Dark Souls for now. That game gets a lot of 'status symbol' votes, so even if Elden Ring gets a higher playrate on GameFAQs (which is debatable) I'm not sure Elden Ring would be stronger. Plus Elden Ring needs time to settle regardless, it won't be at peak strength here for at least a year.

well deserved. they ran a good marketing campaign (paying to put GRRM's name on it was smart), the timing was good, and the game is good. making it explicitly open world really increased the accessibility

Souls games appear to have decent legs. At least from what I'm finding I get a few figures:

• Dark Souls 3 sells 3 million in 2 months
• By 2020 (4 years later) it's sold 10 million
• Also in 2020, the Dark Souls series as a whole (including DS1 Remastered) has sold 27 million units. So we are probably on pace to get half of the entire Souls series sales relatively soon.

Not exactly anywhere near CoD numbers as a series since those come out yearly. Still very impressive on an individual level.

I'll never buy a copy.

Black Ops Cold War did 5.7 million digital (which will be a majority of total sales) in six weeks, and made $678 million (so the equivalent of 11 million copies sold but it will be lower than that). Vanguard did significantly less than that. This is more than that including physical in a third of the time. Modern Warfare 2019 was huge but otherwise Elden Ring is absolutely bigger than most recent CoD launches. If this game holds like Dark Souls III it will be one of the highest selling games of all time and could even outsell every CoD. This is an absolutely enormous launch.

It gets confusing because the "best-selling game" stuff is for America, not the whole world. I would expect that CoD games are much more America-centric than Elden Ring is.

Also, a lot of publishers do not provide full information to NPD. Most notably, Nintendo does not provide digital numbers to third parties. So while NPD had Black Ops Cold War as the highest selling game of 2020 for North America, that has a massive asterisk next to it because Animal Crossing had no digital data counted and if it did it would have been the number one game fairly comfortably.

Also the 5.7 million is digital only, from the dollar gross the total sales are likely in the 10-11 million range, which for six weeks about lines up as roughly equal to Valhalla for two months. I know in some markets like the UK Valhalla definitely outsold Black Ops Cold War (and Elden Ring is outselling Valhalla). So I can see those as comparable.

The wild thing on the subject of Nintendo is, Elden Ring likely isnt even the biggest launch of the year because of Legends Arceus. It is mid-March and there have already been two all-time level launches. And there has also been a Horizon game and a Gran Turismo game released! Its going to be a huge year.

Arceus only did 6.5 million in its first two weeks. Elden Ring sales are way beyond recent Pokemon games.

Pokmon won't sell as much as Elden Ring??? You are aware that any sales numbers for Pokmon don't include digital right? And the digital/physical split these days is somewhere around 70/30 so Pokmon is most likely already ahead of Elden Ring and is guaranteed to stay that way.

Normal trends with Pokemon indicate that because PLA isnt a new region or a paired version, it probably won't beat Sword/Shield, especially not with SV coming to remove its legs in November.

Just two? I think Lost Ark and Dying Light 2 both did 5 million plus as well.

Oh yeah Elden Ring does have the huge advantage of multiplatform, I forget that makes a big difference.

Serious Smash answer: The Tarnished would probably be the rep.

If we were to imagine the Tarnished as a Smash character, it could be fun to have different "modes" for the character which you could switch between - like Pokmon Trainer.

It even makes sense in-universe: by pressing e.g. down+B, the character uses a Larval Tear and respecs from a strength build to a dex, int or faith build, with a different moveset for each.
