I don't have as much love for Staff Roll as I think a lot of people do (and have an inordinate amount of love for PC-98 stuff in general, particularly Umemoto's stuff. That bass! That buildup! The track dynamics! The line starting at 2:14!)

Really love what Mighty Magma Red's doing. Very tense, but not unpleasant to listen to at all. Terra's Theme (aside from being burned into the back of my brain) makes me want to break out my viola and play the melody real badly though, which is a big point in my book. Would love to see both these tracks move on.

I feel like I'm missing something with 46-:ri9- it's been growing on me, though, so if I keep hearing it maybe that'll change. It's a good track, (although it's got this whole start/stop thing going on that I'm not a fan of at all) but I don't find it gripping enough to beat the infectious fun that is Egg Reverie.

First match could go either way. Both are fine enough I GUESS. Match 2 is better though. I've always liked Terra to the point it used to be one of my favorite FF tracks! It's not that high up anymore, but it's still some good shit. Mighty Magma Red is cool as fuck though. Has a Genesis sound to it, but they didn't crunch it up enough for my liking.

Match 2 definitely a toss up. Match 1, though, is the big surprise for me. I didnt listen to it at all throughout noms, but I rather liked it tonight!

Apologies to the FFVI fans though, as it's one of my least favorite in the series even if the music is spot on.

Yeah, Bracket A >> Bracket B. A 6.5 is 45th place in Bracket B, but that would be 57th place (give or take one) in Bracket B! (though Terra I underrated) If all the brackets were like A I would've considered the field to be the best ever. Bracket A has a 7.9 average, Bracket B has a 7.23 average, and Bracket C has a 7.78 average. I've yet to rate everything in D.

VGMC actually got me to watch the recent YU-NO anime adaptation. It was okay. Wish it had music like this.
Man it's weird seeing something like Staff Roll in VGMC - I've heard the song plenty just from watching Mario 64 runs and the like but never gave much thought into it as a musical piece. It's very happy.
Terra is a song I struggle to take seriously for a few reasons, but setting them all aside it's a perfectly pleasant tune.
I'm not the best at identifying composers in general but after about 30 seconds of listening to Mighty Magma Red in the background I was like "wait this is Yasui isn't it". Anyway I like Yasui

I don't know exactly what the mechanic behind it is, but in Terra there's something about how the guitar samples interact with the instruments that give it this weird watery drippy sound in the first half of the song and I've always liked that for some reason

Different World has a really cool beat and feel to it. It's not something I'll ever come back to, but if I was playing a game with this song playing, I definitely wouldn't mind. 6/10

Staff Roll is uh... not my thing. I'm usually a big supporter of pretty simple tracks, but this just doesn't do it for me at all. Mario music in general usually isn't really my thing. Give me Zelda any day over Mario. 3/10

Woo! One of my favorite Final Fantasy tracks! Minor is love, minor is life. People need to realize that simple things can just be so dang awesome. You don't need 100 million different things happening in a track for it to just be fantastic. Great stuff. 9/10

Mighty Magma Red is actually pretty decent. Catchy beat and just overall pretty fun. It doesn't do quite enough for me to love it but has some very cool parts. Too bad it's up against Terra because it would probably beat 95% of the rest of the bracket. 7/10

Egg Reverie ~ Extra Boss Theme... there are some Sonic Mania tracks that I absolutely adore. This is not one of them. It's really just not my thing. Too chaotic and I really really don't care for the melody at all. Titanic Monarch when? 2.5/10

46-:ri9... This is boring. I really don't have much to say about it. The "epic" parts or whatever are just uh... I just don't care in the slightest. Nothing about this excites me in any way at all. 2/10

I tend to really like "happy yet wistful" music, and few songs encapsulate that feeling for me than Super Mario 64's Staff Roll. Kondo is at his best here.

As round 1 of Bracket A comes to a close, it's worth noting that four of my top six have already made an appearance! Bracket A is pretty stacked.

I like the atmosphere and soundscape of Different World 1 more than I did when I initially listened to it. Cool synths and melody in the second half of the loop especially. Not a fan of the intro of this one though. It's otherwise a solid song.

Staff Roll is a very nice song. Certainly not a favorite, but it does what it's trying to do very well. Good melodies, nice instrumentation, good progression, etc. Different World did make this match a bit harder for me, but I think I'm still leaning a bit more in Staff Roll's direction. The key change towards the end of Staff Roll is very nice as well.

Terra's Theme is a classic. Great, iconic melody. The main flute is great. It does get a bit repetitive, but it's fine for the most part. This one pretty easily wins this match.

Mighty Magma Red has a pretty good melody, but I'm not really a fan of the instrumentation used (this is the case with most Yasui music tbh). Not much else to say about this one. I can see why some people really like it though.

Opinion remains unchanged on the tiebreaker.

Match 1 places a good solid mid-upper tier song against an all timer. I love the ethereal spaciness of Different World and the rich sound, but damn, I feel I ought to be thanking Mario for this banger of a track. SM64 music never gets old to me, despite watching speedruns of it fairly regularly.

I was ready to betray my support for Mighty Magma, until I got to the part right before the loop. Holy shit this match is close. Terra is so good at placing me into a certain place at a certain time. This isn't one of Uematsu's best just because it sounds good. It really is special.

Egg Reverie is still solid, but 46-:ri9 is still even cooler.

The only thing I get out of Staff Roll is a bit of empty nostalgia, I don't think the song itself is particularly interesting. And maybe this is sacrilegious but I don't care for the 'sound' of SM64's music, it's all canny or somethin. Different World is reasonably cool.
Mighty Magma is fun, but Terra is on another level. It starts with such a killer hook and I like how it adds in the layers from there. Love how it loops too. And this isn't nostalgia for me, I only played FFVI for the first time last year.

Terra won't stop being good, no matter how many times it unnecessarily gets into the contest. Mighty Magma Red is pretty cool though! Reminds me of an SRW song or Gallant Gunshot or something. *Checks* oh it's yasui that's why lol
