#7 - Patch

For some reason, despite Patch being this high on my list, I'm struggling with what to say about him. Patch is just... Patch. He's hard to explain, but he's lovable. Loyal. The best friend you could ask for. Optimistic and relatively care-free. Naive, but in a charming loveable way.

He's also Artemis... I mean, Data 7's best friend and has been for as long as I know about! Trish, Field's sister, built Patch a voice box so that everyone could talk to him. It's hard to remember a time that Patch couldn't talk to all of us. Here's the first thing Patch said when he first starting wearing his voice box:

"It feels like I'm wearing a hat! Cheezy Crackah! But it's okay. Is that a thimble? I like thimbles. Do all thimbles have holes is that what makes a thimble a It's really easy I just have to think and do thimbles come without holes or would that make them just cu- I know who Trish is now we talked about how I'm Patch but thimbles are Cheezy Crackah! I'm so hungry she thinks I'm Sir Frederick it's a funny name. No, it doesn't hurt at Cheezy Crackah! My tummy is rumbling, it must mean I need to oh okay I'll hop on, oh that light is blinking red, I wonder why-"

It takes Patch a while to understand the difference between picking what is said through the voice box and just verbalizing every thought that pops into his head. And Patch has a lot of thoughts. A lot of plans. That's why he's the leader of Big Troubles, the animal gang (with eventually member Vicki Vale, maybe?!) that Artemis is a part of. He negotiated directly with Amanda Waller for them to have their own base and a mission which is quite the feat.

One of my favorite Patch moments was a lingering questions after campaign 1. Riev, an assassin with light manipulation powers, constantly was finding flashlights left on his doorstep. He had a whole collection of them in his closet, but the campaign ended witout us ever figuring out who was leaving them. Turns out, it was Patch. He knew Riev liked light, so Riev must like hundreds of flashlights. But Riev never thanked Patch for this, so now Riev is Patch's enemy.

Patch is terrible at remembering to not call Data 7 Artemis. He slips up on this a lot. The first time he slipped up to Brennus, he covered his tracks perfectly.

"Rover! He's a dog, like Artemis! Oops! I meant Data 7. Not Artemis! Data 7. My footpad. I don't even know an Artemis. There isn't one. That's a name I made up, like Irgolgroo! I just made it up, promise, Brennus!"

Patch also thought that poor Varra and Vertigo were destitude, broke, had so little to their name! Because they slept in the same bed. They couldn't even afford a second bed! How sad is that?

Patch loves playing hide and seek with Starsa. Brennus enjoys playing with them as well, even if he's a lot worse at it considering he's remarkably bigger than both of them.

Hopefully my ramblings here have given some insights into who Patch is. He's just lovable. How could anyone not love him?

Hint for #6: It's getting hard to write hints that doesn't just give away who's next! Let's see... this person has a sound effect that I associate with them. That's probably a bad hint. BUT OH WELL.

To celebrate the approaching end of No Man's Land, and thus campaign 1, we had a massive RP that boiled down to 'stream of consciousness nonsense'. In that we kept calling Patch Parch for...reasons. It just started and thus we kept doing it.

I had a group chat conversation like that once. A lot of fun at the time but to an outside person just bizarre nonsense that doesn't seem nearly as funny as everyone involved felt it was.

I do not believe this is Snapper. I'd go so far as to say there's not a chance.

This is probably just like, Thinker, and MI is referring to the Snap Zone audio.

#6 - Amanda Waller

I feel like Scar has typed a line similar to the above constantly. And it's become ingrained in my mind. Whenever I picture Waller's office, I can hear the ticking within.

Waller had a huge inflence on Brennus' childhood. Scar described her once as Brennus' longest term babysitter. Despite the timeline aging Brennus up inbetween campaigns, I still picture him in the 8-10 age range when the Suicide Squad rescued him and Amanda Waller agreed to keep him safe until Varra was able to get him again. Waller is a bitch, I don't think anyone will disagree with me saying that. She gets things done and she's not afraid of hurting feelings in the process of getting things done. But she has a weak spot for children. When this event first happened in campaign 1, with the majority of my exposure to Waller being the Suicide Squad movie, I was surprised that she would care for Brennus. But as the campaigns have progressed, it made more and more sense to me. She's a mother at heart, even if her children are dead now, it's not something you ever stop being. It drives who she is and I think she would sacrifice a lot to keep a child safe. We recently (literally this week) rescued four babies from a prision. I would not be surprised to find Waller holding them and caring for them at some point down the line. This soft spot also came into play when Spirit needed a rare blood type to perform a surgery on a child. There was an announcement to attempt to find anyone with this blood type and almost instantaneously, Amanda Waller was there with her sleeve rolled up, ready to help out. The fate of the world rests on her shoulders, but at that moment nothing was more important to her than saving a child's life.

I think she has a soft spot for most, if not all, of the field agents. There are certainly moments in her conversations with us where the facade slips a bit and the concern comes out. She's not the same nurturing figure that Oracle was, but that's okay. No one expects her to be. But she still sees what we need and intercedes when needed. After returning from Bahdnisia, Brennus was in a bad place mentally. He still is. Waller decided to promote Data 7 and Brennus to a higher rank in Checkmate but she only informed Data 7 of this. She recognized that Brennus wasn't in the right headspace to be informed of his promotion yet and that it would have to wait for another time. I have a scene in mind that I want to play out where she likely will tell him - and I want to attempt something in that scene that I'm not sure how Waller will react to.

Brennus has admitted to Waller that he wants to kill Whisper if he runs into her in the field. Waller told him that there are other ways to make our enemies suffer and showed him a Suicide Squad collar. This was before a party met Whisper in the field and made allies of her. The party will be heading to Mammoth City to meet up with her again soon, and Brennus is struggling at what to do. Does he keep in her play as an ally for the party, does he pursue a personal vendetta or does he go along with Waller's play? Another thing he wants to talk to her about in advance of heading to Mammoth City.

In the same conversation, she asked Brennus for a favor. That when he has the opportunity to do so, that he kills Lex Luthor. Amanda Waller was part of his administration when he was the President and she has a vendetta of her own against him now. She asks Brennus not to inform any of the other field agents that she asked him of this and Brennus agrees to that as well. Brennus has a distrust of authority, but that never carries over to Amanda Waller. She is the one who was responsible for saving his life when he was a child. She was the one who cared for him when Varra was unable to. When Brennus was having nightmare about what Whisper did to him and in front of him, Waller let Brennus crawl into bed with her at night, holding him while he cried. He would follow Amanda Waller and her Checkmate organization to the ends of the Earth and he quite literally is doing so as a field agent. If she needs something from Brennus, she knows that all she has to do is ask. Brennus will follow through, no questions asked.

Waller does still have a side of tough love with those that she favors. Varra was notoriously too trusting, a topic I touched upon in my write-up for Captain Cold. Waller didn't want Brennus to fall into the same traps, so when Thinker was pulling a prank on Brennus, as he has done with so many, Waller made sure that it went a little further. Brennus ended up getting in quite a bit of trouble when he unhooked The Thinker, turning off Z'onn Z'orr's protections temporarily. The Thinker after denied that he played any role in tricking Brennus into doing this and had faked video of Brennus claiming that he was going to kill The Thinker for refusing to help him find his father. Waller acted disappointed in Brennus' actions, but she later confided in Rosetta that Brennus didn't to learn a lesson - that when someone betrays you, you remember it. Brennus doesn't know Waller's goal, but it's a lesson that he has still taken to heart.

I think I might have ranked her too low after doing this write-up. Alas.

Amanda Waller is such a nuanced character, I think she has been one of my favorite writeups on each list.

#5 - Blue Beetle (Jaime Reyes)

Jaime is a newer hero - we were there for his first moments as the Blue Beetle when Jaime Reyes, a coyote who worked to get people into Juarez, bonded with Khaji Da, an alien scarab and became the Blue Beetle. He was terrified and confused, and Khaji Da quickly asserted dominance over him, causing him to attack Rosetta instantly. We were able to calm down Khaji Da and over time, him and Jaime has reached a bit of a compromise in control over his body. Sure, there's still the occasionally cannons getting charged and pointed at people that Khaji Da views as a threat, but they almost never actually get shot...

Brennus and Pepper both bonded with Jaime when he returned to Z'onn Z'orr, both with a bit of a crush on him. Jaime quickly made it apparent that he was not gay and Brennus is content being Jaime's friend, even if they do fight occasionally. Jaime seems to have the most tradition view of good vs evil - there's a lot of villains in Brennus' orbit, villains that he works alongside with to try to help save the world. Jaime can't wrap his head around this. Those people are evil - how many people has Deadshot saved and now the group is going into the field with him in order to save his daughter with him? He's convinced that leopards can't change their spots and that these villains will turn on the party at the first opportunity.

Jaime's family was integral to the conclusion of El Paso. I mentioned that La Llarona's daughter, Milagro, was adopted by the Reyes family. Jaime knew his sister was adopted, but he never knew the full story of who she was. Both Brennus and Jaime were hesitant to use Milagro as a bargaining chip in this battle, but ultimately everything worked out with that and his family was brought back to Z'onn Z'orr. This story doesn't have a happy ending, at least yet however. Jaime's father fought in The Invasion against the Dominators. He has issues with aliens. He doesn't trust Rosetta and more importantly, he doesnt' trust Khaji Da. Berto is not allowing Jaime to talk to Bianca, his mother, or Milagro while Khaji Da is with him, and Khaji Da is bonded to him. Jaime argued with him and as far as I know, the family has spoken to each other since. Bianca is more conflicted about this, but is still listening to her husband and Milagro doesn't understand and misses her brother. I've wanted to try to help smooth over this situation, but I've never been sure if Brennus is the right one to attempt this. I think Brennus would just sceam at Berto and Bianca for how stupid they're being.

Between his views on villains and a fight that he got into with Pepper, which was masterfully set up by Traci 13, Jaime decided he needed to leave Z'onn Z'orr for a while. He rejoined the Convoy so that he could help his friends from El Paso make it back and feel like he was contributing something. The Convoy that was led partially by La Dama and picked up Bane along the way. I think Jaime's views since returning have shifted slightly due to him having to work with some villains, but it's still not something he enjoys. Since returning, he's been avoiding Pepper and refusing to enter Z'onn Z'orr, spending his time in the outside city of Castling instead where he has became friends with AJ and Stargirl. The group of them play a game called Annoyball where they throw a ball on top of the lighthouse that Tom Curry maintains with the goal of annoying him. But Minerva rudely put a stop to that game, since she cares for Tom or something. Lame.

Jaime also has a strained relationship with Lush. Lush, being a former super villain, has never had Jaime's trust - he often refers to her as "Harley Quinn crazy". She proved his point once by stabbing him with a sword. Oops.

Jaime is also an ally of Brennus being gay! At least, he tries to be. He unpromptedly tells anyone who will listen that Brennus is gay. He also once told Brennus his life might be easier if he could be gay. Brennus, selflessly, offered to make out with Jaime to help him with that, but he declined.

Hint for #4: This character is, or has been, a villain.

#4 - Fiddler (Isaac Bowin)

Fiddler died in week 10. This week is week 85. And yet, here he still sits near the top of my rankings. And I will not be judged for this thank you.

Fiddler was a member of the Secret Six when we first met them. He seemed to care less about the infighting and drama amongst the others members of the Six, perhaps due to his age. He didn't get involved, in fact he offered the party to take his seat at the table during one such fight, and he keptto himself. Brennus and Taliesin talked to him the night before we went to Toronto and he admitted to us that he felt he was past his prime. The Society treated him as a joke, an old man who played the fiddle and Mockingbird's offer to him was a simple one - when we take down the Society, you'll get the respect you deserve. He talked to us about his legacy, about respect and about what he'll be remembered for when he's gone.

And then, Cheshire betrayed us. She betrayed all of the members of the Secret Six - she no longer trusted Mockingbird and she believed that if she got back in with the Society, that she could rescue her child herself. And to get back in with the Society, she called a full Society cell down upon our location. They invaded the house and we fought them off - Fiddler cut one soldier in half with his music and with that we realized he wasn't the joke that others were acting like he was. Despite succesfully defending the house, we were surrounded by hundreds of grunts and some big name villains. The remaining five members of the Six and our group started trying to figure out an escape route. Our illusionist had his powers blocked by a poison Cheshire preemptively hit him with so he couldn't cover their escape. Mr. Terrible blocked our beacon so we couldn't call Snapper for an escape. What could we do? The consensus was someone would need to stay behind and cause a distraction... but who?

The Six began bickering about who was going to stay behind, all pointing fingers to someone else. Before a decision could be made, we noticed that Fiddler was missing. He slipped out the door quietly and shouts that the maestro is at his podium. This is his swan song, the most memorable performance of his life. He unleashes his sonic waves at the forces outside and they attack him back. We make our escape, hearing his music continuing to play the whole way. The silence that lingers after the music stops playing is heavy.

For someone who was worried about his name being forgotten, he ensured that he will be remembered - and not as a villain. Not for him taking over Keystone City for a decade, but for being a hero. For saving our lives at the expensive of his own. His name was the first NPC to be carved in our memorial wall.

Scar's voice broke during this scene - we could tell that he got choked up. And so did I, at the very least. I cried at this moment and I got emotional again writing this. There's a reason I can put him this high 75 weeks later. Here's to you, Fiddler.

Hint for #3: Brennus has hugged this person. And yes, this hint applies to all three of my top three.

yeah I think that one is a hindsight one. He didn't really have the potential to make my list, but if I made it today I think he would have.
