Though to be honest Wild Arms is a good contender as well.

Zelda is up there, along with a few other rpgs.

Mrs Frisby and the Rats of NIMH.

There were two sequels, Racso and the Rats of NIMH and R-T, Margaret, and the Rats of NIMH, which were written by the original author's daughter, and they were both pretty awful. Neither of these books had any relationship whatsoever to The Secret of NIMH 2, which was a truly abysmal movie.

For movies there are soooo many contenders, like The Matrix for instance, but there is only 1 movie that shines above all others, that had 3 movies all together (which knocks out Zoolander), and that I love the first with my whole heart but was so dissapointed with the sequels.

Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventures.

I heart the first movie.

Back to the Future though isn't far behind, due to being a kid when the first came out (at a summer camp), so that movie freaking rocked, but the second and third were meh at best (but not as bad as the bill and teds 2nd and 3rd, and I don't love the first as much as "Want a twinkie Genghis Khan?".

hmmm

for games, after looking through many trilogy lists, unless I'm missing something, it has to be Dark Souls 1.

it's not easy to remember everything that's a trilogy though.

runners up include:
Metroid Prime 1 - MP1 definitely best, but not the best of these
Baldur's Gate 1 - classic BG was the best infinity engine game, but doesn't beat DS1
Mass Effect 1 - good but flawed, and ME3 almost made me hate the series
SMB1 - would have won when I was a kid
Fallout 1 - I think I like F3 better though
Age of Wonders 1 - this is probably second place behind DS1. AoW1 is fantastic.
Dungeon Siege 1 - Dungeon Siege 1 is very good, but the sequels definitely are not.
Descent 1 - Descent 1 is one of the best PC action games ever, but hard to put action ahead of RPGs
Deus Ex 1 - extremely good but doesn't beat Dark Souls
Turok 1 - probably the weakest in this list
Exile/Avernum 1 - might have won when I was a teen

Back to the Future is probably the obvious choice, and for dumb comedies I'd go with The Hangover. For games maybe the first Vandal Hearts for the PS1. It looks a lot worse than the 2nd game but it's way more fun. I made the mistake of grabbing the 3rd game and that one is... ehhhhhh...

Off the top of my head the first version of EVERY movie trilogy+ is the best except for Star Wars (Empire Strikes Back) and Terminator 2.

As for video games, yeah, Kingdom Hearts a the rare one where the first is the best. Nothing else is coming to mind.

Agreed. It's got most of my favorite moments in the series, and none of my least favorite.

On that topic, An Unexpected Journey is my favorite Hobbit movie. I'm one of a handful of people who genuinely liked it, lol. Because they were stretching the plot so much, the other two devolved into generic, drawn-out fantasy-action movies; worse, they had bad action. That scene of Legolas Mario-hopping up the falling stones haunts my nightmares, and I want to strangle whoever's idea it was to turn all the movie dragons into wyverns.

Do the MCU Avengers titles count? Like, not the series as a whole, but just the Avengers movies? Sure, Infinity War/Endgame are bigger than the 2012 Avengers (Age of Ultron's kind of on the same level, stakes-wise), but I gotta go with the OG. That goes for the MCU as a whole, really, not counting The Hulk; the original Iron Man is at the very least one of my favorites in the entire series.

...Actually, for movies at least, it'd be easier to list the series where I don't prefer the first entry, lol. Games and books get a lot murkier, since games often (not always) improve on the formula in subsequent entries, and a lot of book series are enormous.

For games, Xenosaga, definitely. (Not counting Xenogears.) The second game was terrible and the third was good but the plot felt scattered and poorly paced. Understandable, considering it was envisioned as a six-part series and the creator/director stepped down after the first game, but sad.

I can't actually think of any book series where my favorite is the first. Kind of strange, really, since the beginning of the journey is usually one of my favorite parts.

The first book of the first Mistborn series - The Final Empire

The first few live action X-Men movies, before they started doing prequels and resets and whatnot? The first one may or may not have been the best, if only because its ending didn't lead to the third film. Seriously, if not for that, I'd have scrapped this mention since the first and second parts would have been equal.

Honorable mention, though, to the Karate Kid movies since the first part is a classic, the second part was fantastic, the third part was meh, the fourth was bad and worth ignoring, and the show that follows decades later is at least kinda good too. Seriously, I almost listed this as a favorite first part until I remembered how much I liked the second one.

I feel like some Doctor Who serials had great first (and best) parts, but varying (sometimes inferior) follow-ups. That said however, the 2005 series had a couple episode trilogies--the series 3 finale and one within Capaldi's final season--in which the first episode was clearly the best, the second part was still quite good, and the third was . . . it left me wanting.

I'm not counting series like Wild Arms or Zelda since those are mostly standalone titles within larger projects, rather than part of a story. Otherwise the first Wild Arms would be a favorite part 1 for me.

To be fair when he did this in LotR with the war elephants it was equally as silly. Lots of that CGI didn't hold up too well.

My biggest thing with Fellowship was that the Nazgul started off so menacing and great, then they pretty much entirely fizzle out. I know you still had that lead one later on the wyvern but still, these guys should've been featured a bit more.
