Day 6: Spirit

I always say this (and it's always true), but I'm not mega happy about this. I can tell Haunter's proportions are off a bit. I tried to do something in particular with his hands, but I couldn't really get it to come out right. I feel like with a few changes, I could make the coloring of Haunter really pop against the background, but I'm not really sure how to do it. I can visualize it, but only sort of.

I haven't been commenting on others' pieces much, sorry about that. I think you all having such different interpretations of prompts is quite cool, and also how we're sometimes on the same wavelength.

Day 7: Fan

The fan is an incomplete version of the Solar Fan from Dragon Quest. I got finished inking, and then realized that I forgot a whole part of it, and I felt it would be a real pain to fix it. I like this piece a bit more than usual, but the, ribs (I think), don't feel like they connect to the body correctly. Her head is also probably a bit big, a classic.

And looking a bit more, the fan feels a bit 2D even though it should have some 3D to it at that angle, I think. Oh well. In that same aspect, the hand is too big for the direction the fan is going, although perhaps I just made the fan too small, I had it covering where the eyes would be before, so maybe the real issue is the direction the arm is going. Just musing, I feel like the mistakes here are more interesting than my usual ones. Something to learn from.

Day 6: Spirit: Uhh...Oops. I've fallen behind, but for good cause. I wanted to do something really special for Spirit because I like ghosts. Unfortunately I ended up wasting the day thinking up ideas before settling on a Napstablook Animation. I figured the fun little ghost would be easy enough to put something out rather quickly...and I was right. But it still took just about all day. I'll work hard on catching up tomorrow, possibly by combining two topics again but we'll see.

Day 7- Fan: This one's a little complicated. I have many rabbit characters because I like them. One of them is meant to be very agile and fights using fans and wind magic. However, that character is not one I wish to share with GameFAQs for various reasons. So instead I took a totally different design and just gave her a big fan. :P As for the art itself, I really like this one. I took it kind of easy to let myself recover, but ended up doing a challenging pose that I was happy with in the end.

Day 8 - Watch: I've never drawn this one but they're meant to be a time knight of sorts. The sword is called Last Minute, and the dagger is named Final Hour. They're meant to be the faces of a clock, an idea stolen shamelessly from the song Bad End Night. This one I definitely phoned in and I'm not super happy with them. There's elements that I like, but it's a rather boring design...Doing two of these in one day did not lend itself to making something better. Ah well.

Day 8 (late): Watch.

I wanna say it was gonna make it more involved, but the clock thing was a pain, though I probably could have pulled it off better. Arguably I kinda dodged the theme, I sorta thing I might have done better to draw a watch like Seph, and then try to do more with it.

You actually did pretty well. I tried to draw a traditional clock but got the alignment wrong. So I decided to go with a digital clock.

Drawing inanimate objects has made me realize that I still lack the skill to draw things in balance/parallel.

Yesterday I suddenly remembered that one of my favorite anime has a character named Leonardo Watch. A young guy whose not terrible special but does have the All-Seeing Eyes of God. (He can see things extraordinarily well, like spot a flea on the back of a monkey 20 feet away levels of good)

Ah well, missed opportunity. Day 9 was Pressure, a topic I imagine will be rather challenging for most people. Twitter seems to have chosen to rely mostly on submarines. I'm using Tourmaline, from Houseki no Kuni. Tourmaline in real life are Piezoelectric, meaning they generate electricity from stress (Pressure, Heat, etc). In HnK this is translated as sparks flying off of Melon whenever they get stressed out or angry.

Day 9: Pressure. I feel like this image is off in a way that's hard to define. It might be something like, It was originally drawn to be looking straight ahead, but somewhere there, it decided to have a tilted head. I've done worse, but I dunno if I'm happy about it. Maybe I'm also just bothered by the thumbnail, the baggy clothes don't really come across.

Day 10 - Leaf picking her Starter Pokemon. I tried a couple of new techniques today like making the pokeball see through like in the PokeSpe manga. I kind of like how it came out but I can't shake the feeling I've messed up the perspective here and there.

By the way, I haven't been commenting on other people's art because I tend to get a little verbose in my critique. If that's something you don't mind I can offer my assessments. I just don't like leaving critique at "This is good", if I were to comment on someone's art I'd like to be very specific about what parts I like and what parts I don't.

First thing, Im interested in how you did that transparency effect with the Pokeballs. I was assuming it was a gradient of sorts, but I dunno if thats wrong or if Im just doing it wrong. It looks nice.

Second, Id love any critique of you ever want to give it to me. Its easy to stagnate when youre just told something looks good, so I try and pick a few notable problems out in my own work. But other people will notice other issues, or even have a better way of putting the issues Ive mentioned.

Loving that angle. And yeah, I leave comments because I legitimately like the art. Also because I'm a beginner myself and I lack experience, I don't think I can critique professionally.

Actually, try to give a 'pro' critique anyways. Critiquing art is one way to develop your skills. Trying to spot mistakes, or even trying to understand techniques, is a good way to practice. If you're not confident in your critique you don't need to share it, but try to think about it anyways.

Clip Studio Paint does have some cool gradient abilities, but in this case I just used a large soft brush to erase the center piece of the solid red fill. Think of it like an Airbrush, but as an eraser.

In that case, I'll work on Pressure. I went ahead and mirrored your drawing, and then threw down some guidelines over her. It should make the mistakes more noticeable.

So yeah, one eye is much larger and on a higher point of the face than the other. In many drawings that would be a sign that her head is tilted away; however you've drawn the eyes the same shape. An eye that's tilted away from us has a narrower width due to perspective, but here it's simply smaller. Then you drew her mouth at an angle that implies tilting away as well (and perhaps slightly upward since it's a little high on the face), though she's actually looking downward.

TLDR: You've met a terrible fate against the dreaded "Other Eye". Your perspective broke down because of it, and that's likely the source for why you felt weird about this one.

A good way to check for this is to Mirror your drawing as you work. As you draw you'll find yourself making simple perspective errors without noticing it. Mirroring the drawing gives you a fresh perspective you didn't have before, and will help you find those errors. This works for physical drawings too. Hold your drawing up to a light and flip it over to 'mirror' it, or hold it up to an actual mirror.

Other than that though, I like this one. Good color selection and cute character design. She certainly seems tense. Again, the biggest mistake here really was just getting one eye wrong. Perspective is hard even for pros. I mean, look at Liefeld messing up Captain America's chest >.>

I use something entirely over-engineered for my needs, but one day it might pay for itself. It's the Wacom Cintiq Pro 24. I suggest not looking it up unless you want to deal psychic damage to yourself. Honestly any Apple tablet with a pen would be fine, especially for hobbyists. I am hoping to make this be not a hobby in the future, so Hopefully it becomes a wise purchase.

She looks scared more than sour-faced, but such is life. It's a rather challenging facial expression. This character comes from anime called shirobako. A fun anime about anime production. It doesn't give you many looks into how to animate, but rather helping you understand what everyone's role in the industry is. A good educational show for people who like anime.

As a personal challenge to myself, I've been trying to avoid profile shots. Always draw the whole body, make sure both hands and feet are visible. They're hard to draw but I won't get better at them if I avoid it. Today I was feeling lazy though, so a bust is all we get.

Day 12: Roof

If there's a consistent problem I have it's having my hands look decent while also being the correct angle. The girl's entire right arm and hand look more of a problem then I hoped. Then again, changing the angle of the hand might make the arm look correct by itself. Well, I was getting tired and fixing that at this point would be a pain. I should try harder to look for flaws before I 'finish'. I actually didn't finish the guy's hair either.
