For me, personally, it would be the Sega Saturn, no question. As a wee lad, I saved up lots of dollar bills and quarters and anything I could get my hands on to be able to afford it. For the first time ever, I bought a video game system with my own money, no help from my parents. And why did I want a Sega Saturn so badly? For Sonic games, of course! I got Sonic R...

And that was it.

Sonic Jam was just a compilation of Genesis games I already owned, and I had the Genesis version of 3D Blast as well, so R was all the Sonic I got on the Saturn. The Saturn came with a few free games, but I hardly played those: games like Virtua Fighter 2 weren't up my alley. And while I'd heard Croc: Legend of the Gobbos was good, I didn't think it could hold a candle to Super Mario 64.

How sad. But I guess, at the tender age of... seven, I think... I learned a lesson about making informed purchases.

I'm glad the black-and-red aesthetic of Virtual Boy games creeped me out: I dodged a bullet there, at least.

Anyway, what's the most disappointing system you have ever gotten?

Yeah, I could imagine being disappointed by the Saturn. I've been inspecting a lot of game libraries lately, and while there's a few gems there...it's pretty sparse.

No real big disappointments for me. Kind of stuck to Nintendo most of my life, but I snagged a PS2 a few years ago.

Wii U

Got one for cheap in time for Sm4sh, but ended up hating Sm4sh.

Then I got Xenoblade Chronicles X. Initially it was kinda ok, and I dropped it after 100ish hours. I came back and restarted it, and I ended up really enjoying it despite my gripes. Put in another 230 hours.

After that I didn't really care what the Wii U had to offer, so I sold it in exchange for a PS4.

Probably going to annoy a lot of people with this, but the Dreamcast. The "must have" games are all ported to better systems, or they kind of suck. Additionally, the system feels cheaply made and the fact that it has no copy protection just makes it feel like an afterthought.

Never owned a Virtual Boy, because I rented one and it made me avoid it entirely. Other then that, I pretty much enjoyed ever Nintendo system I owned. I will admit the N64 was the least interesting since I only cared about a handful of games, and I liked the games I had for the GameBoy, but handheld gaming never appealed to me.

I almost got a Saturn, because my cousin was going off to college and wanted to sell it off for money, but I decided against buying it at the time. Kind of wish I did given how rare they are nowadays.

I never got a N64, otherwise it'd be that...

Wii U I wish Nintendo hadn't killed so fast, but it gave me Xenoblade X, Bayonetta 2, BotW, Hyrule Warriors, and a bunch of other great games so I was overall happy w/ it.

I guess PS4 since that's the console when Sony decided to become evil and start censoring games (and also join MS's evil in making you pay for online).

I've never actually been disappointed by any console I've ever owned. When I was a kid my parents always got me the console I wanted (ColecoVision, NES, SNES), and once I started buying my own I only ever bought ones I liked (PS1, PS2, PS4, Xbox, 360). I've always been happy with what I get because I've almost always been aware enough to always look before I leap, and not get sucked up in stupid pre-release hype for shit that winds up being a waste.

If I bend my own rule (that handhelds are not consoles), then my default answer is the GameBoy Advance SP. Because I probably played it less than 10 hours total. The only games I ever bought for it (LoZ1, FF1&2, Deja Vu 1&2, Broken Sword 1) were mostly titles that were available on other systems, and I kind of hate handheld gaming in general, so it always felt like a waste of my time. So I dabbled a bit but never really felt like I got any real enjoyment out of it.

Outdated hardware even at launch, awful graphics, awful gimmick, rampant piracy because Nintendo learned NOTHING from the DS. I only ever purchased 3 games for it and only played 2 of them. Almost didn't buy a Switch because of it.

I loved my Saturn(s)

The King of Fighters games, Burning Rangers, the Virtua games, Virtual On with the Twin Sticks, Capcoms 2d fighters that played way better than they did on the PSX.. good times :)

I'd have to go with the Switch, yesterday's games, yesterday's hardware, paid online service, poor internal storage (why the hell should I go out and buy a bigger memory card?), system update after system update.. oof

I don't think any system has ever really disappointed me. The WiiU is probably the closest to qualifying, given that it didn't last a full generation and had so little overall support, but even then it had plenty of games that I loved and I don't regret getting it at all.

The Saturn was pretty awesome in retrospect. But I can see not appreciating it so much if I was a young kid in the 90s with little to no disposable income or knowledge of the system.

The only system that I think may have been close to a disappoint to me was the PS3. The PS1 and PS2 are my favorite consoles, and then the PS3 was just okay.... I still played plenty of games on it and I certainly don't regret buying one, but it just didn't have the same impact on me as it's predecessors. I also was a huge fan of the DS3. I honestly liked the DS4 more.

Definitely the Wii. The only game I played seriously on it was a re-release of a game I had already beaten many times (Resident Evil 4). I tried Twilight Princess, and wasn't a fan. Nothing else on the console really interested me. Now it just sits there gathering dust.

Dreamcast. I was probably disappointed because I got it long after most games worth playing on it got better versions on newer consoles and PC. And I hate the controller with a fucking passion. Mushy ass buttons and d-pad, analog stick that twists and has a shitty grip, and the worst placement of the triggers on any controller ever made. It's like they were placed there for people with 1 inch fingers or 4 inch thumbs. The VMU is kinda cool, but fuck them for choosing CR2032 batteries rather than AAA batteries. The batteries die quickly and they're are overpriced. But at least I made sure to get an early model, so I can easily run homebrew on it.

Wii-U. I remember walking into Bestbuy on launch day morning and not seeing a single ninty fan inline/in store to get the new system. Normally theyd have a line outside and raffle tickets etc but nope. Dead cold silent. Couldn't even tell a new nintendo console just launched. It was really depressing.

I got home and fired up New Super Mario Bros Wii U and fell in love with the 2d side scroller. I enjoyed the tablet and nintendoland was alright. Played Madden and expected next gen graphics but got something that felt low tech. Idk it was just a uneasy launch for me

Vita had a lot of good games and cool features, but you're right that Sony was the main reason it failed. They should have seen the writing on the wall and DEEPLY discounted the system and its accessories (charging cables were way overpriced and memory sticks were ridiculous).

If they could have moved more units, they could have encouraged more devs to work on Vita exclusives.
