Skipping ahead to day 24: Extinct

I drew this for a topic on Ask the Mods.

It relates to Extinct because [Nier Automata Spoilers] Humans are extinct and only the androids are left but they think humans are on the moon.

I love it! The shading and colour is probably the best for this picture in my opinion!

Day 14, Tick. I don't know why I went so overboard with this one. Probably because I didnt want to draw a simple tick.

Day 14: Tick.

I didn't really wanna do this one. I considered Tick (Tock), but I already did a time one, so I pretty my still life skills (aka looking at Google Images and trying to copy one I saw). Then to be different I used a different brush on the tick itself. I don't think the shading is very consistent at all, which makes it kinda bad to look at.

Day 15: Helmet

To be a bit different (and lazy), I decided to just color it in straight from the sketch, and see if I could get it looking decent from there. It helped that helmets are super simple if you want them to be. Its messy, but that's sorta the point.

I seem to have fallen into some kind of slump. Here's an attempt to break that. It's okay. I like the concepts behind the armor here but it's not terribly well implemented. Otherwise I don't think this is too bad, all things considered. This time it's an original character.

Day 16: Compass

I feel like my drawing process is really suboptimal, and I end up leaving a lot of gaps in my work because of it. It's also telling that I don't feel super comfortable correcting mistakes after a certain point. Arguably this shouldn't be an issue in digital. I can hammer out the mistakes before I really start doing it seriously, and if I used layers properly, minor mistakes can be easily fixed without much effort.

Still, it was kinda fun to do this one. Speaking of layers, I did play around with them a good bit.

There's a YouTube channel called Doki Doki Drawing that had some great advice. Your eyes will level up faster than your hands. At first, your eyes (the ability to visualize shapes and forms in your head, your ability to spot mistakes, your ability to understand other artist's techniques) will be something like level 5. But your hands (your actual ability to produce art) will be level 1. Over time and with lots of practice, you level your hands up to 5. Only to find your eyes are now level 10.

In short, all of those things you're currently worried about will be corrected so long as you keep practicing. However, by the time you stop making those simple mistakes or get over being lazy about those corrections, you'll find yourself making newer, higher leveled mistakes.

Day 16 - Riko's Star Compass, from Made in Abyss. I'm actually very pleased with this one. Riko's costume is rather elaborate, but it uses mostly simple shapes that are really fun to break down and analyze. For some reason I can't help but have challenging ideas I want to execute. It's actually a bit frustrating, today I just wanted to draw a normal compass, but instead I thought Riko's would be much cooler, and it wasn't long before I added Riko herself into it.

Day 17: Collision.

I want to say I've said this before, perhaps in the previous topic, but I really think I should get a male and female physical model to use. Online models feel so tough to handle, to the point I didn't wanna bother with it, but getting the correct pose is pretty tough if there's no easy reference. As I'm typing this, I realize I didn't even give any detail to the guy's face. >_> I always get preoccupied with the harder bits of a piece, that I don't handle the more glaring flaws. Could be worse I suppose.

I actually did have another idea for Collision, probably would've enjoyed it more and it would've been easier, but eh, I suppose it's not a bad thing to do something harder, even if the end product is lesser. Since we want to learn.

I've never found the posable figurines useful, personally. I just construct from basic shapes. Experimentation with these forms results in discovering poses. I've reached a point where I can, with some regularity, make poses from imagination alone. Though keeping references handy is always ideal. It can be hard to find just the right pose reference, but ideally these simple building blocks allow me to combine multiple poses into the one I wish to make.

I had an idea for Collide but I'm busy today. I'll do a double for tomorrow, probably. Though I'm still missing 2, 4, 12-14 I think.

Day 18 - Moon: This is part of the boxart for a little game called 'The Liar Princess and the Blind Prince'. It's a charming game. The Monster has two forms, a Princess and a Wolf. As the Princess she can hold the Blind Prince's hand and guide him through the perilous forest and try to find a witch who will cure his blindness. As the Wolf she can defeat all the monsters standing in her way. It's essentially one giant escort mission, so it's honestly not that fun to play, but the art style is super charming and it wears it's symbolism on its sleeve. The same button that the wolf uses to attack is the same button as the princess' hand-holding. This is intentionally meant to cause you to accidentally kill the prince. A metaphor for the Liar Princess deceiving him about her true nature.

Again, rather boring to actually play, but very cute.

Day 19: Loop

This one is kinda frustrating, cause getting some of the curves isnt really hard at all, but then you have to double up on the curve, and thats hard. Itd probably be pretty simple on a digital format, but this felt like a pen and paper sort of thing, even if the quality suffered for it.

Shit, I've taken on a big project with this drawing. I've put in so much more effort than I was supposed to for the "sprout" day. Now its become something totally different I don't even think its going to be that anymore. Also I wont have time to finish the drawings today meaning I'm gonna be behind three drawings I need to do tomorrow including this one ugh.

Well, I just hope this drawing turns out good. Its looking nice so far.

Day 22: Leak

So the shading is pretty much backwards. When I was doing the faucet, the top lines ended up thicker, and that's annoying to fix. Pretend there's a lightbulb in the sink >_>. Also there's a whole extra part at the bottom, which I ended up cutting off because the file size was too big. Probably better this way, in terms of composition.

My last post is the 2nd time I've messed up the days, putting 22 for 23. Anyway, it's a mammoth. I'd imagine dinosaurs would be a relatively common subject for this one. I like mammoths so I went ahead and did it. Not gonna say it looks great, but surprisingly I feel like the shagginess of the mammoth lends itself to be generous with how you draw it.
