Yeah that was always a weird design choice and one of the reasons I'm not as bothered by Depp getting the boot as I should be, getting Mads Mikkelson as a replacement is a definite improvement and if his portrayal in Hannibal is anything to go by he can definitely handle the charismatic and manipulative tendencies Grindelwald is supposed to have.
