you could imagine, and it just wouldn't move up to the latest version no matter what I did. After over a dozen attempts, half a dozen calls to Microsoft support, and 36 hours without sleep, I just gave up and bought a new one.

I'm most looking forward to Sakugan. It's being made by the same studio that made Symphogear (and you all know how much I fucking love Symphogear) plus the idea of a father and daughter mecha team sounds really interesting.

I'm not going to watch Muv-Luv Alternative (it's an adaptation of a VN and I've heard people who have read the VN say that the anime is doomed to be a rushed dumpster fire of an adaptation) and obviously I'm going to continue watching Eighty-Six, but the other five are all originals that I have no idea how good they're going to be. I'll give them all a chance, and I'm hoping that at least two of them will turn out to be pretty good, hopefully more.

I think muv luv could work, but probably won't. I don't know how many episodes it's getting. I don't think 12 would make the show work at all but I can picture it with 24

the VN is super long but it also has a ton of repetiton and stuff you don't really need. that said, a key story arc and main character motivation comes from stuff before he gets isekai'd into mecha-land and if they just start with the mecha stuff I have no idea how they're ever gonna get this part of the story to make any sense

Pokemon's TCG has an official digital version on PC/mobile (plus the really old GB/GBC games) but unfortunately, that's the only other one I can think of. There are also some 100% digital TCG's like Hearthstone, but I'm not sure that's what you're looking for.

I would kill for a decently made digital version of WIXOSS, but at this point I don't think it's ever going to happen.

I'm familiar to Duel Masters and Pokemon of course, but have no clue about any of the others/if they're worth getting into physically (Weiss Schwarz, Cardfight Vanguard, etc).
Shadowverse seems OK for a digital one, I'll definitely keep it in mind. Just a shame that some of these don't have video game versions to demo the play style on...

Cardfight Vanguard has a mobile game, but I didn't mention it before because I've never played it and I'm not sure if it's actually a full representation of the TCG. It could be like Duel Links was to Yu-gi-oh where it's a shrunken down and simplified version of the game.

That might be worth checking out, but again, I don't know how close it is to the real-life TCG.

I've played a bit of weiss and I feel like a lot of the appeal of it is just getting to play with cards of your waifus. which except for the rarest cards are often just screenshots directly from the show or are the most basic promo art in existence (aka 90% of the card art you've probably already seen)

the game locking you to a specific series/set for your deck makes deckbuilding uninteresting, and it definitely doesn't help that sets barely have any sort of gameplay identity since there's tons and tons of functional reprints (or near-reprints) across all the sets. The gameplay itself has some cool points, like the way it handles its comeback mechanic, but the way you block attack damage is straight up RNG (you flip cards off the top of your deck and if you flip a certain type of card, the damage is blocked) and this made basically every game I played feel unsatisfying regardless of whether I won or lost. granted, I didn't play at a very high level and I know there are some ways to reduce the RNG somewhat (maybe you could even say that rigging this in your favour is a key mechanic...) but it just feels to me like it has too many core flaws to really be fun.

that said, it's the only one of the more niche things there I know that has a local scene here. every other one I suspect it would be absolutely impossible to find anyone to play with.

if you're just trying to get into a new card game of some sort, I'd recommend taking a look at flesh and blood. might just be a local thing but it's definitely the new hotness here and the amount of hype / new players it's steadily gathering is impressive. Feels like they're grabbing a lot of the disgruntled MtG folks. it's not really very anime themed, though

Speaking of TCG's, there's a new card game anime airing next season called Build Divide, with the first IRL starter decks launching in Japan the same week as the airing of the anime's first episode. It looks interesting, closer to WIXOSS in tone and aesthetics than Yu-Gi-Oh or Vanguard. It's possible that the TCG could get an English release down the road if the anime and the Japanese launch go well. Anyone else going to check this out?

I already looked through it, and it's looking like next season might have the most anime that I've ever watched in a single season. Even if I exclude JoJo and Lupin (since I'll be waiting for the dubs of those and their dubs tend to take longer than one season to come out) I still see 15 anime that I'm interested in. Even if I drop a few, it would still be one of my most packed seasons ever.

Oh boy, I'm reading a horror visual novel called Sound of Drop, which involves a bunch of supernatural horror scenarios all taking place inside an Aquarium. In this week, I've also watched a show about running an aquarium, an episode of Iruma-kun about a date inside an aquarium, and now a Precure episode that takes place... inside an aquarium. I can't escape Sound of Drop. I'm gonna be stuck in the aquarium forever.

there were some parts that were pretty good meme fun but mostly it just sorta sucked. there's two DLC(?) routes that were written later (I think the current release is all of them together) and you can tell since they're super diffrent from the rest of the game

I'm now a quarter of the way through Happiness Charge Precure, and it continues to be a total anomaly among the Precure series that I've seen. Some of this stuff I mentioned already in the last topic when I first started watching, but some of it has happened in more recent episodes.

* Cure Lovely, despite being the lead pink Precure of the series, was actually the last of the four girls to become a Precure. Cure Princess and Cure Fortune were both shown in episode 1 before Megumi first transformed into Cure Lovely, and Cure Honey was secretly Megumi's best friend Yuko, who became a Precure before the series began but was too embarrassed to tell her friends for a while.

* The girls have already shown off over a dozen different transformations so far, both for combat and non-combat purposes.

* Cure Lovely is a total berserker and straight-up snapped a Kindabad's neck in a battle. I know they're just endlessly expendable mooks, but still...

* The Precure got their powers straight from God. No magical artifacts or mysterious other world or kingdom that needs saved or any bullshit like that. Just God himself casually telling these girls "protect the earth for me ok" and they do it.

* There are other Precure besides the main group fighting in other countries across the world. They've shown at least a dozen of them so far.

* The most recent episode I watched introduced a "Precure Hunter" who went around the world defeating some of these international Precure before setting his sights on the main group. Apparently Cure Fortune's older sister was a Precure and one of his previous victims, and also he's got a fucking sword and isn't afraid to use it against little girls.

* Right before the Precure Hunter episode, there was a hilarious baseball episode. Talk about tone whiplash.

All of these are things that I've never seen in any of the other Precure series I've seen before this one. I know Happiness Charge was marketed as the 10th anniversary Precure series so Toei went all out with it, but I didn't expect it to be this different from all the others I've seen before. I can't even really tell if it's good or bad yet, it's just so different and I need more time to get used to it.

Happiness Charge and Doki Doki are widely regarded as the worst Precure from my understanding, I assume Doki Doki is similar in nature since the only thing I know about it is a weird scene where they're all transformed and playing Whack-a-Mole together.

Real shame Happiness Charge is terrible, since the director previously directed the best season of Precure, HeartCatch. Which I can sort of see reflected in the precure designs.
