So they ran out of Survivor challenges to reuse, so now they're reusing TAR challenges.

I missed the "dizzy obstacles" challenges. Those are always fun. Certainly better than another "hold the thing" borefest.

Also, I think now that Ryan's out, Cassidy's story has nowhere left to go. She's probably gone soon. Also happy to see Noelle recognizes what Sami is doing and is seeing reason to get rid of him.

(I am pretty behind jsyk)

Noelle's come-from-behind challenge win was epic, though completely expected based on the editing. They focused on her far too much for someone who was (understandably) at the back of the pack, but she yet again proved what a fucking BADASS she is. She's obviously my favorite. And that seemed to be more excessive than a challenge focus usually gets - but it's probably like Christian in DvG, to make her the fan favorite she absolutely should be.

That vote split could be the perfect smokescreen to blindside Sami or Cody. Both would be good targets for numerous players. Noelle is not the right person to target right now - take her out a bit later, since she doesn't have the same options that some of the guys do.

You say this about a lot of challenge results but more often than not the edit shows someone making a comeback and not pulling it off, or desperately needing immunity and just barely losing it, etc.

I think you're way off on both.

Survivor: Jesse is now my top pick, with Cody as a strong second. Karla and Sami are a very distant third and fourth, and the others are out of contention as far as I'm concerned but if I HAVE to rank them I say Cassidy 5th, Gabler 6th, Owen 7th.

Amazing Race: I think Derek/Claire, Luis/Michelle, and Aubrey/David will be the Final 3, with the winner being one of the first two. Gun-to-my-head I say Luis/Michelle win.

Yeah, that really sucks. I'm currently rooting for... nobody!

Here are my current winner possibilities:
  1. Jesse - This episode gave him an emotional connection, a cool confessional, and yet another good move shared with Cody.
  2. Karla - Always gets told what's going on. She's the true center of everything and has been since the start, so if the winner is Coco, it would have to be her. She was the only person on that tribe with any semblance of a story early on.
  3. Cody - One of the few characters established early that has had a storyline, though that's kinda fallen by the wayside.
  4. Owen - He's been the butt of editors' jokes but that may be because he actually does well, and they want to embarrass him somehow.
  5. Sami - He's clearly getting set up for a downfall at this point. He's not very likable.
  6. Gabler - Outside chaotic shot at best, but I'm getting runner-up vibes from him.
  7. Cassidy - I don't think the winner was on Coco, I really don't, and if it were, it wouldn't be Cassidy, who I kept forgetting existed for half the pre-merge. Unlike with someone like Erika, who was introduced right from the getgo, she was background character - and unlike Erika, she went to Tribal pre-merge. There was no connection to her until last week, and her only relevant relationship was with Ryan. Her story never existed - there's no "wolf in sheep's clothing" to her. She's not "come alive." She's just kinda there.

Jesse is probably the Shan/Omar of the season, where whoever takes him out is the winner. And somehow Gabler looks to be the most likely person to do that. It's possible that Jesse just steamrolls this to the end, but he's started to get a little cocky which means he's probably due for a downfall.

As for the twins, I think the edit is overplaying the injury a bit as part of their winning story. I've been thinking for a while now that either the injury takes them out or they win, and we're running out of time for the former.

S43: Gabler is waiting in the weeds and has been portrayed as such. But maybe the editors know that we'd think "GABLER WINNER" if he's the one credited with taking down Jesse, and Karla actually wins because she then takes Gabler out. Entirely possible. Cassidy's easily in last for me, as she's had virtually nothing. But after that it was pretty hard to rank them.

TAR: Emily did that roadblock despite it, so I can buy that they're overplaying it. Would be an Amy/Maya type upset, that's for sure.

So does Sami have a prepared excuse for why he can't drink?

I was thinking about this before, maybe we even posted about it in this (or a prior) topic, and then I realized... they're in Fiji? google says their drinking age is 18?

I don't remember if Survivor enforced a 21-and-up drinking age in a previous season or not but yeah, maybe it didn't need to be addressed... or just steer clear of drinking alcohol entirely, bad idea considering the state of your body and mind at that point anyways.

Survivor requires you to follow both local AND US law, so contestants under 21 can't drink. I remember in Redemption Island there was a reward with booze and Jeff said "Alcoholic AND non-alcoholic, Natalie, drinks." And during a challenge in MvGX where there was an alcohol reward, Jeff was just kind of shooting the shit during a slow moment and said, "Will, you know you can't drink, right?"

Also Sami could easily just say he doesn't drink. He shouldn't have to explain why he doesn't. There's actually quite the movement going on on social media right now where we should just accept that some people don't drink and they shouldn't have to have a reason not to, and I agree.

The fact that this lasted nearly three hours to the point that they had to call it is pretty freaking remarkable.

Cody's safe. Jesse's probably gonna play an idol on himself. Sami might play the Shit in the Dark (they might've reminded us to say that it was ending, though). It's either Sami or Cassidy going. They voted him out anyway, because he WAS a threat at fire, and the guy can talk, so he'd be an FTC threat too.

But glad Cody still recognized that brute strength does not a challenge threat make.

Also part of me wanted him to roll that 6 so Survivor could've gotten what they wanted out of Shit in the Dark and ditched it going forward.

If Aubrey & David win I truly will not understand their edit unless they were, in actuality, so overwhelmingly negative and unpleasant that the only way to make the audience not absolutely detest them was to give them such a bland edit. I find that hard to believe though.

I'd say more likely safety was the issue. Unlike Tom/Ian or even Christian/Alec, this wasn't endurance at that point. Owen and Karla were just chilling in the water under the grate and because of the tide it would be many, many hours before it was a challenge again. By that time, hypothermia would be a very real concern. They would probably have to pull Owen and Karla out of the water until the tide came back in. At that point, it's like starting the challenge from scratch with just the two of them, and who's to say they don't just keep getting the same result until one of them fucks up? And what do you do with the contestants in the meantime? I think they made the only call.

Casting on Survivor has given us a collection of interchangeable gamebots who all seem to be playing for interchangeable Cody/Jesse to succeed.

And Amazing Race has just been stiflingly boring with almost zero conflict, and awful leg designs.

Survivor has gotten better the last three episodes, but that doesn't change how boring the first eight weeks were. I find myself not rooting for anybody because I can't differentiate them. Noelle was my favorite because she was one of the few with personality, and she had a killer story and played a good game, too. But, like you said about TAR, there hasn't been much conflict. I can't think of any other than the Owen vs. James slowdown. They should cast more volatile people (like Phillip, Abi, or Drew Christy types) so the gamebots go haywire. I always enjoy that, since it gives those players better content. It also makes for potential bitter jurors, which make for a better show.

What little I've seen of Amazing Race has been dull and formulaic. They don't cast pairs with budding drama any longer, and the lack of airports makes it hard for teams to find reason to hate each other. People are too nice to each other and that makes the show less interesting. There's a reason I don't waste my time with it anymore.

I didn't really feel like Noelle had any more personality than the rest of them. This season, it felt like they're using interesting backstories to make you root for these people instead of their personalities, and Noelle's backstory was the one with the most screentime.

I actually think this season's leg design is much better than last season's, where most of the legs were so linear that when Kim & Penn won leg 6 it meant that they would've won out if the rock challenge wasn't a thing just from lack of opportunities to pass other teams.

I'm not even sure if Aubrey & David really had inter-team conflict or if that was just a one time thing. Plus we had Linton & Sharik and Rich & Dom, but they were out early (and Rich & Dom were never going to make it that far anyway).

The problem is that there were only three strong teams post-COVID and only two of those were competent.

This season has had a lot of strong and competent teams.
