The problem with golden routes is they turn the entire idea of choosing what to do into a waste of time since your options are just A) Be a moronic asshole, B) Be a stupid piece of shit, or C) Pick the obviously objectively correct option because you're not an imbecile who even considers A and B, right?

There are plenty of ways they could have done a Golden Route that aren't 'give you the choice from the beginning where you'd have to be a moron to not pick it' like Fates did. Requiring you to complete at least one route beforehand, for instance. VNs have done route splits with true/golden endings for literal decades before Fates and 3H and pulled them off well.

3H in particular literally already has time powers in it. There are absolutely ways to write it so that there are still stakes as well.

Frankly I kind of think 3H needed something like this anyway, even beyond my own taste, because I do actually think it has a big writing problem in that because of how they did the routes, none of them really are very satisfying endings.

Yeah not having a golden route is one of the fun things about Three Houses. It's not necessary in all games with multiple routes! Three Hopes doesn't have one either and I'm also fine with that.

The main issue is that they don't address everything in each route so you have entire plotlines just dropped or dealt with off screen. It's not even really a case of 'well just play the other routes if you want to see those then' because those routes also have the same problem, where even if its addressed in one you've already played you're simply left asking "Yeah, but what about that thing that was a major plot point in the other route? Where did it go??". Golden Deer is especially awful about this.

It's not written in a way that allows it to form a cohesive narrative. The routes don't really get across a consistent theme or plot- there's no actual structure to the entirety of the story. Adding in a true ending fundamentally fixes that problem as long as the writing quality itself is fine (which I think it is, 3H's problems are structural problems, not moment-to-moment writing generally, which the same can't be said in Fates). It would let you get all of that focus on each individual element of the routes, but still brings them back in a way that ties all of it together.

EDIT: And no, Revelations ending sucked, but as said Fates had the additional problem of the writing just being bad. It's not the 'golden route' itself that caused the ending to be bad.

Xander can become a murder machine too, you just have to know the right things to do. Mainly make Charlotte his full-time backpack and give him a speed tonic every map. When he starts doubling, nothing stands in his way.

I think he's just getting speed cursed.

It's actually INCREDIBLY rare that most of my units can double. I just chalked it up to Hoshidan enemies being faster than Nohr enemies on average.

Conquest has decent enemy quality so you won't be doubling as much as Birthright just due to that. I'm not sure if the Hoshidan classes themselves are also faster but it wouldn't surprise me.

Also to be fair half of what makes Xander good is just his sword

The end of Conquest is such a trip, it's great.

I managed to defeat him after suffering only one wave attack!

I was fully expecting to have to fight the backup Takumi too, but it just ended.

This map is the biggest nightmare ever on Lunatic if you didn't prepare for it by saving some Rescue uses (and some other staff shenanigans too preferably), playing through it without staffs to prevent/bypass stuff is possible but one of the hardest things in the entire series

Final boss Takumi is great. I just wish that you didnt have to fight Garon again after dying.

In the Takumi chapter, you missed another very memorable generic enemy unit. Rallyman, a Master of Arms with all 4 main rally skills. Hes actually very useful because you can capture him and put him on your team.

Rallyman, Pass Falconknights in Hinoka's chapter, the chapter 9 boss, random shrine maidens to fill in as staff bots in chapter 12 if you reclassed Jakob...Conquest has all kinds of fun people to kidnap and brainwash into conquering their homeland

Obviously I can't Imagine I'll have all the royals anytime soon, so will be interesting to see who I use to fill in along the way. At least I'll have Kana and Shigure pretty early.

So to be clear.

In both Birthright and Conquest, you can fight for the opposing army for like half the game, and the enemy leader will still say they haven't given up on taking you home and being a family again.

Here, you bop one random goon from each army and say you don't want to fight, and both Xander and Ryoma standing next to eachother declare you an irredeemable enemy combatant, and must be hunted down.

You know what is sad but also funny about the Fates writing? Before it came out they were pretty heavily advertising that they got a professional novelist to write the story.

Apparently the person they got to write it more just gave them a huge outline of his ideas for the story and it got trimmed down to whatever the hell we ended up with. Which probably explains why Fates sounds like a pretty cool story up until the moment you hear any of the details or read any of the script.
