If he had been asked to make new pieces for the gallery, fair.

Since the agreement was to recreate two paintings he previously did, he ought to return the money.

I have no problem with artistic statements but it sounds like they gave him a very specific brief and he didn't even try to get close to it, so not fair, not next.

Although reading the rest this is actually really funny

I think that if some of the money he was given was specifically to go in the frames as a part of the artwork, then that should be returned, as it's probably more like a loan of materials for the artist, but I have no problem with him keeping the extra they paid him. This piece is going to be far more famous and generate more foot traffic for the museum than the original plans if only due to the publicity it's drawing, and to be honest if the museum don't seem too annoyed by it then fair play to all involved.

The contract says he has until January 16 to return the money. I wonder if he did this intentionally as a joke and is planning to give the money back much earlier.

Considering that charlatans like Pablo Picasso and Vincent Van Gogh are lauded as "brilliant visionaries" or whatever the fuck, this is surprising to you?

I dunno, I kinda doubt it. Attention, yes. But what's to say that the attention will result in more foot traffic? As someone who visits Denmark from time to time, I really liked his stunt but I'm not remotely more interested in seeing the exhibit.

I remember thinking way back in college that someone passing off a blank canvas as 'art' would be the death of modern art. But then again, I highly doubt this is the first time someone has attempted this.

It's art. The same as a turd on a stick or a banana taped to a wall. An artist just has to slap a deeper meaning on an empty bottle filled with air and it's art. This artist saw the scam and profited.

I've seen a canvas that was painted over with some kind of clear paint so it looked blank but there was actually a painting you could feel if you touched it. I thought that was kinda cool.

It's art.
Back in the day, people didnt have cameras, so artwork served a much different purpose. Nowadays, being able to show someone a building from halfway around the world in full color & perfect detail is just not nearly impressive. I can look up 100x the content of any gallery of antuiquity on my phone. And the pictures will be real. Its just lost its meaning in that regard.

Art is fantastic for showing people things which dont exist; such as fantastical landscapes, or scenes from a story.

Sending a message is no more the point of art than it is any other endeavor where people choose to make their mark Upon the earth

I once went to an exposition of some artists. One of them had a room with only a bunch of wooden beams strewn randomly across the floor. You had to go from one end of the room to the other, not touching the beams. Wasn't that hard, but sometimes you had to do a twistery kind of move so your foot wouldn't touch the wooden beam. That was it.
The meaning behind it was 'to show the struggle people have to make ends meet, how they overcome obstacles' etc.

This guy just threw a bunch of wooden beams on the ground and slapped some meaning on it. And people ate it up.
