#17 - Cullen Row

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/3/0/7/AAcguBAADnCD.png

Im not entirely sure why I didnt have Harper/Cullen back-to-back. They play off each other so well that I feel like they shouldve been together, but when I made my list I thought there was enough of a difference between them to separate them with Oracle and Thom and who am I to argue with one-month-ago-MI?

We met Cullen when he was chained up by the Prime Talon in Highland Park. It seems that they wanted to turn Cullen into a Talon. I dont think we followed up on that too heavily in session, but writing this now I cant help but wonder why. Is that a normal thing that the Court of Owls do, or is there something special about Cullen to make them want to turn him into a Talon? Something to follow up on when we get back to Highland Park.

Cullen is Harpers younger brother and it showed. He quickly messed up, calling her Harper instead of Bluebird in front of us, revealing Harpers identity to us. He thinks that Bluebirds catch phrase should be Razzle Dazzle, since shes a Chicago superhero. This reference doesnt make sense to Harper, since shes never actually seen Chicago, which horrifies both Cullen and Brennus. He breaks into a song from Chess when he hears that were from Checkmate - Harper says that he does this often, but its actually been a few months since he has. It seems that our presence has made him feel a little more comfortable and at ease. Is it our presence, or just Brennus? Cullen checked out Brennus, getting fixated on his abs for a bit and Brennus flirted back a bit, telling Cullen if he comes back to Zonn Zorr with the group, Brennus can show him what kind of things Brennus is good at. Harper quickly put herself in between the two. Im not entirely sure of Cullens age which might put a damper on progressing things further with him - I asked scar how old he looked and was told mid to late teens. If he ends up being 15, Ill probably not feel comfortable progressing things further than some light flirting. If hes 16-17 well, well see where things go!

Cullen does have a more serious side. He admits that hes constantly afraid that hes going to make the mistake that leads to Harper getting killed. Hes a civilian but he feels more like a sidekick with how the world was thrust upon the two of them. If he comes back to Zonn Zorr and gets some training, I can see a world where he becomes a more official sidekick, but for now he admits that he only has stage combat training - stage combat training that he received when he played Peter Pan in a sequel musical, where he sued Captain Hook for the crimes he commited. He sang a bit of his big song from the musical Youre a crook, Captain Hook hm, why does this musical sound familiar

One last fun fact - its become a quirk of Brennus that he always has some loose Cheetos in his pocket, to munch on or to offer to share with others. While talking to Cullen, he pulled some loose chips out of his pocket. A sign that things are meant to be?!?

Hint for #16: This character played a large role in Campaign 1.

#16 - Batgirl (Stephanie Brown)

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/5/0/6/AAOJ0pAADbmy.jpg

Another character who ranks as high as they do because of campaign 1, although shes been just as great in campaign 2, just more limited.

In Campaign 1, Stephanie Brown went by the name of Spoiler. As the daughter of Cluemaster, a villain who was positioning himself as a person of influence in No Mans Land. Spoiler was dedicated to revealing who he truly was and making sure that after everything he did to her and her mother that he wouldnt become the reformed hero he was trying to become. Fastbreak and Artemis both grew very close to Cluemaster and Cluemaster was trying hard to woo Varra to his side for her connections. Cluemaster did not bring together No Mans Land - that job was left to Commissioner Gordon and the GCPD, but Cluemaster still played a major role and after the campaign went on to become a senator due to the work he did in No Mans Land.

Stephanie in-between campaigns died fighting Black Mask. We learned this fact in the Epilogue video scar made to conclude Campaign 1 and I think I speak for all of us when we were shocked and depressed to learn of this event. Scar assured us that he had to remain accurate to the comics and as disappointed as we all were, we accepted it.

We ended up going to Bristol Township fairly early in the campaign to investigate where the children of Gotham City were being taken to a reeducation camp. We snuck onto the campus and split up, investigating various buildings and leads when Data 7 got attacked by an equated. Data beat him up, but the equated man went to blow himself up to take Data out with him - when he was rescued by Spoiler?! No, not Spoiler. Stephanie Brown, alive and well, is now going by the name Batgirl. Our group gathered together again and she led us to her secret base on the school and explained to us what happened.

She never died. Black Mask nearly killed her and she ended up in the care of Leslie Thompkins. Dr. Thompkins is very against Batmans crusade including children and getting them killed, and she convinced Stephanie Brown to move out of Gotham under a new name and allow the Batfamily to think she died. She attended this school in Bristol under the name of Sally and is well aware of all the happenings. She fills us in on everyone she knows about and we make plans to come back again to free as many kids as we can. When we come back, we separate into separate groups, Batgirl going by herself, with the plan to create as much chaos as we can by getting the students to fight back. We meet a lot of the students, take out a lot of the leadership, but when it comes to it were limited to how many people are able to get out. Theres an underground railroad of sorts in a nearby city that we heard of, but we couldnt in good conscience send a large group there. Batgirl says that shell stay back, continue to protect the kids, and when we know of the safe route they can take, well come back.

So, like, why does this Batgirl rank so high? Because like, shes totally a ten and the rest of us? Were, like, twos at best. Maybe threes since we helped her, like, if were desperate enough to think we need to be threes. But were, like, still really twos.

Shes young and cocky and dismissive of other peoples assistance. Oracle confided in us that Spoiler really did respect our PCs in Campaign 1, but Spoiler would have never told us this herself. And thats part of her charm.

Hint for #15: If I had to pick this characters strongest qualities, I would be very confident in saying loyalty & faithfulness.

#15 - Captain Cold (Leonard Snart)

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/9/0/5/AAcguBAADnbB.png

I googled the opposite of betrayal and got loyalty & trustworthiness. I was very confident Snart would never have betrayed us and was uh very wrong.

In Campaign 1, after the Suicide Squad came to town, they remained in town a bit aimlessly without much to do. Snart was positioned by our group to become a lieutenant for Penguin and take over the territory formerly held by Mr. Freeze. He didnt have to do much and was treated well - Varra brought him a pool table and the party would occasionally stop by to play pool with Snart. Varra and Snart had a connection between the two of them, but Varra was already with Vertigo at this point and it never progressed beyond flirtation.

Snart did turn on the party once when Geo-Force was brought in to help them. Snart froze Geo-Force and demanded that the party allow him access to Freezes suit and gun, keeping Freeze in a containment unit so he didnt have a say in it. He got what he wanted and even though he betrayed the party in this act, Varra continued to have faith in Snart. Eventually, a plan to assassinate various leaders of Gotham was occurring and Snart got named as a suspect to be behind it. Varra scoffed at this - Snart may have betrayed us once, but it was for a reason. What was his reason for this? Snart wasnt someone who wanted to be in power - he wanted to do as little as possible while still getting what he wanted. Well, I was wrong. Snart was behind this and had to get stopped by our group.

But I still stand by that loyalty and faithfulness are two qualities of Snarts. To the Rogues. Our mistake in Campaign 1 was not being members of the Rogues. In Campaign 2, Snart is in full command of a group of Rogues, including Heatwave, Mirror Master, Trickster and Weather Wizard. They are not with the Society - Lex Luthor gave them intel on how to kill The Flash, leading them to believe they were going to be striking against Wally West. But they ended up killing a kid - Bart Allen. Rogues have a strict no killing kids rule and Luthor tricked them into breaking this rule. So they are against Luthor and the Society and want their own revenge.

The Rogues are now tentative allies of ours. They all have something they want in return from us, ranging from rescuing their child to an olympic swimming pool full of cocaine - but when it has come down to it, theyve helped us, including when the Furies of Central City, including Wonder Woman, were trying to kill us. They helped us escape and are the only reason were still alive. The best moment with them this campaign however came from when Radio Tuner came with us to a meeting with them and made each of them break into a rendition of Ill Make A Rogue Out Of You, a tune set to the Mulan song of a similar name. Snart was extremely offended at what he was made to do, but this was an A+ moment that was as bizarre and as wonderful as it sounds typing it out.

Keystone / Central City have been great. Theres a three way war for control of the city right now - Im not sure who well end up allying with and the fact that we arent instantly going with the Rogues is a sign of how great the others are there too. No matter how the story goes, Im excited to see things play out.

Hint for #14: This characters powers deal with at least one of the four elements.

#14 - Weeping Woman / La Llorona (Maria Salvaje)

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/2/3/6/AAcguBAADngM.png

In some of my previous entries, when I mentioned El Paso, I talked about how characters were trying to cross the wall into Juarez. I failed to mention why it was so hard to get into Juarez. La Dama, a local crime lord in El Paso, told us about the Weeping Woman who protected the Weeping Wall and that even she was unable to get into Juarez. La Dama was distracted by other issues within the city and was unable to dedicate her forces to the wall to break through. She wanted us to help, but when we finally made our way to Juarez and met the Weeping Woman, my mind was made up on who to back in this war.

La Llorona has blood red tears running down her cheeks and the first time we met her, she talked about how she can hear the screams of children. She was once a human named Maria Salvaje, an activist in El Paso. She saw how the city was corrupt and spoke out against La Dama and the corrupt police who were on her payroll. La Dama used her resources to turn the city against Maria Salvaje, even framing her as an incompetent mother and getting one of her children taken away from her. Shortly after this, there was a fire in Maria Salvajes house. She survived, but her other child died. In response, she went to Juarez and found La Damas daughter and killed her. She was beat after this and left in the waters of the Rio Grande to die, when the waters merged with her and turned her into this.

La Llorona is far from innocent. She killed a child in revenge, in a war against La Dama. La Dama claimed to us that she never intended to kill La Lloronas child in that fire - but regardless, La Dama killed a child and also took the other child, Milagro, away from Maria. Both women had sins in their past, but to Brennus, and to myself, La Llorona was more innocent. Add on the fact that La Dama was kidnapping and experimenting on magicians in an attempt to drain their powers for herself, Brennus was fully on La Lloronas side. Unfortunately, the other PCs werent as quick to agree - they told La Dama the majority of what was happening and what they learned and tried to make a deal to free Traci, the magician that she captured, as opposed to taking Traci back by force.

Brennus did not relent however. Through some investigation work in the El Paso police department, we discovered that Milagro was still alive and was adopted by a local family in El Paso - the Reyes, the man that we met at the auto mechanic earlier. We met with the family. Milagro was young and unaware of what was happening, but was loved and cared for by the family. A plan began to formulate, but the other PCs were making a contingency plan. Lush, connected to nature magic, got an acorn that would work as a prison for La Llorona and gave it to Pepper, La Damas biggest supporter in our group. Brennus explains to La Llorona that MIlagro is alive and that this war needs to end - that La Llorona could use her powers instead to protect her daughter and the people of El Paso and Juarez and while it seems to get through to her, its not enough. The group decides that Milagro needs to be brought to La Llorona to fully get through to her. Brennus is reluctant, not wanting to risk the life of a loved child, but agrees that its worth the risk.

When we get to Milagros, La Dama is already there, knowing what we had discovered and what we were planning. She wants to come with us, to bring Milagro to La Llorona and barter for a treaty between the two of them. Brennus is suspicious, but La Dama has her army with her. We wouldnt be able to take Milagro without her agreeing. When the groups come together, La Llorona cannot resist reacting when Milagro calls her mama. She hugs the girl tight, but it is interrupted when a beeping starts coming from a bracelet Milagro wears. A bomb, La Dama explained, that is keyed to her. As long as she lives, Milagro lives. An insurance policy to make sure that La Llorona wont kill her. The two of them stare each other down and La Llorona stays her hand for now. Instead, she asks Brennus to pledge himself to her. When this is all over, when La Dama and La Llorona no longer need to be linked, Brennus will help her kill La Dama. Brennus agrees, without hesitation.

El Paso and Juarez were about to fall, and La Dama, La Llarona, their lieutenants and the civilians of both towns begin a long trek, a Convoy, to the tip of South America so that they can be ferried to Zonn Zorr. La Dama and La Llorona are in charge of the Convoy and seem to never agree on the safest way to get there, but eventually, with the help of our party, they make it.

After arriving in Zonn Zorr, La Llorona is depressed. She had a purpose, to kill La Dama and get revenge for her family. She lost that to replace it with a new purpose, to safely get the people of Juarez and El Paso to Zonn Zorr. With that complete, she didnt know what purpose she held. Brennus tried to convince her that there was still more to do, more to protect. Milagro was now a civilian in Zonn Zorr, but La Llorona didnt feel like she was needed. Until Kobra attacked. When Kobra and his forces were attacking the town of Castling, where the Convoy residents had set up, La Llorona fought back, saving many lives and slowing down Kobras plans. Afterwards, she agreed that Zonn Zorr needed more protection and she found her purpose again.

She had a very recent moment again, when the party went to a feast in their honor in Bahdnisia. The Spectre attacked, using the mountain walls surrounding the country as a bowl and filling it with wine, cackling as the party and the people of Bahdnisia were doomed to slowly drown. The party struggled, finding as many ways as they could to slow to progression until their teleporters could come and rescue them and the survivors of Bahdnisia. La Llorona was one of their ways to stall - use her control of water to absorb and slow down the assault. She does so, although it drains her and Brennus has to carry her to safety. Hes been pledged to her and he attends to see his pledge through, no matter how La Dama justifies what shes done or positions herself to attain more power. To him, La Damas time is limited. Hell see to it, and hell see that La Llorona gets her vengeance.

#12 - Inertia (Thaddeus Thawne II)

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/6/9/2/AAcguBAADnnU.png

I mentioned before when the party fought the Furies in Central City - led by Wonder Woman. The other furies were Catwoman, Batwoman and Giganta. During the battle, Giganta picked up Brennus and chucks him up in the air. He started coming down two miles away from where the battle occurred. Brennus used a spell he has to summon a rope, grabbing on to a balcony of the first building he began to pass. He pulled himself up to the balcony and found himself at STAR Labs back in Keystone. Unfortunately, STAR Labs is where Zoom, the Society leader of Keystone, has set up experiments of his own. Brennus is quickly captured and thanks to Zooms wife begins an escape attempt.

On the way out, he sees Inertia threatening a doctor. Inertia is complaining about how he cant even reach Mach 6 and that he needs to be faster - Zoom wont take him seriously unless hes faster. Inertia says hes made from Bart Allens DNA and should be just as fast as Bart. He also says that hes the one who tricked the Rogues into killing Bart. When the doctor says that doesnt make him as strong as Bart, he threatens to kill her, causing Brennus to jump out of the vents he was in and get in an 1-on-1 fight with a Speedster to try to save this doctor.

The fight seems fairly even until Brennus plays dirty, kicking Inertia in the nuts and causing him to fall over. He grabs the doctors hand, believing this is their chance to escape, but Inertia calls Zoom, who quickly grabs Brennus and takes him across the city. Zoom and Brennus talk and Zoom agrees to not kill Brennus if he trains Inertia. Zoom wants to rescue Wally West from the timestream and he needs Inertia to be faster so that Inertia can enter the speedforce and rescue Wally. And he wants Brennus to help Inertia get faster. Brennus isnt sure how he can help a speedster get faster and Zoom tells him that Inertia being defeated, being humiliated, will give him the motivation to get faster.

When the party reunites and goes to train him, Inertia is clearly still holding a grudge. Before they find him, Inertia starts using his speed to attack the party. Eventually he stops to talk to the party - he has no interest in this training, but will do what Zoom tells him to. The group spars and Inertia's attitude is apparent in this battle. His attacks are wild, uncoordinated and desperate. When his plans go awry he struggles to recover. When the party beats him, he gets angry. Brennus tries to talk him up, complements him on how much better he's gotten and how much better he can still get. Inertia seems reluctant to agree, but Brennus tells Inertia thst he'll get stronger too, and that he looks forward to their next duel. Inertia speeds off, clearly considering Brennus an enemy still.

It's been a full year since we've last had a mission in this city but it still sticks with me. Inertia was responsible for getting the Rogues to kill Bart. The Rogues want revenge and we've been making allies on both sides. Unlike La Dama and La Llorona, I'm not sure if there's a solution for both sides here, and that's not even touching on the Central City leader, Grimm, who I also quite like. Things will eventually come to a head as long as we eventually return.

Hint for #11: This character's costume features green.

Man, I would never have guessed that Inertia made this list either! That's crazy.

I really don't know who to guess for this one at all. Maybe Hal? I'm totally thrown at this point!

I'm not complaining or anything - it's really interesting! These ranking topics give me motivation to keep working hard to engage you and your PCs. It's really what I need, especially in weeks like these where real life have me feeling so beaten down.

#11 - Ragman (Rory Regan)

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/8/7/5/AAcguBAADnqL.png

This should be the last character on my rankings who is inflated more based off of Campaign 1!

In Campaign 1, Ragman was an ally of Varra's - perhaps reluctantly. Whenever she would ask him for help, it tended to go poorly for Ragman. He would get captured, get tortured and get rescued. It wasn't always on Varra - Ragman had a connection with a woman in the city and went undercover himself to try to keep her safe, against our wishes. It all worked out, eventually, but bad things happening to Ragman was a trend.

So much to the point that when Brennus met Ragman in Campaign 2 and learned who his mother was, he made it a point to request that Brennus not ask him for help. Brennus has agreed and has kept his distance from Ragman, for the most part this campaign. The two of them have had a few discussions, but Ragman has had more of a presence in Saoirse's story, as her current magical teacher.

Ragman had a bit of a personality shift between campaigns. In Camapgin 1, he saw his suit and the souls looking for redemption trapped within it as an opportunity. He seemed eager to be a hero, demonstrated by how quickly he jumped into action, both on his own and at Varra's request. I'm not sure if it was the events of Campaign 1, an event inbetween Campaigns or just the general passage of time, but Ragman sees things through a different lens these days. He's a little more down on the suit and his legacy - seeing it as more of an obligation. He's not sure what happens to the souls after their patches get destroyed. Do they find redemption and peace, torture and suffering or just nothingness? It's literally given him indigestion - he is frequently seen with a bottle of tums fighting back burps. Brennus saw his meeting of Ragman as an example of 'never meet your heroes'. Varra spent the time inbetween campaigns talking about Ragman, but the man Brennus met is not that man.

There are still glimmers of the hero there. He's a wonderful teacher for Saoirse, proud of her and her accomplishments. Saoirse might be brightening Rory's worldview, slowly but surely. I'm not sure what potential there is for Ragman in this campaign, he's another magical hero stuck in Oblivion while the Spectre roams the world, hunting down magical heroes. But I hope he finds a way to stretch he's legs and get out of the bar. That he finds a way to be the hero he can be once again.

Maybe he'll have to leave the bar when we find Varra and bring her back to Z'onn Z'orr. He'll have to find a new place to hide before she starts asking him for help again...
