Even ignoring the talent behind this game inspiring full confidence, after the absolute disaster that was the 15 plot I'd take even a paint by numbers fantasy story.

It's looking like a good paint by numbers fantasy story and the battle system looks like it'll be fun so I'm more than satisfied.

Looks pretty decent tbh. Not worth buying a PS5 for but defo worth keeping an eye on. Also pretty sure the voice actor at 35 seconds is the voice over guy on some UK tv channels.

It still feels like "Witcher 3 at home" to me. Not really getting the hype.

Man, XV was almost great. The Wikipedia of the plot is awesome.

The problem of course being you need to watch a full length movie outside of the game and not miss random optional dialogue to understand it.

All time bad plot is still XII

12's was OK until it just gave up and stopped having one. And not, like, figuratively, once you leave that mountain the game stops having any noteable cutscenes or story progression for like 5 zones, and it never REALLY comes back even for the ending?

Even when it has a plot XII was terrible. I tried playing the game 3 times and gave up 10 hours in every time because I did not care one bit about any character in the entire game.

To be fair I did the exact same thing. Wasn't until the 4th time that I actually trudged through it lol.

I wasn't sold by the first trailer, but hot damn. This is some dark and gritty shit. I need more of it. Just have to hope the gameplay doesn't let me down.

Confused by this because it's much more Game of Thrones than Witcher. Dramatic royal palace politics are front and center here when that's part of the background in Witcher. It's Game of Thrones but the house leaders turn into kaiju. Also, Witcher's combat is very clunky and this is some flashy Devil May Cry shit. It's ok to not be enthused by that of course.

Do we even have any indication if it's open world yet? For all we know it's FF7R combat hallways with occasional diversions.

XII has a terribly slow first act, yes. It does pick up a bit after that but I would never say it gets good (and there's like two and a half good characters in the whole game). XV is a huge unfinished mess even in its current state, but there's bits and pieces of a potentially interesting story buried in there, especially the DLCs.

Yoshi P's only quote on the subject

Yoshida has confirmed the game will not be open world as it takes place on a global scale and they didn't want the size of the world to feel shrunken down as a result of being able to walk anywhere.

They would do well to stay away from "open world" from now on. FFXV devolved into, "Oh, here's another batch of 5-10 enemies to fight that are higher level than me." It was a fetch quest disguised as letting you do whatever you wanted. The only good part about that was riding the car and listening to FF music. XV suffers mightly from not explaining anything, or going long stretches without doing so. When the game forces you down the final 3rd, you at least finally get some shreds of motivation and intrigue. I just think "open world" only works in something like Yakuza, when it is such a condensed map with 50 million things to do. XV tried to be "expansive," but ended up boring.

I'll take FF7R's approach. It had some sidequests, but kept the focus on the characters and their story.

There are parts I like and parts I don't like.

Like:
-"x-men in a fantasy setting" drama
-the blight

Dislike:
-crystal worship... again
-characters are serious, boring, and interchangeable
-generic fantasy countries
-summoning and generally being dependent upon deities is lame

hopefully all of this generic setup is here to immediately be knocked down by the events of the game, the characters are interesting, etc etc

Same! Game gets a bad wrap. Open worlds games never do anything for me at all, if I enjoy them it's in spite of it.

What an odd attempt at a dig

There were plenty of bad in hindsight takes around Demons Souls era and before Dark Souls really blew up. Hell, there were people worried that GRRM's influence on Elden Ring would make the fantasy setting too basic, instead they made their weirdest and deepest world yet.

Unless you meant turn based party combat, in which case yes, that is asking too much. Not gonna get a big budget one of those again. Even Dragon Quest is supposedly tossing it next time.
