#10 - Valentina Vostok

A former member of the Doom Patrol, although she wouldn't be happy to admit it, and one of the most important personel in Checkmate, and I think she would be happy to admit that. Valentina Vostok, also known as the Negative Woman, is usually found in the Command Center, hunched over a display table and studying the designs for a fire suppressant system. Or an expansion of the city. Or a fishing dock. A basketball court. An olympic sized swimming pool. Some of these things she's quite happy to work on and others she will let you know how stupid your project is... while still making sure it's designed to the best specifications. Sometimes this even comes with a banned list. Lush was banned after building a fast food resturaunt. Minerva was banned for building Harley Quinn's therapy office. But Faster Food and Harley Quinn's thearpy office were still built! Saoirse was banned for... well, for getting drunk and passing out on the floor of the Command Center. Maybe that one is a little more understandable.

She's also the one we need to go to in order to put in requisition request for Snapper to gather for us while he's out getting supplies. For a while at the start of the campaign, the group seemed to gravitate to asking Snapper directly, breaking protocol. Partially because they were more familiar with Snapper and partially to avoid getting yelled at by Vostok for whatever item they were after and being told how useless the item was. Eventually we gravitated to following procedure, and Vostok and Brennus started to bond when Brennus asked her to gather items to put on a memorial service. Which led to the following exchange:

"You wish to spend our scarce resources to build memorials for our fallen, who will never see them?"
"I wasn't planning to build anything. But some kind of ceremony with music he would have liked. A way to remember him and the sacrifice he made for us. I believe a funeral for the fallen should still be customary."
"You would ask agents to delay their work for such a remembrance?"
"...yes?"
Vostok gives you a cold stare. Silence hangs in the air for a moment. She then leans in... and kisses you on the forehead. "You are really a very sweet boy."

Since then, Vostok's attitude towards Brennus has been a caring, motherly role. She fixes his hair, she pinches his cheeks, she makes sure that any items he requests he gets the best version of the said item. It wasn't the reaction I expected to get from her, ever, but it's made a fascinating juxtaposition between how she treats Brennus and how she treats... well, anyone else.

Negative Woman has the ability for a shadow form to exit her body and act on it's own. This shadow form has helped Brennus capture a ghost hiding out in the chapel. Vostok's body is left unconcious and defenseless when this duplicate comes out. It's quite powerful but with quite the downside. Not that Brennus would ever let anything happen to Vostok!

Hint for #9: This character has accompanied us on field missions.

#9 - Scandal Savage

The leader of the Secret Six and the member that Brennus feels that he has the best relationship with, even if that relationship began with her threatening his life. Constantly. People grow!

Scandal is the daughter of Vandal Savage and to say they don't have the best relationship would be an understatement. In fact, it is what Mockingbird was using to make sure that Scandal would remain loyal to him - if Scandal doesn't play her part, Mockingbird will tell Vandal Savage how to find Scandal. She wants to avoid this at any costs and plays along. She also, whether it's because of this threat or just who she is, seems to be the most loyal to Mockingbird. Whenever things don't go the way they have planned, Scandal remains convinced that Mockingbird knew. That Mockingbird has a plan for this possibility.

Scandal expressed distrust in Brennus on more than one occasion. She doesn't trust Vertigo and initially, he had a seat on the High Society. She worried that if he offered a hand to Brennus, he would take it and turn on their organization. She also expressed to him that he was weak and stupid. The weak part offended him more - he had been on every mission involving the Secret Six and he didn't feel his competency should be questioned. But she didn't mean weak in that sense - in the sense that he wouldn't have what it took when it came down to it.

When the team lost a couple of members and gained Parademon, there was still one opening on the team. Deadshot, Catman and Scandal all had their own idea of who we should go recruit to the Secret Six. Scandal pushed for Knockout, an Apokoliptian who would be able to be swayed against Darkseid because she views Earth as her home, not Apokolips. The catch - she's enemies with Big Barda and Scandal thinks we'd have to either capture Barda for her ahead of time or make the promise to her that we would capture Barda. The majority of us weren't onboard with her plan and recruited Bane instead. Bane and Scandal are having a bit of a power struggle for leadership of the Six right now, and in frustration Scandal told Brennus something she hadn't told the others. The reason she knew that Knockout would listen to her? They're in a relationship. She doesn't want the others to know and Brennus, of course, agreed to keep her secret, and laments that he would have pushed more for Knockout if she told him this fact ahead of time. Of course, this bonding moment ended with Scandal holding a blade to Brennus' throat when he made a joke to try to cut some tension that was not appreciated. But people grow! ...right?

I think Brennus has worn Scandal down through sheer force of will. He won't go away and he continues to play an active role in anything involving the Secret Six. I think it was a begrudging acceptance on her part, but I think that the acceptance has come, nonetheless. The Six is currently fractured, Deadshot and Catman are at an impassed in their relationship. No one seems sure how to fix things - but I suspect when I find the time to talk to Scandal, she'll have an idea in mind.

Hint for #8: No one guessed this person as being in my top 10!

#8 - Zoom (Hunter Zolomon)

I'm surprised after Inertia people didn't guess Zoom for my top 10! I guess people just assumed I preferred Inertia.

As mentioned in Inertia's write-up, Brennus' first battle with him ended quickly when Inertia called in Zoom for backup. Zoom grabbed Brennus and took him clear across the city in the blink of an eye, dangling him by his ankles high above the water separating Keystone and Central City. He seems to be pondering if he should kill Brennus or not, and Brennus point out that Zoom can't kill him - Brennus recently had met The Flash (Wally West) - briefly. He seemed to be moving backwards through time instead of forward, but he recognized Brennus and the rest of the party. Brennus points out to Zoom that this means that Brennus meets The Flash in the future, so Brennus can't be killed right now! Zoom sets Brennus down, mostly gently, so the two of them can talk.

Zoom admits he's somewhat impressed that Brennus was able to hold off Inertia and that Zoom sees a bit of himself in Brennus - someone quick-witted and honest. He sees Wally West as a God and claims that Brennus doesn't accurate understand what it means that he was visited by Wally. Zoom wants and has always wanted to make Wally faster. To make Wally stronger. But he can't while he's trapped in a civil war with Grimm over control of these two cities.

Zoom's goal is to rescue Wally from where he's trapped in the timestream. But he needs Inertia to do that and he needs Inertia to be faster. And once Wally is freed and once Zoom has made sure that Wally is as fast as he needs to be, he's planning to send Wally after Darkseid. With one punch from Wally, Darkseid can be defeated and this war can be over. Brennus hesitates, not sure if he can trust Zoom, and Zoom decides to show how to command loyalty. He pushes Brennus off the bridge and then catches him before he lands in the water. He explains that he sees some value in Brennus, but only a little, and not to test him. He hints that he knows Vertigo and departs.

The second time they meet, Brennus brings a team with him. Zoom says that he has to slow himself down 47x to even have this conversation with the group and that when he stands still having a conversation, he's vulnerable. But he doesn't fear anything - he taps Brennus on the forward and Brennus starts moving at a frame a second. He touches Brennus again, bringing him back to normal speed, explaining that everyone is connected to the Speed Force in some way.

With all the power Zoom has, I'm not entirely sure why he needs Inertia to pull Wally out of the timestream instead of doing it himself. Perhaps it's a one way trip and he's dooming poor Inertia. I do believe Zoom to be honest. He doesn't feel any fear from us, he doesn't have any reason to lie. He's whole carrer has been about strengthing Wally West and it makes sense that he would continue this. Recently, a Reverse-Flash persona inside Misty has begun to make it's presence known. It can smell Zoom on Brennus and he despises Zoom and by association Brennus. There's a story yet to be explored between the two of them. And there's a lot of story left in Keystone and Central City. Zoom hates the Rogues and the Rogues hate him. Where do we go while we're slowly allying ourselves with both sides? Zoom might be one of the biggest name villains we've encounters so far but I have no fear in working with him. We'll see where the rest of the group shakes out...

Hint for #7: I haven't actually fact checked this, but I would guess this character has been guessed the most often based off of previous hints.
