It just dawned on me the other day that I'm sick of Covid and it seems like the pandemic has been going on forever.
I have my third shot scheduled January 10th. Wearing a mask everywhere is kind of annoying.
Is this really just how it is until the day we all die?

It'll be like this until it morphs into a variant that's not too serious, or kills us. Beating it, at this point, seems impossible, with the amount of morons that refuse to take it seriously.

A flu that kills you as soon as you turn 50. It's basically Logan's Run, but with coughing.

Well we could get rid of it, but the gov, and people would hate how it would be done.
A one month, no one is allowed to leave their homes for any reason. Expect for emergency reasons.

Have the army deliver food to peoples doorsteps so everyone has food, pause the economy by making all debt related things, and rent not having to be paid that one month. No travel between anywhere, except places there are no active cases. Also mass testing of everyone at the 3 week mark of lockdown.

The chance to eliminate it completely was like January 2020. No country instituted a shutdown policy serious enough to combat it, except ironically for China.

There's no way to take it seriously enough to actually make it vanish. The whole world would have needed to shut down and quarantine at the start, and even that might not have been enough, especially with the logistical issues involved (ie, peoples' access to food, drink, medicine).

Doubt that would do much except temporarily delay the spread. If it comes back up again are you just going to shut down for another month? How many times are you willing to do this?

It'll eventually peter out, but it might take a couple more years. Unfortunately, the modern ease of mass travel makes communicable viruses a whole different beast than they used to be in regards to spreading mutations.

And China hasn't eliminated it either, since they had an outbreak in one of their regions a few days ago (can't remember its name) and shut down everything there. They're doing massive testing, etc. in that region at present.

I personally think Covid is going to be around for the next decades and longer because there seems to be new variants all the time.

That there still is a lot of new research being planned. Which does suggest an expectation that it remains relevant for many more years.

China unironically was the only country to take it seriously.

Dude, it is literally the deadliest plague we've had in the last 100 years going by deaths over time (and if you go by raw deaths, the only thing that passes it is the HIV/AIDS pandemic, which has killed six times as many people... but took 15 times as long to do it).

The only way to stop it is to get rid of all the people taking it seriously, which we cant just get rid of people.

Probably was a typo but it's actually accurate. You could get rid of everyone taking it seriously and it would be effectively gone as far as the public reaction to it goes...the same as getting rid of it really.

You could also get rid of the people not taking it seriously... It would go away eventually but probably take longer. Measures taken would have to keep being revamped as they wouldn't work for most of the first few attempts. Media would have to stop talking about it after a couple of years had passed.

First option is just faster.

Feel free to talk with actual Chinese people if you'd like, there are literally a billion of them and many live outside of China. But if you prefer to "think for yourself", try thinking about how instituting policies that minimize community spread will minimize community spread.

To be clear, COVID will not be eliminated unless every country decides to simultaneously institute massive Chinese scale shutdowns. The nature of a virus is such that you can't eliminate it in one state or country and expect that to work. It needs to be stamped out everywhere or it will just come back.

Some preliminary data is suggesting that it's generally a milder illness, but it's still too soon to say anything really definitive. Even if it does turn out to be, though, it's VASTLY more contagious and is pretty readily able to infect non-boosted vaccinated people (the booster helps, but it's not a guarantee), so it may yet result in more overall hospitalizations/deaths even though the rate is lower. Many regions have absolutely shattered the case number records they set during the third wave, which was driven by Delta being particularly contagious and low vaccination rates, so beating those records is a pretty big deal.

It's objectively the most deadly public health crisis in a century. Idiots love to fixate on the personal safety angle by spouting the low mortality rate (though a 1.6% chance to *die* is actually extremely high), but it spreads readily enough to more than make up for that.

There's an argument to be made fhat we're effectively dragging it out with all these preventative measures. If we had resumed life as normal, it's possible it would've burned itself out by now

I find it funny that people are like "do you REALLY trust anything coming out of China" as if China is sealed off like North Korea.

We knew of the very first COVID cases in Wuhan in 2019 but people seriously believe they've been concealing massive COVID outbreaks for two years.

If you don't actually have any knowledge of China or interaction with Chinese people it looks bad to repeatedly draw attention to it. You can easily look up information on how China has been dealing with COVID even though you can't obtain accurate nation wide numbers.

I work with Chinese people on a daily basis at my job lol. And one of them would tell me China was lying about their outbreaks
