This has been my favorite modern SW with Mando in close 2nd, maybe its because I've recently read a couple books about the show's premise.

Oh my doge THIS IS SO GOOD!!!

Turns out you don't have to actually show torture physically happening if you just describe what the torture is in sickening detail and you'll have the same narrative effect.

Perrin thinking Vel needs to "find a husband". What an absolute pile of a man.

And just the venom in Serkis' voice of "Never more than twelve."

It's hard to do "tell, don't show" well, but they nailed it here.

Can't stop thinking about the torture scene. There are so many levels to it.

  1. The less is more "describe the torture" to make one afraid of it rather than just showing physical elements (the needle in ANH, the sparking and sharp machinery in ESB).
  2. The referential element to other torture scenes in Star Wars. At the end of the scene, the camera is outside the cell, the cell door closes, and an Imperial marches away, with the camera focused on his boots, just like in A New Hope in Leia's torture scene.
  3. "The Empire is actually fucking horrible" element of them getting this torture device as a byproduct of the extermination of an indigenous species.
  4. The "Star Wars is cool aliens" element of an actual species with a death cry that can cause measurable torture to a human that hears it.
  5. The combination of 3 and 4 with the fact that probably the only lore we'll ever know about this species is what we've learned in this episode, and the fact that they're completely exterminated now.

I think Disney is starting to get more confident in Andor, and this is how I know:

That scene was so fucking good. So god damn sinister and no Force Powers to speak of.

The thing I love about this show specifically is just how damn sinister and oppressive the empire feels. Usually their depiction is one or two scary guys at the top and a bunch of dweebs underneath them. This really channels stuff that was implied all the way back in the original movie and not overly expanded on since then.

The Empire here is a den of snakes constantly spreading their reach as they see fit. They feel dangerous. But additionally they also are people ready to stab their own colleagues in the back to gain more power. You can see how there are people like Tarkin all throughout their ranks out there.

The middle management of the Empire is perhaps more terrifying than anything else shown of them so far. These are the people the regular joes have to deal with while the Emperor and Vader are dealing with Jedi and their friends.

Syril being a complete simp is maybe one of the most (purposefully) uncomfortable scenes in Star Wars. God damn.

I love that the Empire has the guy they're tearing apart the galaxy looking for the entire time too. Literally the answer to their problem here is to actually keep track of what they're doing but they're just too bloated, complacent and arrogant to even consider it.

Also god damn being Mon Mothma is stressful.

technically, they're tearing the galaxy apart for Luthen. they're only interested in Andor because there's a known direct link between them.

I wonder what direction they are planning to go with the character? Right now it doesn't seem to be much more than "ex-cop seeking revenge with no way to get it".

I think he's one of those angry, bitter guys who feel like they're entitled to be something great and act they're destined to be important even if they don't deserve it. Someone who overall has decent opportunities to be someone productive but just can't help lashing out and being angry anyway.

Which makes them the ultimate kind of people that get used and disposed of by fascists. I think that's going to be his destiny. Really the show is all about how people live within fascism. He's the one who directly sticks his hand up to be used by it.

Yeah my prediction is that by the end of Season 2, Syril will sacrifice himself in order to capture/kill Cassian:
  • For the Empire
  • For Dedra's approval
  • Because he's obsessed with Cassian
  • To finally get away from his mother

Sci-fi drama I guess. You could strip the Star Wars elements out but is very much tied to a dystopian sci-fi setting.

Im waiting for a direction for that plot

it feels so useless at this point and disconnected from the rest of the story (even though it technically ties in)

its fun watching him get humiliated each week but it also feels like a waste of screen time

same, its redundant if he just has the same goal as the main bad guys.

either he becomes a rebel or is instrumental in saving Andor in some way

otherwise just feels like a waste of space to keep following this character

I'm kind of hoping Casian doesn't make it out of the prison tbh. I've been enjoying the bigger focus on Coruscant politics and the Empire's inner workings a hell of a lot more than the "yet another rogue turned rebel" plot it started out as.

Im still amazed at how the show was able to turn itself around. Those first five episodes were an absolute slog to get through. And thats a lot, coming from me, because I love slow-paced character-driven stuff but that only works when the characters are compelling and how it fits into the overall story. They did not need five episodes to tell that part of the story lmao.

But ever since they pulled off the heist, the show has actually been pretty good. Been loving the prison stuff, and the Mon Mothma stuff has been the highlight from the beginning.

Still my least favorite Star Wars show, but its watchable now.
